BBC 5 Live General Chit Chat (Part 2)
Continuation of: BBC 5 Live General Chit Chat
Someone needs to tell Steve Claridge to clam down on the Monday Football Night programme. Seems to get very offended when somebody tries to disagree with him or thinks a player(s) should take some blame for the poor position of a club. |

If funds allowed surely it would be better for 5Live to be a news-only station in competition with LBC while 5Live Sports Extra could be developed into a full-blown sports station to take on Talksport. Unfortunately, it seems that funds are not available to allow such an arrangement. This afflicts no other station except 5Live. I was able to tune in the Radio2 pop-ups along with main Radio2, for example. I heard years ago that this forum is browsed by the broadcasting professionals, so is there a BBC teccy out there who might consider looking at this as a "matter of interest" project? The main radio affected by this is an Altius DAB+ picked up from Aldi. OK it's a cheapo set, but no other stations are affected in this way. And if we are to have our "digital revolution" then surely we should be looking to have all of our stations working on affordable equipment, not just the "name" brands. |

What the hell went on with astronomer Mark Thompson last night? After Phil Williams introduced him he hardly said anything. I've just settled down to listen to the last hour from last night and he's only on for a couple of minutes, Williams pratting on about West Ham which the BBC had force fed to the nation all night.
It's not the first time he's hardly said anything when on as a guest, I find it rude of the BBC to have someone give up an hour of their time in the evening and then get ignored |

Good news that Ofcom is taking over BBC governance from the trust.
Be much easier to file an impartiality complaint when Nolan and The Bishop gang up on Charlie Wolf on Sunday nights!! They can also stopwatch the time Charlie gets before being interrupted to allow The Bishop to pontificate endlessly. |

Flicking through the radio stations last after midnight, I heard a familiar voice and yes it was Five Lifeless/Local Radio Manchester's very own cleaning guru , the one and only Aggie MacKenzie.
Hard to believe that at that time some years ago, there would be news/ political debate. Now the best you can get is a discussion on how to get red wine stains of your axminster carpet. |

Clare McDonnell must be retained in a regular role; she makes waking up in the morning an absolute delight! She can more than hold her own with Nicky Campbell, and that razor-like wit....far far too good to be a super-sub.

I agree though I did enjoy the nights offerings and they did mention that Claridge had been stuck in traffic for several hours and was a bit techy.

I'd love to make a comment about 5Live's output tonight, but all i'm getting is two lots of " more live sport, pure live sport, this is....."stuck on a loop!
![]() ![]() BBC if you can't sort out the problem with Sports Extra taking over 5Live, at least switch bloody Sports Extra off when it isn't broadcasting any sport please!

Judging on past form, the super-subs usually do end up with a regular slot in the schedule. I remember when Rachel was the super-sub before she ended up on breakfast permanently and she always impressed me whenever she turned up in the schedule to fill in. I would like to see Claire doing the afternoon slot by herself with a similar format to Simon Mayo's show years ago. I'm at work in the afternoon but I'd certainly listen again to that. |

Yes, I like Claire as well. She's very easy to listen to and she's been doing really well filling in for Rachel on the breakfast slot. I manage to listen to about an hour and a half of breakfast every morning.

Rachel Burden: hmm - she's OK but a bit....vanilla? Not really authoritative enough for hard news. Hope her family situation is improving though, poor girl. |

I agree with the comments about Clare McDonnell - she's very good. How about pairing her up with Rachel Burden when Rachel is ready to return and dropping Dame Nicky? Although Clare handles him well, he is more often than not absent on other duties and becoming more insufferable when he is there. Anyone hear his story this morning about wandering into a female sauna by mistake? Pathetic self-preening.

This morning, Caroline Barker announced that The Non League Show would end next Sunday.
She said there are changes afoot, anyone know what they are? |

She said there are changes afoot, anyone know what they are? If it is finished on BBC Radio for good, perhaps the recently-launched talkSPORT 2 could look to launch a weekly non-league football magazine show? They already broadcast very strong Football League magazine programme in Up The League and if they can give a platform to some of The Non-League Show's contributors, then I'm sure much of its audience will follow them and tune in. |

I thought Chris Mason did an excellent job on breakfast. Knows his stuff, got a good personality, ideal really. He worked well with Sam Walker, just as he would with either Rachel or Claire.
If the incumbent ever found himself with more free time at breakfast, I have always favoured Tony Livesey for the job. But I would have to say that Chris Mason would certainly be a contender. Along with Tony, he would be a refreshing change to the norm. |

I am sure 5live will be spending a long time remembering the life of a real sporting (and maybe beyond) icon/legend.
One of the true sporting greats/personalities. |

TBH I am have been more deeply affected by the death of young bike racer Luis Salom yesterday than by that of an old and ailing man (accepted that I have been more affected by Ali's life and achievements).

Fair points - 7 hours is a long time for a tribute programme to one man maybe.
