It was windmachines at dawn when Carola Classic took on Carola Nitrate, and, in the end, her 2006 incarnation won out. This is an absolute barnstormer of a schlager bop, though, and you certainly don't get dancers like THAT anymore...

The leather trousers just weren't enough. Everyone's favourite Irish-Australian crooner might be the only person to have won twice, but that wasn't enough to propel him into the Top 10. An absolute classic, for sure, but I think it lacks some of the emotional impact of What's Another Year.

Wrong way around there. The number of voters decide ties first, before most 12s, 10s, etc.

Pensioner cull continues a'pace, with Norway's inaugural victors missing out on a place in the Top 10. One of the stand-out winners of the 1980s, this was the year the Norwegians saw what Sweden was doing... and improved it!

Ah, I've always thought it was number of 12s, 10s a'la Eurovision.

Will swap that round in the results tally.

Eurovision is most voters and then number of 12s, 10s now. That's how Sofi got robbed by Tooji.

The most majestic head/neck choreography you will ever see on a Eurovision stage. Malta's premier belter, hotel receptionist and battleship skirted the rim of Eurovish Glory... and then came back with this. Not a terrible song by any means, but absolutely out of it's depth in a year that also featured Yohanna, Jade and Patricia. Bonus points for the 'rebel alliance' line, though.

Winning the tie, it's Donny from Lithuania - living proof that hitting the gym and losing your glittery eyemask can work wonders for your sex appeal. I really did enjoy this song, although the fact he missed the line directly following his cartwheel in both the Semi and Finale performances displays to me he isn't quite ready to dance'n'sing. Anton Ewald he ain't.

This was actually leading the (very) early rounds of voting, and then you all stopped voting for it. Made as a box of frogs and with the lung capacity of an Indian elephant, Kaliopi was born for the Eurovision stage and it's an absolute travesty this was denied a place in the final. Sleep tight, sweet princess.

Turkey can come back, on the proviso they stick to sending stuff like this and not monobrowed men toting gee-tars. Probably ahead of its time, but certainly one of the coolest entries of the 1990s...

Wobble yer jaws, lads, for she has arisen. THE schlager banger of the noughties? Perhaps we're all a little 'over' this now, but a decade after its birth it is still a total jam. I'd love to see her make one final, camp-as-tits return to MelFest (preferably without Andreas Johnson this time...)

An underrated gem, fo shiz, this is comfortably one of FYR Macedonia's best ever attempts. She put right all of the wrongs that waylaid her 2002 effort and came back with a #BalkanBelter. Is a comeback for our Kaz likely in 2017? I'm not sure, but checking out some of her non-ESC content is totes advisable. Bonus points for the ponytail.

Although she hay have arrived dressed as a glittery double-decker bus, Chiara's performance of Angel is, for me, the definitive moment of the 2005 contest. She came within a gnat's pube of winning the whole thing, and it would have been entirely deserved. This was another entry that achieved a lot of traction throughout, but never quite enough to push it Top 3.

Who says art can't imitate life? As in 2005, H-Pap goes one better than Chiara... An iconic winner, and one that cemented Greece's place as a forced to be reckoned with at noughties Eurovision.
