I agree it's the graveyard shift but that applies to every other night at the same time. Admittedly there's probably less to report on in the early hours of Sunday morning but for many years 5 Live were able to carry normal programming on UAN on a Sunday morning without having to resort to playing snippets of music.

You're not being fair at all. I think you underestimate how important Overnight programming is to a station's audience, and people do actually listen at that time, rather than just have it on as noise in the background or in the car.

I would ditch Dotan totally - dreadful broadcaster. I remember when he called the rioting of 2011 "an uprising" and had to rapidly backtrack and apologise.
He always wants to take a contrary view when interviewing correspondents too. And he's so full of his own importance, I remember when he boasted about formerly living in Sweden and speaking the language, and he said something to a Swedish person down the line, and they had no clue what he was saying! Deeply embarrassing.

Here comes the Olympics and Paralympics athletes droning on on what they achieved. Who cares stop milking it a bunch of SELLOUT's. About time 5live move on and talk important issues not just sport, otherwise this station will end up like talkSPORT. Agreed Nihal is not a 5live type presenter he needs to be on some tin pot local commercial radio station not 5live. RANT OVER.

5Live needs to ditch the 6.30pm slot where they spend half an hour looking at one issue - its some of the most boring radio known to man. Today they spent 30 minutes discussing fly tipping. I rapidly changed stations.

The 'Virtual Jukebox' podcast of 10 days ago (11 September) was dedicated to Ska and Rocksteady music in honour of Prince Buster, who had died a few days before. There were some interesting discussions, and good records being played imho. It is not often one hears 'Bad manners' on the radio.

I have no problem with Dotun, but I really dislike the Virtual Jukebox. If I wanted music I would go to another station. I suppose the cost cutting exercises we read about must have some say in why we have features like this. I think the same could be said of Phil Williams after midnight features, his Tuesday interviews and the proliferation of 15 or 30 minutes discussions about football. I accept it may be "needs must" for these speech items, but a musical item that feels like it lasts forever and is just a rambling mess needs consigning to to the virtual dustbin.

However, I don't mind the 6.30 half hour, at least it is a topical discussion...but I am a massive fan of Drive which I believe is he kind of programme Five Live should be bradcasting throught the day.

I too am starting to get sick of hearing about our Olympic and Paralympic achievements. This is the time to say "well done everybody" and move on.

Finally, it does seem to be a bit harsh to have a go at Nihal on his first full day in the job. Let's see what happens and how the programme develops. Though on the evidence of day one I fear the worst!

Coming late to this thread, as someone whose bathroom radio is always tuned to 5 Live...

My main gripe is a trivial one, but which drives me mad. At the end of every 5 Live Football Daily podcast, they play a montage of clips which is from three seasons ago now, featuring such gems as "trademark Peter Crouch", who has barely kicked a ball for Stoke City in the past two seasons, and "Dzeko scores yet again" - a player who is now a distant memory in the Premier League, even for Man City fans. They obviously just stick it on the end of every podcast without thinking about it or anyone listening to it, but we had this montage throughout the whole of last season at the beginning AND end of every podcast, and I'm sick to death of it, especially if I can't get to my iPhone quick enough to press the +15 seconds button. Are we really going to have this for the whole of this season? At least they've cut out the last line now: "Chelsea are champions." If they have to have a montage, surely someone can spend half an hour knocking together something a lot more current.

And while I'm mouthing off, I agree about Dotun Adebayo - embarrassing and amateurish. When he was guest presenting on Afternoon Edition, I nearly crashed the car cringing at some of his questions. That man strikes the wrong note more often than Florence Foster Jenkins...

I might agree if Five Live Extra was on the MW/AM band or even VHF/FM. But it isn't. So I can't listen to it on my portable, many others I suspect are likewise. Not interested in battery draining/weaker reception DAB on a portable, again like many others. So no.

Anyway, live sport is just live news or events of a particular variety, so both fit reasonably well on the same station, and there will be no split for cost reasons alone.

Like sayng all sports should be on Sky only..

I was cringing listening to Drive yesterday afternoon.
Tony Livesey was interviewing the LibDem Health Spokesman Norman Lamb. He (Livesey) suddenly launched into a bizzare rant about "the will of Labour voters" and their attitude towards the LibDems.

Norman Lamb thanked Livesey - with heavy sarcasm - for his Political "analysis". I don't recall that ever happening when Peter Allen was presenting Drive?

I don't understand what the BBC are doing here. This is (flagship) News radio for people who are commuting. When they were choosing a presenter for Drive, what gave them the idea that the 5th act on the bill at the Comedy Store in Manchester could be in any way vaguely suitable??

Yes but Tony Livesey is wonderful ( or so he thinks ) personally it doesn't surprise me that he used to work for the Sunday Sport or whatever !

Heard Nihal when he did overnights covering for Rhod Sharp, and found him meh! Then there was his recent stint at the Olympics and I didn't warm to him any further. How many more presenters are 5 Live going to get through on that afternoon slot? ,

After Richard Bacon left, that show has been a real problem area. Even though he was something of an ego-tripper Bacon was much better than any presenter used since, Why use 2 mediocre presenters when one decent one will suffice?

Eamonn Holmes (days before Danny Baker?), Fighting Talk, then sport all afternoon and most of the night and Stephen Nolan, but look at Sat night / Sun morning's Up All Night. The Film Phone In. When did the Virtual Jukebox start?

He was the Editor! And used to appear on TV sometimes being interviewed about certain salacious stories in his rag. I couldn't believe it when he joined 5 Live, though I gather he did some sports news on BBC Look North or similar in between.
This programme does not work for me with either presenter. I can't stand his co host, and although I don't mind Livesey, he is not a news presenter. Though whenever I listen, it's all about the text topics of a light-hearted variety, which don't fit with news IMO. Weekend Breakfast is the same.

I only heard the final hour of Emma's show. She has improved slightly since her LBC days, but she was promoting "new contributors" and the Buzz feed woman, with "Westminster Whispers" sounded like she'd gone to McDonald's with her 6th form. If she is going to be bringing "political insight" every week, then I don't have much hope.
