so this:

http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/doctor-...c-screwdriver/

seems a bit unfair!

Not sure why the North Americans get this available in their stores before we do.

Could have sworn that this is a BBC UK show

Im sure it will follow soon enough.... but still!

That URL gives me a 404 not found. But Christ, it's 19MB in size!

What's new about this sonic screwdriver? I remember people in other threads were adamant that the new sonic at the end of Hell Bent was already in the shops.

So what did DS9 mean, last year?

So was the introduction of the sonic (given that the sunglasses were back in the very next episode) a "quick Christmas merchandising opportunity" after all?

Out of curiosity, how many of you like the design? I think it's a horrible, over-fussy mess. I wish they'd come up with a beefed-up version of the classic series one.

Tom's looks like a scientific instrument, not least due to the way it has to be used upright.

The problem with all the new sonics is that they're used flat, which add to them feeling like guns all too often.

If you imagine Tom Baker's Doctor holding out his sonic as a weapon, it would feel like a bluff, just like a deadly jellybaby (or a Jammy Dodger as that joke got rehashed).

Sure, but on the other hand, the new ones actually look like screwdrivers. They probably took that a bit literally, really.

Except, the 'scandal' is this forum's, not the BBC's.

Someone on here claimed the sonic screwdriver was deliberately included in Hell Bent because it *was* a piece of Christmas merchandising. Then, someone else on this forum claims it's first available in May (that wouldn't be in time for Christmas, then?), "but only in North America!".

This is all crap, because within 24 hours of that post, someone else on the forum has bought two from a shop in Bradford (is that in North America?). This is all pointed out, then people get all passive-defensive (of something that's not theirs to defend).

Sums up Dr Who fans, for you.

Well, that was my point. Glad you finally grasped the the absurdity of it all.

Just to spell it out to anyone less cleverer that what how you are, the new sonic toy isn't available in North America only — A bloke bought two from a shop in Bradford, Europe within 24 hours of this thread being started.

erm... calm down there.

As the OP, i can state that at the time of posting, my point was valid and correct. The sonic was announced, and available for purchase 'in stock' in the USA only.

Things moved quickly.

The next day it appeared for 'pre order' on some websites such as Forbidden Planet which was quoting a late May availability, AND almost straight away it appeared in some Toys R Us Stores.

So, yes, i look a bit silly here as it was a matter of hours later that it was available to purchase in the UK.

But, it was true at the time I first mentioned it.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing eh. Dont all speculative threads become a proven fact after the event? Apologies for the initial short lived relevance of my post.

... and for the record... I got mine in Toys R Us on Sunday.... and for those interested, its a very good replica toy for the money.

A bloke bought two within hours of your thread from a shop in England. The lorry must have delivered them to that shop by the time you started the thread otherwise they wouldn't have been on the shelves the following morning.

That's all I'm saying. I don't need to calm down because I'm not the one tutting and talking about scandals.

I've never been to Bradford therefore it doesn't exist. QED.

Yes, there was a little mix up on what was going on, which you were quick to pick up on. Nobody actually cares. Do you want people flogged for making mistakes or something?

Let's just all be happy the new sonic screwdriver is getting around.
