I don't usually watch ee, but saw about ten mins tonight. Question is in the title. The sets look awful, and well, like sets. The cafe in particular looks like it's made of paper.

That is one reason why the whole set is to be rebuilt (over time), plus much of the existing set was never built for HD (which of course shows up the flaws and wear & tear much more than SD).

The Vic bar set looks awful. The redesign after the fire was foul.

The sets last night looked absolutely awful. Canary Wharf and Tower Bridge in particular.

I actually think the EastEnders sets look a lot more authentic than those in Corrie and Emmerdale, which often look very pristine and 'polished'. Not like real houses at all.

There are certain EE sets I don't like (the Vic and cafe are awful) but most of them look pretty good.

I like The Cafe and a few of the houses. I always thought the Branning household was a great set!

The Vic could do with a major revamp though. Especially upstairs.

The Vic looked the best when Sharon first redecorated following the early 90s fire. Peggy had it looking nice too.

Kat and Alfie ruined the place and Mick and Linda haven't really altered it too much. So it still looks awful but at least that lime green bar is no more.

If they looked expensive, you'd get all the anti license fee people up in arms.

Only Bryan Kirkwood could come in and give the Vic a lime green bar and zebra print bar stools.

The street where Peggy used to live looked fake, although I'm almost certain it wasn't.

Oh, it looked absolutely dreadful when Kat and Alfie were in there 2010-2013!

I think it looked great 2007-2010 when Peggy was landlady. It was classy upstairs and the pub part was fine. I don't know why they had to change it so much.

Cheap in which way? In that they don't look solid and as if they wobble (so sets rather than real buildings) or that the quality of the furnishings, wallpaper etc isn't good quality?

With regard to the first, I don't think they do look that bad, of course you can tell they're sets rather than filming inside a real building but I think that is true of most shows.

The second, very few characters are meant to have much money so won't be able to afford nice things. Those that do have money, tend not to have very good taste so again, you wouldn't expect it to look great.

I think most of the sets and the square look lived in but The Vic has been an abomination since Kat and Alfie took it over in 2010. At least the front has been repainted now but the inside still looks horrible.

I think in large part it's just the higher resolution really.

The old clips on youtube have that blur which helps maintain the illusion.

Cheap in they look like sets for a school play.

I think that you are exaggerating more than a little there

One thing I've noticed from looking at past clips on YouTube is how realistic the bar in the Vic used to look. It used to look so realistic, now not so much.

The justification for the awful Vic interior was that it reflected Kat and Alfie's tastes, but if you run a pub you have to balance your own taste with customer experience (not that I ever have but it seems pretty obvious especially if your taste is parrot wallpaper or leopard print). It's one thing to have upstairs to your own taste but downstairs shouldn't be a continuation of your home. It's a business.

It's better since they got rid of the lime green bar and zebra print bar stools (what were they thinking!) and imo it still looks like a real pub (I've been in some places that have looked worse) but I'm not a fan of the hideous yellow they have on the bottom half of the walls.
