I'd say that it was Italy's answer to
that particular level of TV drama; the Premier League of recent shows that would include BB, Sopranos and The Wire. It is, by some distance, the best in-house production that any division of Sky has made.
On a show-to-show level, Gomorrah displays clear influences from most of them. Its use of little vignettes as cold opens is very much a Breaking Bad device -think of the recent scene showing the manufacture of the 3D gun without revealing who was making it, or why, until later on in the episode. That could easily have fit into an episode of Breaking Bad (or Better Call Saul, which follows the same pattern).
It's frequent and confident use of wordless scenes and letting the action (or simply the scenery) do the talking instead is also a Breaking Bad thing.
It resembles The Wire in showing the Camorristi operation from the top to the bottom and in offering tantalising glimpses into the wider operation (think the Greek in the Wire and the Honduras and Russian Mob connections in Gomorrah). Personally, I'd like to see Gomorrah explore more of these connections but I can understand the strong focus on the Naples operations. A strong adherence to one particular city is also very much like The Wire's disciplined focus on Baltmore.
Season 2 also shows clear parallels with the character arcs of Avon Barksdale, Stringer Bell and Marlo Stanfield. I'll leave you all to work them out for the sake of not spoiling any non-Wire watchers. (More accurately, those who have yet to watch The Wire. If you're enjoying Gomorrah and haven't seen The Wire yet, you're in for a treat).
Sopranos? How about having pretty much every important character be some shade of scumbag. It's certainly possible to sympathise with several of the characters in either show but I can't think of a single one that I'd leave my kids with.
