CS- Any Word On Eileen Derbyshire/Emily Returning
Shane Parrish

Still no word. Isn't the six months up yet. Shouldn't she be back in June/July time.

I haven't really missed her tbh.

I think she's gone for good. Eileen Derbyshire's way of retiring without a big fuss being made of her. If she really only wanted 6 months off Emily could have simply not appeared onscreen for 6 months, she barely features anyway I doubt anyone would even have noticed. To actually go to the effort of writing her out and giving her an onscreen exit to me implies she's not coming back. I expect Rita or Norris to receive a phone call at some point from her revealing she's decided to remain in Peru permanently rather than return to Weatherfield.

I love the character of Emily and would love to see her back but sadly I think you're right.
Would be a sad end to a great character.

She is a legend. Eileen Derbyshire needs a proper send off.

She probably doesn't want a fuss and i really don't care about Emily, she isn't no Blanche or Dot cotton.

She is extremely private and perhaps she doesn't want one - if this is the case her wishes have to be respected.

It wouldn't really matter as the writers can still give her a send off without the need for the actress.

Not that there is anything at the moment confirming she is leaving. She is meant to be back in July.

The actress might be incredibly private, but I believe after so long with the show she would have enough respect for the character, the show and it's fans to have an onscreen fair well. Coronation Street has had a number of older cast members leave in such a low key way - Jack and Vera for example - yet on the flip side they've done things like Alma Baldwin's death incredibly well too.

Considering she is hardly ever on screen, I do hope the actress is taking time off just for the sake of taking time off.

Too be honest I don't won't Emily to come back, she is pointless, and she barley appears, and has no impact at all in the show, if there is anyone on the show which serves no purpose or adds very little to nothing, it's Emily. Sean adds more than her to the show!

Are you crazy?

Emily has been on Corrie for 60 years! Yes, she is a quiet background character nowadays, but Emily is one of the most moral, dignified and upstanding characters in British soap.

Not everyone can be a Vera Duckworth or Bet lynch. You need your quiet, stable and ordinary characters to keep a sense of sanity.

Plus Emily has had her fair share of storylines. Who can forget her spending a night up a tree, or being whalloped over the head with a crowbar, in the neighbours sitting room?

I'll be really disappointed if she doesn't come back but that send off was quite a big one for a character just going for a break!!

As for what she brings to the show, she has been a complex & at times brilliantly acted character for over 50 years now so the least she brings is history & continuity!!

Just my personal opinion but to me she still adds something to every little scene she appears in though big storylines are obviously unlikely now given her age!!

Not every character needs to have major story lines. Emily is a background character. If she left who would be constantly available for babysitting the young of Coronation Street?

So I guess it shouldn't bother you at all if she does return.

Is that Emily the character due back on screen or Eileen the actor due back on set?

I hope that, even if Emily has retired, she will be coaxed back for special occasions - weddings, funerals etc.

Soaps film the Christmas/New Year eps a bit earlier than usual. She should've been back on set a while now and should definitely be on-screen before July.

There's no point in her returning, the character is pointless. She should just retire if she hasn't already.

This, like Betty Driver was in her final years.

However I honestly wouldn't be shocked to learn that Emily had fallen in love with and married a 25 year old Inca man and decided to settle in Peru forever more.
