Toasted sarnies
Are toasted sandwiches naughtier or the same as a regular sandwich ?
They have the same ingredients but they just seem naughtier somehow but I can't put my finger on why. |

I can't have a toasted sandwich unless it's got cheese in it. Lots of melted cheese, yummy!
And salad can't really be put into a toasted sandwich so yes, toasted sandwiches are definitely naughty. |

I generally use more butter with a toasted sarnie - so I think they are naughtier. I generally stick with cheese in mine with an occasional slice of ham. I have bought many toastie makers over the years and the innards always leak out.

It's probably because the bread is buttered on both sides and that they're not really like normal toast.
I do them in the griddle pan, a lot easier than using one of those machine, obviously they don't get sealed but that doesn't bother me. |

Must say I never eat bread unless its been toasted and I have no problem with it being cold. Maybe you could say I always eat toasties.

You can put cheese and baked beans in a toastie.
You can't in a sandwich (successfully anyway.) I wouldn't say they're naughty in any way, though. |

The best toasties i ever had were the result of a 2am drunken experiment when i was about 18- creamy garlic mushrooms. They were exceptional in a toastie! I've never been able to recreate it over the past 15 years
I don't use any extra butter in a toastie compared to a piece, but i still find them more indulgent! |

How do you make the toasties then? If you use a machine both sides need to be buttered and both sides need to be buttered if you use a griddle pan too.

I just butter the outside of the bread so it browns and doesn't stick. I don't put butter on the inside.
One toastie I recommend is scrambled egg and bacon. Of course you have to cook it first, but its very tasty held inside a toasty sandwich. |

I know you didn't ask me but with my Breville I just butter the outside. How would the Breville even know whats inside?

When I used to have toasted sarnies, my favourite was cheese and onion, sometimes with ham. I did them in a toastie bag. Luckily my toaster has wide and deep slots so it all gets cooked properly. They were lovely.
Unfortunately I very rarely have bread now, too many carbs. |

I don't butter the inside and use frylight/oil spray on the outside which works well.
I had chicken, bacon and cheese today which was yummy. Salad on the side. |

I think they are inherently naughtier because of what's in them.
I had a mixed salad regular sandwich (with peppers) for lunch. Can't see that working in a toasted sandwich. For me there must be lots of cheese and butter, with perhaps sausage or bacon etc

I don't really eat normal sandwiches any more and if I do it either a wrap, flatbready thing or thin so definitely naughtier for me.
Personally I love them with american/processed cheese, beans and onion. |

I think they're naughtier than a sandwich because there closer to a real hot meal. Insubstantional but so delicious and convenient.

I don't butter the inside or the outside of the bread when I'm making a toasted sandwich.
So in that way I suppose it's not naughty at all, seeing as it less fattening than an ordinary sandwich. |

My favourite toasted sandwich is ham....i.e. make a traditional ham sandwich with butter inside and then turn on grill and toast both sides. The butter melts into the ham so you have a slurpy middle, but a crisp outside.

I though you had to butter the outside of the bread or it would stick ?
Otherwise you can do them on a griddle pan or under the grill and they won't stick. Butter is mostly for flavour and colour. |
