I think if Uncharted 5 does end up having Sam there'll need to be some solid character development in the early game, as well as having some compelling side-characters to support him (as well as Sully ofc).”
I don't think it's particularly surprising that you didn't care about whether or not Sam bites the bullet. I mean yeah, we love Nate, and Nate loves him, but that's the only connection to his character I was really feeling.
He behaves like a ******** for most of the game, guilt-tripping Nate into "getting back into the game" with some made up bullshit about Hector Alcazar, which almost costs Nate his peaceful setup, marriage and life. Not to mention that Sam didn't bother to see Nate for 2 years after getting out of prison, and then to cap it off, Sam abandons them at the very end to continue his treasure hunt after Nate, Elena and Sully bust their balls to save him. Him also not liking fan favourite Sully also doesn't help.
Thinking about it, I'm starting to think he wasn't meant to be likable
