I only have vague childhood memories of Brian, but Nurse Platt was shockingly bad.

I agree. I thought he played the self-centred 'Our Brian' pretty well. He didn't seem to have a great range of acting skills but this was probably magnified by some of the great character actors he was playing opposite at the time.

Because it would quite clearly be an old photograph with a younger looking Gail of a similar age stood next to him (I can't remember if we saw the photo or whether Gail was in the picture but I'm just guessing)

Presuming again but Gail and/or Sarah would have told her previously that Brian died fairly young so would expect him to be young in the picture.

That scene where Don and Alf break the news to Ivy about Brian's murder is one of my favourites. I always thought Lynne Perrie was an excellent actress, in everything she was in, but her acting here was so powerful.

Ivy Vs Gail in the '90s was great:

Possible, but remember that Gail has one brother (or possibly two?) whom they've never met. As well as the Australian cousin. Even with Gail in the photo, As well as schoolmates, colleagues and bosses. It could have been any of those.

Yes, it was Robocop 2, I remember he had a tiny, tiny part as a journalist.

His last TV credit, according to IMDB was an episode of 'Doctors' in 2000, although his Wiki page states that he was doing pantomime in 2010 and 2011.
