I never last more than 10 mins nowadays if they're discussing sport on Radio 5. There's bound to be a full volume screamer during that time !

I actually felt the opposite about those comments, and perhaps the over-fulsome praise hinted at exactly the point you make, that making room for a block of sport in an otherwise news-based show is a bit out of place. I wonder how long before an item of significant 'breaking news' leads to the slot being bounced.
I'm sure 5Live would love to run their own version of a 'Sporting Breakfast' over on Sports Extra, but the current remit and budget wouldn't allow that. Maybe this is a toe-in-the-water to test audience reaction?

Nothing wrong with a short sport feature on a live News & SPORT station but yes it would get dropped if there was an actual breaking news story

But that's the point. It isn't a short feature. It's a whole fifteen minutes long. I have no problem with Lawro's predictions or a former pro or and commentators assessing what happened or is about to happen. A good mix of news and sport is exactly what we turn up for.

But this is a segment chucked into the middle of a news programme. It has the feel of endless talking over what happned over the past 72 hours when nothing much has changed from the last time we talked about it (and will talk about further at 7 that evening.) Also, the standard of guests does not fit the billing. To me, this fills fifteen minutes where they don't have to with anything else and it also has the feel of costing very little in these times of financial strain.

I love football, I love sport, but this is just a silly idea that has no place on a Monday morning.

I think a Monday morning is precisely the right time to have such a feature. If you go into many workplaces on a Monday morning, you will find people discussing the weekend's sporting action, so 5Live is just following a social trend.

I understand concerns that 15 minutes is a long segment, but I'm sure that it would be ditched if there was an important event which required treatment. We've seen that happen in the past.

In any case, these 'features' don't tend to have a very long shelf life, so those people who dislike it will probably find that it will disappear again after a few months. I doubt it will last longer than the present football season at most.

You make a good point. Perhaps I would like it more if the guests were a bit more opinionated. Maybe I would like it better too if the presenters conducted the conversation. I think George is a great sports broadcaster, but it just feels wrong that the two presenters disappear for fiteen minutes and hand the programme over to him. Maybe I should give it more time, but all in all, at the moment, it feels like a bad idea badly executed.

Why does Campbell put more than one caller on air in the 9am phone in and allow them to drone on interminably?

On this morning's phone in re Trump, 2 male callers, one pro, one against (naturally, this is the BBC) just talked back and forth like 2 old men on a bus, going round and round in circles, repeating the same things, whilst Campbell sat by, presumably drinking tea, and thinking this was an exercise in democracy, when it was only boring radio.

For me, the 9am phone in is very badly handled, and requires a complete overhaul.

The phone in is a total fake. Same callers often under different names. Campbell lies when he says that the BBC don't select the callers. They do. If you've ever texted the station you will sometimes get a phone call back asking if you'd go on air. That is THEM selecting the callers yet they refuse to own up to that.

I agree that when they get 2 or 3 callers on at the same time it is pointless, they often end up shouting at each other or talking over each other.

I would rather have guest speakers with perhaps questions emailed or texted in. Some callers just end up repeating the same point over and over yet don't get cut off.

I agree the phone in needs completely overhauling, preferably with a new presenter. Campbell constantly interrupts, but then there are awful pauses when a caller has spoken and nothing happens. Presumably he wasn't concentrating and doesn't know what to say next. It's a mess when several callers are all on line at the same time. I expect he thinks it's edgy broadcasting.

I used to enjoy the Friday Night weekend preview. It passed an entertaining couple of hours until anything decent came on telly at prime time

But it's gone.......

We've now got The Friday Night Social........groan.......by 'Social' they mean phone-in

I hate to sound elitist (well, I don't really.....) but I couldn't give a toss what ordinary people or 'the fans' think........and I refuse to listen to phone ins. I particularly refuse to listen to phone-ins when they call them Socials

Probably some truth to make if you've got a worthwhile point to make and just send a text in although given how long callers have to wait doubt it's very often.

I hate it when Campbell says to one caller " Say Hello to X " (The second caller. ) These 2 people will have opposing views & seem startled to have suddenly been asked to argue with each other when that's not why they rang up

The other day also there was a serious subject & at the end of the interview NC said " I though that warranted an interview that wasn't shouty or interrupted "

I've really been enjoying Nicky and Claire McDonell on breakfast recently. I hope she keeps the slot and they find somewhere else for Rachel Burden to go.

If Radio 5 Live's Friday night football preview isn't to your taste, there's a couple of very strong alternatives.

I've never listened to 5 Live's Monday and Friday night football discussion programmes as a point of principle - I don't agree with how they routinely prioritise mostly Premier League-based chat to commentaries on those nights' Championship games when they are the Football League's primary national radio rights holders, only to clear the decks for commentaries on occasions when it is a top flight match taking place that night.

Personally, I highly rate talkSPORT's Friday night preview show The Player's Lounge. It's hosted by Matt Holland, who has turned his hand from playing to punditry to being a lead anchor expertly and is one of the best former professional players turned media men around in my opinion, and contains proper, detailed previews to the weekend's Premier League, Football League and European action. I know some 5 Live listeners turn their nose up at anything talkSPORT, but from my point of view it's arguably the best show that station has to offer and among the best on sports radio full stop.

Alternatively, I really enjoy Radio 5 Live Sports Extra's simulcasts of BBC Local Radio commentaries on the Friday night Football League games when they are able to carry them. This Friday just gone, they simulcast BBC Radio Derby's coverage on the Burton v Derby match, which was an entertaining listen.

Either option is in my view a much stronger suit than one of Radio 5 Live's "Football Socials" on the basis of what I've heard of such shows in the past.

Peter Allan is a legend and better than most the young broadcasters on 5Live. He and Jane Garvey are brilliant together. At last we'll get some intelligent broadcasting. I just hope I can get to listen on a Sunday night.

I wish Emma Barnett was taking over every morning, instead of Adrian Chiles who sounds totally incompetent and about to fall asleep at any moment.

Sorry to bang on about it, but has anyone from the "Department of Noisy Trailers" ever stopped to think in what circumstances people are listening to the station? On the current F1 trail, the last part is Lewis Hamilton's radio conversation with his team - unless you're listening very carefully it's hard to work out what he says, and if you've got Five Live on as background or while doing something else, as many people do, it's just a mess of noise. That portion could be edited off the end in seconds and the message would still be the same...rant over...

I reckon their nighttimes are due for a change now they've made changes in the day. I've noticed that new voices are being used with on the overnight & late shows when the normal ones are off. Crissa Chadderton, Duncan Barks & someone called Tom. I wonder if they're in line for something when they change nights. All of the current presenters have been there years so maybe a change next year?

Dotun the Charlton and Muswell Hill Punk/Teddy Boy/New Wave/Swedish folk fan will survive.
