Hi,

Is it possible to update Firmware on my Panasonic Blu-ray by ethernet cable without using a screen e.g. television?

Cheers in advance.

Most have 'automatically update' on by default, but you might need to press an 'OK' button to make it start. Not easy if you can't see the screen...

Ok. Would a connection to a laptop help? I have only one socket and my television is too far away from it!

You could turn on internet connection sharing (ICS) on your laptop then connect the Blu ray player to your laptop with an Ethernet cable and update it this way.

If the player has some form of composite video output in addition to HDMI then you could use a USB video capture device plugged into the laptop to view the player output.

If not you will also need a HDMI to Composite video converter box to feed the capture device.

Would be easier to plug the player into the telly.

And incidentally, what socket are you talking about?

does firmware make much of a difference to a device?

It would be if l had a 30 metre plus ethernet cable.

I'm talking about the telephone master socket.

That is me to find out as l have a Blu-ray disc that my Panasonic can't read! I have tried the disc on a different player and it worked fine. Also there are times when pictures kept breaking up. l have clean the discs and lens, sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't!

Presumably that is where your broadband router is plugged in then? A cable would be the best option if you could run it easily. If you can get a decent WiFi signal next to the TV from your router you could always use a WIFi adapter to connect the player to your router, eg

Another option would be powerline adapters to feed the network to the TV position.

If you have a computer monitor with DVI input then you could plug that into the player with a simple HDMI to DVI lead.

A firmware update might help the first problem. It is however unlikely to affect the second. That sounds more like a failing laser which no amount of firmware updating is ever going to fix.

Thanks for all replies and advice.

I tried to download the firmware updates from the Panasonic web site but a pop-up from my security software keeps appearing and advising me that the download contains viruses and malware.

Is my security over-protected?
