My first contest that I remember was 97 and my Auntie was moaning that katrina was American when she won
People would dare moan if it happened again . BTW Lucky to see the win!

UK charts are out:

Frans beats Joe and Jake!

Frans 61 (39 on sales only chart)
Joe and Jake 81 (31 on the sales only chart)

Not on the main chart but on the sales chart are:
Dami at 54, Poli at 74, Sergey at 75 and at 92 is a reentry for Heroes by Mans Sell-me-love

The ESC compilation is at 9 on the compilation charts (its usual peak)

So if we were using the old chart methodology we'd have 5 ESC songs in the top 75. I hate streaming

Joe & Jake were in the top 20 or so for a large portion of the week.

My first memory was Gina G in 96. My parents were in the pub trade back then so Eurovision was on an 'unofficial list' of big tv and sporting events you stick on for the punters. Me and my friends were obsessed with Ooh Aah and used to sing and dance in the middle of a packed pub for the customers. It was a different time back then, we were only naive 8 year olds, we didn't know how dodgy the lyrics were!

Haha. Frans that low despite clocking streams and Radio 1 (eff off) play. Poor Dami though a proper pop song. If it was sung by Sia etc etc etc!

Really low positions all round. A far cry from Common Linnets, Conchita, Loreen clocking high chart positions.

Haha. Lisa. I think Gina G was our best ever Eurovision entry with Katrina a very close second and probably would have destroyed the televote!

Aw streaming really has ruined the charts now! Songs that have little or no radio play stand no chance of impact. Winners of X factor and the voice etc, Eurovision, flash in the pan charity singles etc. All will suffer as a result. The little 2012-14 thing we had where songs got into the chart are over!

Birmingham 98 was my first. Feeling old.
Bollocks to "feeling old", that was arguably the best contest ever.

Exciting voting as well.

Gina G in studio form is better than Shady Lady. (only by a little tho. )

I made this point before the contest but streaming really has killed all chances of Eurovision chart success. It's a real shame.

I think Sound Of Silence is becoming the most overrated Eurovision song in history. It's God awful.

This My friends in Geography, who are well aware that I'm a massive Eurovision fan said their favourites were Sweden and Australia, which were my #42 and #41

My first Eurovision memory was the 2006 semi finals (I was 6) and I was upset that the Netherlands didn't qualify and my mum absolutely loved Cyprus. Finland was a great winner though

The 2 plays he got on Radio 1 were hardly going to matter

I vaguely remember seeing bits of Contests from the late 80s/early 90s but the first one I can really remember watching fully was Millstreet 1993.

The showdown at the end between Niamh Kavanagh and Sonia courtesy of the Maltese jury got me hooked - even as an 11 year old.

What year did all the flag waving and "party" atmosphere come in?
I know 1998,1999 etc, it was a lot of people just sitting down and watching.

Well 1998 was the first contest to bring it into an 'arena' feel. 2000 I feel was an important contest in getting crowd reaction, with 2002/3 bringing it more into the atmosphere.

Aaaah loving the Eurovision memories!

My first Eurovision memory is Sonia competing - I loved that song so much in those days. Wasn't allowed to stay up to watch though as I was too young! My mum told me the results the next day. I remember being outraged that she didn't win!

I have really fond memories of 94, 95 and 96 too as I loved all those songs and was allowed to stay up to watch our performances (but not the entire show!). We used to sing the chorus to Love City Groove at school - seems so inappropriate now! Gina G too!

1997 was the first competition I was allowed to watch in it's entirety and it turned out to be a pretty good one for a young budding fan!

having watched a load of ESC's in the run up to Stockholm I noticed it was the Scandi contests where the audiences a) got really big and b) started to bring in a few flags and banners.
85 Gothenburg
92 Malmo

and then the Irish ones in the 90s got very lively but I think it was Globen in 2000 where it really went mad

Forgot the reason I came on - Gogglebox showed Russia's performance and most of them loved it.

Chris & Stephen talked about them possibly representing the UK next year but by miming Milli Vanilli style...

My first full Eurovision would have been 2000 when I was 10. I was sent to bed before the results in 98 and 99 and sadly cant remember seeing any of the 1997 one!

I remember by dad trying to explain Dana International to me on the Sunday morning, but I remember being more confused about how Israel was in Europe rather than her gender and past gender which my dad was going on about! I think even he was confused why I didn't find that odd, but had more questions about Europes geography!

Funny thinking about it now

I can't really think what contest I remember as a whole. I definitely knew of Ruslana as a winner and I knew our entries from 2005 onwards.

I tweeted about watching the semifinals in 2009. So I guess that's my definitive first memory. It has been documented.

i cant remember specifically but the first time i was allowed to stay up to see the results was in 2004 when wild dances won, i remember someone telling me she had an album with all different types of dances like 'love dance' and some others i cant remember. i found this really interesting and i have no idea why in retrospect. but i have been hooked since then. it all made sense when i realised i was a really a flamboyant male homosexual on the inside .

1996 is my first memory as Gina G was being hyped *everywhere*, appearing on all the kids shows and probably Saturday morning TV too. I remember Newsround doing a feature on it and saying she was likely to win - I think if televoting had existed back then she'd have absolutely stormed it, but the baffled - probably elderly - juries marked her down.

First I remember actually watching all the way through was 2002, no youtube then but you could listen to all the songs on the Eurovision website in low quality audio, or even lower quality video - think they had a chatroom too where each evening one of the acts would enter and answer questions, which in the pre-Twitter age seemed extremely cool. 2003 was the first to get me really hooked though - Tatu, *that* UK result and one of the closest ever finishes!

Aah, loving all these memories

I've shared mine far too many times, and seeing which contests you lost your respective Eurovision virginities to makes me feel older than Lys Assia

I can't believe people are still bringing up conspiracies that the EBU wanted Australia to win… It reminds me of that belief that the EBU asked the juries to vote for Italy in 2011. Because seemingly jazz can't be an attractive genre for music professionals?

My first memory is 1997, when I was 5, as I distinctly recall being in my grandparents back garden and my mum announcing that the UK had won.

My first proper memory, though, is a postcard from Israel 1999, when someone used the salt from the Dead Sea to draw a heart on their back. Would love to see that again but have never been able to find it!

The first song I ever remember moving me is Iceland 2003, when I was 11. It was the first contest I had actively looked forward to and the UK got 0! Birgitta remains an all-time fave for me. Open Your Heart has a very, very special place in my personal history.

I love how at 8 years old you were there question Israels participation and place in the world . I only know the European map because of Eurovision I think.
