Good. I liked the format we had last time - face it, we're never gonna have a British Melfest, or not for many decades at least. I think we should be aiming for a selection event similar to what Germany has done for the last few years, one night, moving around the country, good but not excessive staging, with a very wide range of music. Last time was a good start towards it, even if the result in Stockholm wasn't so great - nice to see that Guy has learned from when he changed tack completely after an unsatisfactory result
. I still say that there should be more heavy involvement from BBC Introducing through the local radio stations - maybe one from each station then a radio-based preliminary to get the field down to 10?

I am glad we have one.
Looking back Darlene, Joe and Jake and Bianca were all decent quality, better than our usual standards, Dulcima were fun and with a revamp and better vocals were also nice, Karl had a good voice and his back catalogue was good, shame we got Miracle really, it was a bit of a snooze. It was only Matt's dated nonsense that was really BAD. |

I just hope they've sorted out the sound issues.... but I'm glad they were'nt put off by the low placing last year. Of course it all depends onthe songs but I'm hopefull as I get the impression they GF really is trying his hardest and learning as he goes along

It's not on the BBC entertainment news page.... That's probably a good thing but it shows it's not really a high priority for the BBC... compared with other countries that is

But I applaud them of not just throwing in the towel on a pretty underwealming placement and go back to the dreadful 1 song internal from a 100% public submission in 2015 or the dreadful 2012-13 model. I am surprised that BASCA and the BPI have partnered up again. That is a vote of confidence as the fact they want to associate themselves with it again. It is a long road back but it appears that BBC/Guy/Goldsmith etc are willing to make that journey. I just hope in the end it is all worth it. I expect a low key affair in 17 again. But BBC need to put in more money for a quality show with you know…actual staging. But one thing is for sure. Us fans will remember the "good is bad" but "great is needed" and "quality production" "composition and melody" caveats just in case the final products do not meet requirements. |

Nine entrants so far for the contest to find Eurovision's weirdest moment, keep them coming. A broad selection of choices so far, quite a few that haven't been a song, can be pretty much anything bizarre or funny associated with Eurovision or a national final.

Interesting link, thank you. It’s always interesting to hear something from the people involved and it’s good they acknowledge that we have a long way to climb back and rebuild our reputation in this Contest.
Putting the NF on the right channel would help. Eurovision does not belong on BBC Four. So much depends on precisely who is tuning in, just as the Contest's Semi Final audience is probably the fans and the Grand Final is everybody and his dog. We need to get the best chance to have the youngest, hippest audience possible who are most likely to know what will work best. You would have thought that a BBC One National Final would have been eminently sensible, it shows they take it seriously if anything else, something they put on a Saturday night and take Casualty off for a week – they have the space in the schedule to do that allowing for a week less of a summer holiday from Holby, as much as it will piss off some of their fans. I will settle for the 2017 Semi Finals on BBC Two which is a FAR more sensible place to put them than BBC Four. Hell, if BBC Two can find space for a glorified clip-show about another show about baking (RIP Bake Off), then they can manage Semi Finals too! I would concur about the local radio/regional TV angle as a means to broaden out the options – perhaps creating a YouTube page to let audiences see the entries on video and then compare with the live experience, as well as any past material they might have, interviews, gig footage etc and try to build something interactive and a bit more modern. Clearly trying to rigidly stick by the unwritten Contest rules hasn't worked very well for us in the last 15 or so years, so lets try something else. Speaking from the point of view of a Scot, there may also be a political dimension at work here in that there’s probably problem getting anybody remotely credible from Scotland singing for the UK – we may be past a threshold here. I would have said White who are young, very trendy and really quite good, as well as being a very interesting pick for something like this being part of a cultural renaissance going on semi-quietly for the last 35 years up here, but I can’t see somebody cool, never-mind Scottish doing it. Scottish people just don't feel all that British anymore. That will inevitably limit the range of entries available to a UK selection contest and the type of sound at their heart. I myself would favour the broadest possible option, perhaps a top 20 song line-up – two Semis to whittle it down to a final 6 to battle it out in early February for the poisoned chalice that is the UK slot. I also think they need to get people who have actually done Eurovision recently to sit on a larger jury (five seems reasonable) who actually have voting rights and can bring that experience to bare to push us away from weaker songs. I have the greatest respect for Katrina, I adore Love Shine a Light (and Walking on Sunshine), but that will be 20 years ago next May (six years before the Ukraine even debuted incidentally!). The Contest is totally different now and though her extensive professional experience and insight into the Contest from her association with it is useful, we need people sitting on a jury who have done it in the last five years (Molly comes to mind) as staging and technology become more central than ever. Also, the Beeb may wish if they are going to go to the trouble of getting doing as they did last time with Mans and getting Jamala, thinking carefully about when you put 1944 on in the show given the intensity of the song could overshadow or deflate the eventual selected entry rather as Katrina accidentally stole the thunder a bit from Joe and Jake. The sound issues and the presenter has to be fixed too, we need somebody a bit younger and cooler than Mel – she just doesn’t quite work as well without Sue and these are women in their forties. I would also learn the lessons of 2016 well. It doesn’t matter what language you sing in, or even the content of the song, it just needs to be done to an extremely high standard. She won with a song about ethnic cleansing for Christ's sakes! If the song gives people a strong emotional connection somehow, if it sounds interesting or distinctive and has some content, and I don’t mean political content, I mean a basic intellectual core, it is about something which people can understand and means something both within the source country and externally, then people will vote for it. So many of the people who voted for 1944 did so because they empathised with Jamala, they appreciated the music and staging as having artistic merit and they related to it in a profound way for whatever reason. We have never had a ‘money shot’, a killer moment that seals the deal, why not? Jamala managed to say more in fifteen seconds with that tree than Italy did in three minutes. That was a winner’s staging. Furthermore, she told a story, us understanding literally every word wasn’t important – it isn’t important we understand every word of Molitva, Hallelujah or Ne Partez pas Sans Moi. If we are to truly represent the United Kingdom and really reflect our country and who we are and where we’re going and show ourselves in a desperately needed positive light, I ask a serious question – does the song have to be entirely in English? Is there a BBC rule? There are what, 200 languages spoken in London? We have four indigenous languages in Scotland, none of which are English; English is not native to Wales, Cornwall or Northern Ireland. I don't want to bang the drum too much, but just how many people in the world do you think actually speak Crimean Tartar? The woman herself isn't actually fluent. I’m saying that we need to ask questions of every aspect of our Eurovision history and try something else because what we have done for the last ten years at least hasn’t worked and radical changes need to be made before the BBC does decide to pull the plug once and for all. As the great powerhouse of musical theatre (staging) and outside broadcasting (filming and major events), as the home of so much cultural capital (generating a good song), we should be really good at the bread and butter practicalities of this. If we can’t do something right, we should be brave enough to import in the talent. Staging is a weakness of ours in the modern era, bring in somebody from one of the Eastern or Nordic countries that do staging really well and give them a blank cheque to do anything they want. Also, we better be ready to go and seek votes from places of whom we disapprove, like Belarus, Russia and Azerbaijan because with all the post-Brexit nonsense, we ain’t gonna get anything from Poland no matter if we sent Adele. PS - my fantasy has always been to send Florence and the Machine then let Florence do whatever the hell she wants, but its just that, a fantasy, but it would be AWESOME! |
