my two pennies worth on last night's proceedings:
"if it's not broken why fix it?" was my attitude to the voting system change. After all the bitterness of the period up to 2008 we'd finally buried the issue of the biases in the voting (ie, diaspora effect). Now it's all back on again and I fear we've a few more years of this before they address it. We have gone round in circles. Yes the new system makes for 'better TV' but the price is the credibility of the votes. Why can't they ditch both televoting and juries and have an app that only allows one person to vote once (for all the songs or just the ones they like)? That would stop the diasporas hijacking the vote, stop jury 'deals' and weird decisions... surely it's possible in this day and age? I'm not a huge fan of the winner. We need ESC winners to be hits and this won't be in Western Europe. I suspect Ola Sand's panic stricken face betrayed his nightmare vision of 12 months trying to keep the show on the road: Kyiv last time was exasperating for the EBU. Besides Ukraine simply cannot afford this luxury now. Chuffed to see Poli do so well with my fave of the season. If only I'd put money on her... The Swedes raised their game. I thought Malmo was a bit bargain basement but Stockholm delivered As for the UK... I wasn't surprised at 24th though I felt for the boys. Everyone else has raised their game so much that we are simply not keeping up. Our song had no 'edge' to it. That it got 0 in the OGAE vote, flopped on itunes pre-contest and was never higher than 26 in the online polls was a clear sign what was coming. Like Germany we have no diaspora, no friendly voting neighbours so when we send entries that are 'OK' the inevitable bottom of the scoreboard place awaits. In the year that Wogan died his legacy, I'm afraid, lives on. The chickens of years of mockery continue to come home to roost. Encouragingly, despite all our flops I do detect the media and the wider public are letting go of some of the old chestnuts (we hear less of..."cheesey, rubbish music", "our songs are masterpieces that deserve to win", "a programme that's torture to watch"). Our only hope is that anew generation seize the reigns within the BBC and record industry and make this work like the Aussies are doing. so 2016, an interesting year but I think we're in for a bumpy year or two ahead. |

I get the impression Ukraine winning was something of a nightmare scenario for Jon Ola Sand. Wouldn't be surprised if he stepped down and let Bjorkman handle the inevitable drama.

I think the only logical thing to do to conquer some of the political voting would be to present the performances to the Jury's anonymously. Since the big run throughs are designed for the juries to do their voting, they should present each entry as Song 1,2,3 etc. I guess the downside to that would be having to lock people away so they don't catch wind of other countries songs
Not exactly like the song languages would give much away either since most countries take the easy way out and perform in english

i think we need to move away from juries and find a way the people can vote that sidelines the speed dialling diasporas. But televote money is attractive to the broadcasters .... I think Bjorkman's experiments with app voting in Melodifestivalen is the next 'innovation' he'll try to introduce to Eurovision.

Ahh, app voting... Something which totally messed up heat one of Melfest last year, imagine if that happened in the contest?! I think it was totally fine this year though, so...

we'd need back up juries in case of technical problems...just like we did wen it was televote only. I'm sure the Swedes will iron out any app issues before taking it to Eurovision

I've took the opposite approach this year in regards to Eurovision. After the final I end up discarding the songs I downloaded, I don't know why, after Eurovision I just go off them. I know that Sound of Silence is gonna be a keeper. I found myself downloading Barei. Took up until today to like it. I swear I think the only song I still occasionally listen to is Maja Keuc - No One. Soooooo good

Seems that Denmarks jury vote may have been announced incorrectly on the night according to this article. Ukraine was announced as getting 12 points from the Danish jury but actually should have got zero and Australia got 12 not 10 . This technically reduces Ukraines winning margin over the Aussies from 23 to just 9 points. The UK got 3 points from the Danish jury on the official figures - but this should have been zero.
Seems one juror - B - scored her top choice as 26 and her bottom song as 1 - the wrong way round! And she didn't notice her mistake until it was too late. She meant to put Australia top and Russia third but her votes were recorded as Australia 26th and last and Russia 24th. So human error by the juror. The official votes on the night cannot be changed so the announced points stand - but you do wonder if a country like Denmark can mess up what other mistakes might have been made?! Such a huge shift - 12 pts to zero for a country due to one jurors error?! http://www.aftonbladet.se/nojesblade...cle22823256.ab Actual results on the night - which were wrong?! http://www.eurovision.tv/page/result...=2113&voter=DK |

I do wonder if Ukraine will actually host I know they did JESC recently but a lot ha's changed since then and from a logistics point of view it's probably one of the worst results for the EBU, and isn't the Ukrainian broadcaster on hard times, they wouldn't want to be bankrupt them forrcing them to host- It'll be interesting to see what happens with this one

The one thing I will give to the Danes, that's a good measure of their integrity as no-one could have seen her scores else surely they'd have mentioned something!

Happy post Eurovish Monday everyone
![]() I have to say in my opinion that was probably the best Eurovision ever. The running order seemed to flow quite nicely - although I'd rather the Czechs weren't on 2nd. Great hosting from Petra & Mans I thought, can they host next year too. Love Love Peace Peace was amazing! The results were very exciting and the mixture of the jury results was exciting too. Disappointed for the Czech 0 and the disappointing televote score for the UK - I thought the final jury position for the UK was a fair one. Haven't delved too much into the televote scores, though I see Serbia benefitted hugely from their neighbours and no one else seemed to like it! Nice result for San Marino too, I had a feeling it'd do OK in the televote. Glad we didn't have to suffer B&H in the final after coming 11th in the semi. On the night I actually had Ukraine as my number 1. I can understand why Russia was undermarked by the juries - lots of style without substance perhaps? So happy for Bulgaria too, what a great result for them! Also I ranked Georgia 4th - so my taste is a bit all over the place ![]() The one thing that really irritated me though was the Polish televote result - 3rd really!? And the Poles & LIthuanians dominated the UK vote once more. Bulgaria was our real No 1 ![]() Not really on a post Eurovish come down yet. I forgot to record it Saturday - didn't realise the series link I set on Tuesday does not work across channels. Oops. But there is youtube at least! |

I loved Serbia , that was kind of very close to home for me some years ago . Good for her for highlighting this domestic abuse problem. Might have been a bit to serious for some people but then many songs have highlighted darker things over the years. Nothing that unusual. Hungary's Kalley Saunders did a song with a similar theme back in 2014 and placed quite well. This year song a case in point.
While watching Serbia there was one brief moment where she shrugged the guy off and i imagined her socking him one lol. She gave him such a look . Makes me laugh when people whine about their song not doing well after the contest. Lots of countries and different strokes for different folks. Also the more countries who enter make it more difficult to win. I don't think they should be sacking anyone because a particular country's song didn't make expectations. Its best thinking positive but not having too much expectation. less disappointment that way although by all means get behind and promote the act. . |
