iPhone 6 plus damaged

Dropped iPhone 6 plus on tiled floor, even with screen protector on the floor got a bit of the edge of the screen which has went completely black in the top right corner (0.5cm diameter) and the rest of the screen is showing a sort of wash out colour with vertical banding of thin white strips down the screen.

Phone is otherwise operable.

Phone bought from CarPhone Warehouse in September 2015 and is on EE tariff. I don't think it currently has insurance as I (with hindsight) stupidly cancelled it.

What are my options to get the phone fixed/replaced at the lowest cost?

A new screen fitted by Apple is around £100.

Take it the 1 year warranty from Apple won't cover it?

No chance , have you tried your house insurance ?
Might not be worth it with any excess.

Why people don't take out insurance on these phones nowadays?

These things are worth £600+ and you're using them everyday. You're bound to have an accident with it at some point.

Get it fixed either by apple or just a corner shop and then take out insurance on it. Costs like £7/month. Some current accounts also offer phone insurance so check that too.

I wouldn't take it to a corner shop simply because the phone is still under warranty with Apple and Apple won't ever touch a phone that's been opened by a 3rd party, even if under warranty.
OP might need to use the warranty in the future and using a 3rd party would invalidate it. Also, the corner shop guys would need to move the old home button onto the new screen assembly to preserve touch ID function and they generally just fit a new assembly with a new home button and front camera as it is much quicker (I have changed an iPhone screen so I know which option I would go for if I was trying to do the minimum work possible).

Best thing is to take it to Apple and let them replace the screen out of warranty.

As for insurance... better to keep the money you'd pay for insurance into a savings account and self-insure.
