Just heard this on Radio 5.

Their new Amazon show.

It will be known as G.T. for short.

Hmm, G.T. very much like T.G.

How soon before it's renamed "Grand Tool"?

I just did.

I found the name a bit underwhelming at first. I was expecting some sort of clever pun or innuendo. The Grand Tour seems a bit middle of the road for those three. That said there are somewhat restricted by legal constraints are they made clear.

That said, considering the show will move from place to place every week and be a truly worldwide programme, I think it's an apt name. From what has been revealed, the Grand Tour seems to have an interesting premise, a combination of the Top Gear the show and Top Gear live.

It will be like TG, just back to front

It's was always going to be slightly car ish in its name. What did people expect?

Not Top Gear?

Turbo Boost?

Big End?

I think it's probably the classiest thing about the show.

The Wonderful Automobile Television Show

I'm not sure what the acronym would be for that though.

The more I think of it, the better it seems. Underwhelming at first, but the acronyms fit the Top Gear team/trio and it seems to actually describe what they are going to do too.

I do suspect "grand tool" will be heard several times throughout the run too.

Grand Tour International, with the acronym G.T.I. would have been better.

P.S. When are they going to announce the dates for each countries show?

Think the abbreviation "GT" goes back a lot further than a Playstation game.

Shame they didn't take up a suggestion on Twitter:

"Wacky Racists".

Name is a little "meh" imho but the concept I like. I guess they saw how well their tours worked and decided to replicate that by taking the "studio" to different locations. I'm guessing the rest will be filmed prior.

It's a very boring, very professional name, I wonder if Amazon might be sanitising them.

One thing is for sure...they won't have the same freedoms that they did with the BBC.

Jeremy Clarkson did an interview with the Times a few weeks back, and it was done on location...somewhere hot...

The trio were dumping rusty cars into the sea off the coast of an island somewhere hot, in order to create an artificial reef.

So that's the kind of thing they'll be doing now.

They will do it with their usual irreverence, and it'll be funny......but it comes across as sanitised and possibly they have too much money to spend, making the stunts a little too polished and professional.

What I liked about Top Gear was that they would get a landrover and roll it over a cliff to see if it still worked afterwards....and it would be a cold drizzly day, and they would get a bit too close to a passer by walking a dog....

Those days are gone it seems.

They had Top Gear then there was Fifth Gear so I though going along the same lines they could have called the new show Reverse!

Maybe it should have been Last Of The Summer Rides in tribute to the show where stars go for their last gig.

Yep, Clarkson said they are contractually unable to use the words "Top" and "Gear" (and a few others)

Which kind of suggests that Amazon are keeping them on a tighter leash than the BBC did.

It's possibly not down to Amazon though. Could be BBC lawyers preventing them.

They have always said they will have more freedom with Amazon, as they don't have the licence fee payers moaning constantly at them.

Why don't we actually wait until the programme launches to judge it. Ok the name is a bit naff. Top Gear just rolled off the tongue "Wanna watch Top Gear" etc, whereas saying "Wanna watch The Grand Tour" sounds a bit weird and formal. I guess once people get used to the show, we will be saying "watch GT" but early on no one will know what that is, it will need to build up a fan base for that.

It was in the terms of their BBC contract apparently - just like they couldn't work on any UK network TV channel
