There seems to be an internal BBC competition as to who can produce the loudest shouty screamy things - both the radio and TV Olympic trailers make me dive for the off switch, and to prove nothing is sacred I turned on the radio this morning and had to hit the volume control during a Radio 4 trail for a play about the Clintons...before the 5.20am shipping forecast!
![]() By the way, has anyone seen the latest Rajar figures for Radio 5 ? |

I was wondering whose idea it was to send Darren Campbell over there for a week before the athletics started ?
Having heard his oafish attempts at the gymnastics, I'm still wondering why. |

I see that Radio Five Live has David Davies covering the Olympics this morning. Whatever convinced them to bring that old fossil back?

Will Gompertz pretending to be 'hip' doing an Arts show?
![]() Must be the poshest voice on 5Live since Fi Glover. And what a wasted opportunity! Instead of covering regional theatre of which there are many and much to talk about, we get crap music played for a dull critic talking about the Mercury Prize. Who gives a toss? Presumably Six Music is talking about that, or all the other music stations BBC has? It should be against the law to have posh voiced numpties pretending to talk about 'Grime', like they know naff all about anything emanating from 'The street'.

Having heard his oafish attempts at the gymnastics, I'm still wondering why. ![]() Ollie Williams is a great, natural radio voice and live commentator. Such a pity he went to live in the Canadian wilderness, so only joins up with the BBC for one off events now. He's still underused though, as he's so much better than many others. I'm already bored rigid with Eleanor Oldroyd's 6th Form, girl guides style of broadcasting. |

I take the point about Eleanor's head girl approach to broadcasting. But that's just Ellie. I don't suppose she has ever had a hangover! But that doesn't make her a bad broadcaster.
In truth, she's a brilliant top class broadcaster, incredibly knowledgeable, great ease of communication and I can listen to her for hours. I have enjoyed the Olympic coverage so far. It all seems very measured and authorative. The weak spot for me is Sonia McLoughlan at the rugby. Again she is very knowledgable, but she starts each game with a high excitement and then finds it vocally hard to go anywhere from there as the game actually does get exciting! The only real weak spot of any of the coverage for me is breakfast. I think Caroline Barker and Nicky aren't well matched. She sounds like his daughter. I know many like Caroline on here and so do I, but I also think a small amount of her goes a long way. Nicky is also getting free reign to be Nicky. Not always a good thing. However, I do have to also agree with earlier posters about the shouty adverts each morning. They didn't bother me till people started to point them out and now they are really starting to get on my nerves. I'd also like to hear just a bit more news during the day. That said, it's been great so far and the next best thing to being there. It really is very impressive. |

BBC TV do a fantastic job covering the games with a dozen live streams available at times. Seems a pity radio is restricted to just one channel. To add insult to injury there's someone at the BBC who think that coverage of a womens cricket match is worthy of licence fee money. A nonsense tournament that no other media company thinks worthy of touching with a barge pole, just the PC BBC agenda.

Are Sky showing it as they like to promote ladies sport too.
Agreed it's going to be as popular as a Brit/British competing in the Olympics going for a medal. |

Actually, so a bit of research and you'll find that the ECB didn't offer ball by ball to Sky or anyone else, because they wanted to get the product right first. I'm sure Sky, who show almost all the England Women's games, would have been most interested. |

For me it's not a patch on past year's major event coverage. Neither the commentators nor presenters are of the same standard, save for a few. Too much inane, inconsequential chatter just filling airspace. Apart from Campbell, the swimming guy from Cheshire, is equally irritating. The other night Russell Fuller held an interminable discussion about Phelps with 2 American journos. I couldn't have cared less about the minutiae of this man's life. *Yawn*. Re the shouty trailers, the worst has got to be Connor MacNamara.

Women's Sport
BBC TV and Radio's stated aim to broadcast more Women's Sport just means aping Men's Sport, so we get Women's Football, Rugby, Cricket, Golf etc.
How about even reporting the results of women competing in other sports, eg. Figure Skating, which gets zero mention on 5Live. How often do I see a Torvill and Dean interview where a numpty like Tim Lovejoy, who has done no research, says to T&D: "Oh, when do you think we'll ever win medals again in Skating?". We have! Over the past decade GB has won 3 Bronze medals in Ice Dance at the European Championships. Just imagine if our Footballers finished 3rd in a Euro Championship, the coverage would be never ending, as it was with Wales recently. All I'm asking is for skaters results to even be mentioned on the sports bulletin, but no! And they claim to cover women in sport? *Roll eyes* |

I agree re Sonia McLaughlin. I find her very shrill and irritating, and she never shuts up. Yes, it's radio, but you don't need to talk continuously. Allow people listening to sample the atmosphere.

Re the shouty trailers, the worst has got to be Connor MacNamara. ![]() I think a lot of the things you talk about stem from a lot of contributors seeing this as being where they really have to get everything they have into the output becuase they would rather like some more work. A prime example of this is the new sports lad Chris Latchem. I'm all for bright and lively, but this morning at the football he was too quick to interject with inane comments. They get in the way of the interviews. I get the impression he just wants to be noticed! George has far more authority and restraint, but then again, probably has a lot more experience. That said, I am being a bit picky because I am really enjoying it. |

Just allow the few dozen saps dumb enough to turn up at grounds to see what an inferior product it is. |

Anyone else hear Nicky almost rubbing his guest the wrong way on 'Your call' this morning. Was a little awkward I must say.

Most of the shedule is made up from the Olympics, I don't mind but would it be better putting the coverage on the 5 Live sports extra channel and keep the usual programing on 5 Live.

I just wish we didn't have this 'gross overkill' with sport all the time

I agree, I'm having to resort to podcasts to get something of a 'normal feel' to my listening.

It's the biggest sporting event in the world and it happens once every four years. Don't worry, you'll have brett, dotun and the rest back in a couple of weeks and us licence payers who are sports fans will have to suffer the drivel you enjoy.

Maybe you should tune into Talksport and Talksport2 if sport is your thing.
Also, the remit for Sports Extra as set out is for "overspill" and "Clashes". It's not to replace live sport on 5Live and never has been, it's also used for TMS right now as example of a clash. As people have already pointed out, this is probably the biggest sporting event in the world, once every 4 years. 5Live is a News & Sports station so it's you know, covering sport. News is provided in bulletins and in the mornings, plus there's other BBC stations & indeed other mediums to access the news for a 2 week period, it's not exactly difficult! If anything big happened, 5Live would be covering it & there are numerous examples of news items replacing planned live sports coverage over the years. |
