Channel 4 and Walter Presents in particular is starting to annoy me. Channel 4 is five days a week wall-to-wall reality and lifestyle tv shows and at the weekend double-hearder movies and yet they think it is hipster cool with bald, speccy Italian bloke Walter Jacuzzi or whatever putting all the new foreign dramas on All 4 only.

Channel 4, if your schedules were heaving under the strain of night after night of home produced dramas, this would almost make sense. But after Indian Summers shutters for good tonight, there are none, what are they playing at ?

I guess it's to promote all4?

But I think they should just put all these Walter Presents programmes on more4, at least they'd be in one place....

When this airs on Tuesday night, hope everyone contacts Channel 4 to ask them to put the whole series on television, watching a quality drama on a noisy pc or a tiny laptop or tablet screen, just does not do it justice.

Quite odd as only a couple of weeks back they shunted their 10pm schedule for the full week to show Flowers.

Everybody watch this tomorrow night then drop Channel 4 viewers feedback staff a mail and request they keep it on television, not too cool for school Walter Present online only nonsense. Sick of Channel 4's reality tv addiction, as bad as mid-2000s.

Either buy a decent Smart TV or a TV stick to plug into a basic TV.

CH4 would have got excellent viewing figures for Blue Eyes - which has been a cracking series so far.

I never fail to be amazed at how popular all of this reality/celebrity cobblers seems to be - I have never watched any of it.

Remember way way back, when More4 opened with much fanfare as Channel Four's new home for The Arts, culture and foreign film and drama?

I was just thinking about it the other day, while watching thirteen episodes of Come Dine With Me from 2008 in a row, that they'd just shown the Saturday before.

I don't use Channel 4 catch up. But isn't "All 4" a generic term for all Channel 4, E4, More4 programmes on catch up? Therefore you should be able to watch "Locked Up" on television, just not in real time. Although, thinking about it, why'd they put a brand new show on a catch up service and not give it a normal run on television.

I think some of you are missing my wider point, since this Walter Presents nonsense started in January, they are trying to set All 4 up as a new media platform, separate from television channels. I am poor and can't afford a smart tv or stick and my pc sounds like a lawnmower, so watching stuff online is painful.

It appears the unparalleled success of Deutschland 83 hasn't encouraged them to follow through with more imports on the main channel. Mystifying.

Is this similar to what BBC are trying with BBC3 ?

I'd be interested to know if BBC3 viewing figures have now fallen off a cliff.........and if the common view, like mine. is that BBC3 used to be a TV channel but it no longer exists.

No, because that never happened.

Whilst it has certainly weakened its ambition, it was always intended to primarily be a channel for "factual" programmes, i.e. things like Come Dine with Me and Grand Designs.

A baffling decision tonight though, I will not be watching as there seems no point if I am not going to be watching subsequent episodes. I will, though, contact Channel 4 and tell them why as I would liked to have watched the series.

I'm confused too, because All4 is one of the channels on the Sky+ catch-up service but it doesn't appear to include the much-vaunted Walter stuff. Is Walter Presents just a watch-on-your-computer thing, rather than a proper on-demand service?

Perhaps they got the rights cheap if they only aired online as opposed to broadcast telly?

Might've worked if Four's on-demand service wasn't so bloody awful. Why is it only the Beeb that manage to make online viewing easy to use?

Another puzzling point is that this show doesn't shout out at being focused for the viewers who are happy to watch on a tablet etc.

What i don't understand about this fiasco is why Ch4 have decided Locked Up is only worth having Ep1 shown on the channel and then have the rest of the complete series available only on the All4 platform.

What's even more baffling is More4 (available on Freeview, etc) have already screened 3 foreign dramas on their channel this year - Spin, Thicker Than Water and currently being shown Blue Eyes. So what makes those 3 good enough to be shown on there and Locked Up not? Why couldn't Locked Up be shown on there instead?

What i hate even more about this is that i saw the ad for it on Ch4 and it looks fantastic. Something i'd really be into (loved Prison Break on Ch5!) and enjoy watching. It's been renewed for another series, the lead actress Maggie Civantos has won awards for her performance and it currently has an 8.1 rating on IMDB.

What a stupid decision NOT to air the whole series on CH4! They did it with Deutschland 83, so what's the problem?

If they were doing it now to "set All 4 up as a new media platform, separate from television channels" they would not be showing an episode on TV at all.

But there have been four programmes broadcast on TV under the Walter Presents banner and only made available on All4 following broadcast, as a normal catchup service.

Several more programmes have been made available exclusively via All4 with no episodes on TV, although they have been trailed on their channels.

So there is clearly a marked different strategy for this programme that is not explained in post #14.

Even if they just wanted promote the All4 platform, there is a better way of doing it. Sky are currently offering the full series of some of their programmes on their streaming service alongside the weekly broadcasts.

This way those inclined to use Sky Go or Catchup will do so to see the episodes sooner, whilst they also get to keep the audience who will not watch that way for whatever reason.

The Tunnel was released this way, yet is still getting around 300k viewers per week for its first airing despite the full series also being available. And 300k would be a good rating for More4.

With suitable publicity, as was given to Deutschland 83 or the first series of Les Revenants, they could have had good ratings on TV and promoted the All4 service. Instead it seems they are just annoying potential viewers whilst most who will watch on All4 will already know about that service, it is promoted on screen during their other subtitled programmes anyway,

I think it covers it just fine. They are broadcasting ep1 as a teaser for those who wouldn't usually use the All4 site.

You've pointed out two different strategies they've already used. This is another.
Maybe they're trying to work out which works best.
