How do Golden Buzzer acts do at the end?

I haven't watched the show for long so don't know how many seasons the had the golden buzzers. But for example, last year, was the winner a golden buzzer recipient? My apologies for my crap memory.

And in your opinion, are the golden buzzers being utilized correctly (for lack of a better word)? I've read opinions on here where they should be used for acts that are unlikely to make it to the semi-final stage on their own.

2015 golden buzzers did not do so well, none of them top 3 in the final, some of them not getting past the semi final stage.

Cowell - Calum Scott - Won semi-final 5

Ant n Dec - Boyband - Judges vote semi 4

Holden - Revelation Avenue - Lost judges vote, eliminated semi 2

Dixon - Entity Allstars - Won judges vote semi 1

Walliams - Lorraine Bowen - Eliminated Semi 1, didn't get to judges vote even

The winning dancing dog(s) were not a golden buzzer

The year before Bars & Melody got to third place, so they will be the most successful golden buzz so far.

Sounds like quite a mixed bag then. What is the point in it all? Just a gimmick to get the audience in a frenzy?
