Agree - it was not funny, and showed Paul to be cruel and so obsessed with his stupid 'revenge' that he has lost all sense of morality - if he ever had any. As someone posted above, he is too stupid and arrogant to be a good businessman. He's lost Lassiter's so many times - anyone else would have moved on. His current 'hotel' he sees as just a staging post for his return to Lassiter's. He never learns by his mistakes and always blames somebody else, which means he's basically stupid.

I think the character has come to the end of his usefulness- he's pathetic, arrogant for no good reason and he's way past his sell-by date as a ladies' man, Bin him!

I didn't find it funny either. It was cruel. Piper's cat won't be put down for eating a bird though - it's what cats do and owners aren't classed as taking responsibility for animals like dog owners are. Clemetine is safe.

The cat amongst the pigeons storyline was a step too far, for Neighbours and for Paul. I didn't find it entertaining or funny. Yes, cats are natural predators, but the storyline with Paul setting it up was off and unnecessary. To be honest I am fed up of the revenge storyline between Paul and Terese, the sooner they just shag, the better!

That's how I feel about it as well.

Certainly, if it had been a dog, it would have been put down though maybe they see cats differently as they will hunt birds if they are outside anyway so they already have a 'taste' for it.

I can see the 'black humour' side of it, i really can. Some of the lines did raise a wry smile from me.

But i just think it is more something i would expect to see in a 9pm sitcom (like the BlackAdder goes Forth episode which is hysterical) than a teatime soap.

That isn't a "think of the children" perspective (hate those tupes of complaints) - it just isn't something i'd expect in a G rated, feel good, family soap.

They made it 'feel good' with all the jokes but I do,'t really think it was a tasteful subject to be turned into a joke in this kind of show.

I do think it was animal cruelty as the fact is they probably did suffer as they were chased round, and then attacked. Rather different to the quick slaughter process of the food that ends up on our table.

It's not a bone of contention, i understand people seeing it differently and respect that. This is just how i felt about it which is individual to me.

Did I miss how the pigeons came to be at the Cannings in the first place? I thought the lady who's husband originally owned Gary's pigeons agreed to keep them and him care for them on her property since Sheila was adamant they wouldn't be staying with her.

I do feel like I've missed a recent episode mind.

I am also slightly bemused at how Terese came to the conclusion that pigeon racing would be an awesome crowd draw to her hotel.

I agree with kitkat and others about the killing of the pigeons. That was bad enough and has finally put the nail in the coffin for me as far as Paul is concerned. He is a lost cause now. But Shiela using them in a pie was just horrible. Who does that in this day and age? She strikes me as someone who would not touch dead game with a bargepole and surely she is not that hard up to have to stoop so low for a bit of food.

That's my take on it anyway.

I am also amazed at Therese and indeed the paying public of Erinsborough putting a pigeon race above a nice new restaurant. Strange indeed.

while i like reading the opinions of others on this board a lot of you seem to take neighbours storylines WAAAAY tooo seriously!! The cat amoung the pigeons scene for example: paul is devious and thought it up after someone used the well worn phrase. Animal cruelty? really? cats are natural predetors so it would have found its way into the pigeon coup at some point. (my cat patiently waited by a hole in the wall for a week for a mouse to appear as he must have sensed it was there)come on lets watch neighbours for what it is - a silly aussie soap which helps us to wyle away the time. Elly is not a real person neither is piper or paige they are characters in a show which at times is not very wwll written but the way some of you are commenting you would think they were YOUR neighbours!!!

Is that not the point of posting on a soap forum though? The same sort of discussions happen about all the soaps, the only thing with Neighbours is that it's largely contained in a single thread.

Posting on here is more entertaining than watching the show at the moment. Go insult the serious folk on one of the EastEnders posts and see what happens. I was inundated with messages from someone when I suggested Jo Joyner should just quit instead of taking so many breaks that it required stupid reasoning from the writers. Then when I said someone should be axed for getting on my wick it started again. You don't get this here. We have a laugh and a whinge and a debate. We aren't stupid - we know it's a silly soap and we have fun picking it apart. Mostly it's the writing and actions of characters. We don't fall out despite having different opinions either. I think we have one of the nicest threads on the forum and it's all self contained for the most part. I still don't like Elly though - horribly written character.

The cat would have got into somebody else's house would it? The pigeons were inside and unlike a cat going after a bird outside, they had nowhere to fly to to escape her. Also, these were pets, not wildlife.

Of course we're not taking it too seriously. We know it's not real, nobody has actually complained to OFCOM or anything. We're not insane or unable to separate fiction from reality - at least I know I'm not and from what i've seen of the other posters, on this thread and others, they aren't either.

It is just entertainment, nobody is expecting Neighbours to be Tolstoy.

But, i don't see the point in watching something, never mind going onto a forum to discuss it afterwards, if i don't apply 'real world' logic to it and take is semi seriously.

So, i know that "no animals were harmed in the filming of this programme", that we were just shown an implied pigeon slaughter, not a real one and that it was intended to be a light hearted story.

However, i don't see why I shouldn't express my opinion that what they were depicting would have been animal cruelty and the characters reactions were quite off given that.

But that is just my take on it.

I have This gut feeling that I know who it would have been about Jo Joyner as i've had similar experiences. If I'm right, they really can't help it as they are Autistic and get very fixated on things so i always give her leeway.

But I agree, some people on the other soap threads really do take things very seriously, getting very insulting just for a differing opinion and carrying it on via private messages.

We are a friendly thread. It's probably my favourite one after the Holby City one.

I 'grew up' involved with Doctor Who fandom. Most are perfectly sane, very intelligent people with a great sense of humour. But Lordy, there are some nutters too and they seem to dominate most online discussions including on here. Take a look on that forum for people taking it too seriously.

As an aside, (sorry off topic) i agree about Jo Joyner - her breaks got ridiculous and she wasn't the only one on EE.

I know who your gut feeling is and I have had messages from her before asking me not to cull characters she likes if I ever get the producers job on EE. I always respond to her and we have a chat. My children are autistic so I understand her and I think being kind to her is important. I've seen her treated quite poorly on here so when she does message me I make sure I speak to her in a way my boys would respond to. I've had nutters too - some EE posters are very serious about the programme. Even some Emmerdale ones had a go after I said a certain plot line was unrealistic. I prefer to stick to where I'm comfortable with people who are genuinely quite witty and sensible. Mostly anyway

where did i say you shouldn't express your opinion? can you just quote the sentence to me? also I am glad you acknowledge that Neighbours is not Tolstoy as I was getting a bit concerned at the level of distress some people have about a cat getting amongst some pigeions (with a little help of course). As you have pointed out you have your opinion and if that is the case then I have mine. I 'watch' neighbours when I am tidying the house, after coming back from my job at the gym so its mind numbness at its best. I don't take it seriously and I am glad you don't - it seems some others do!!!

I have had similar experiences with the same EE poster. She is harmless enough and seems a nice enough lass, so I always exercise a bit of patience with her posts whether in my inbox or on the forums, where I feel sometimes she is unfairly targeted.

Anyway, this thread is one of my favourites. Everyone is nice, discussion is good, attitudes mostly laid back. Also no one poster acts like they own the thread which is something that put me off the Doctors thread I used to be a regular poster on.

If you come unto a thread and make sarcastic remarks about the posters who come on here for a bit of fun to discuss a show they enjoy (or not as is the case quite often) then don't take offence if people stand up for themselves.

We are not stupid or over sensitive but it appears that you can dish it out but seem unable to take it. This is a pleasant thread and you and your views are, of course, welcome but a little sensitivity goes a long way.

So welcome to the thread and I hope you can relax and have fun here because it is all just a bit of fun at the end of the day

If you've come here looking for a row you won't get one. I've never made out I believe the characters to be real people either.

In that case you are a fair and friendly owner lol. Over on the Doctors thread it got to the point some of us were reluctant to post because one poster tried to say what could and couldn't be posted and turned nasty if things weren't going his way. It is crazy how intense some people can get.

You didn't say I shouldn't express my opinion, i was just clarifying that is what i was doing, not that i believed my opinion to be fact.

I also just have it on as pretty much background noise whilst I do other things but as it is not intellectually challenging, it all goes in with only partial attention. I'm hardly sitting in front of it, giving it my full concentration and taking notes as I would do (and have done for television reviews I've been paid to do in the past) if I were presenting a detailed analysis of the subject.

I will go back and check something if it is queried on here (or by a friend/colleague etc) though - that's just the kind of pedantic mind I have - I like to be sure of my facts and when it is just a matter of checking a recording from a couple of days earlier, it is easy enough to do. Not that I want or need to be proved right to other people but I prefer it for my own peace of mind - on any subject in life, serious or trivial, real or fictional.

We're just discussing it with a level of seriousness in the context of the fictional world we watch. Also, sometimes with a view as to what the writers intentions are in presenting certain subjects the way they do.

It is just shorthand to say "i really hate how Piper is being such a brat, Iif she were mine shek5 be grounded" than "I really wish the writers would stop writing the fictional character of Piper as such a brat. Do we think they could write the fictional character of Terese as grounding her as that would be what i would do if my child in real life behaved as the fictional Piper has been written. But i'm not annoyed as i know it isn't real and i'm not taking it seriously" about every observation anybody has.

ETA. I would just say that, intentionally or not (and i know all about unintentionally offending with a post, i know I can come across as something of a know it all or high handed at times and it isn't intentional), it ded seem like you were having a go at the posters taking it 'seriously'. Either doubting their ability to distinguish between fact and fiction or implying that they must be saddoes to be so invested in a silly soap opera.
