It did. Changed a few weeks back. I listen to it via the podcast which serves up Dr Karl as well as The Naked Scientist.

Thank you. I thought I was going mad.

I do like Dr Karl, as well as the Gadget Detective when he is on.

Something that has been creeping up on me for some time and has now hit me in the face and turned into a full blown annoyance -

listening to football commentary on 5Live it is incredibly annoying how often they mention the next game or the game after that or the game after that that they will have commentary on

Today they seemed to spend the whole of the Man City game telling we could listen to the Man Utd game on Monday on 5Live together with reminding us of Sunday's live matches every few minutes.

Obviously this is a result of more stations now having rights to broadcast live commentary.......they seem to be so scared that we might listen to a match on Talksport that they have to plug their own matches every two minutes but it is getting incredibly annoying

(On TV it's the same on BT Sport)

For God's sake.......commentate on the match that's on now.......

Pienaar really is a hopeless interviewer - Salmond is just getting a free party political broadcast at the moment.

with regards to national radio LESS stations have the commentary rights in the latest franchise round. Absolute radio dropped out at the end of last season. but lets be honest here, a commentary game on Talk Shite is a million times worse than the BBC with the endless plugs. bookie adds etc............

At least we don't have to put up with Collymore or clutter in our gutters any more!

He's been interviewed on 5 Live, so that could lead to him doing more work for the station.

Actually Talksport has Jim Proudfoot who is easily the best commentator on radio. No nonsense just calls the game. Surprised the BBC don't try and nick him.

I agree. Jim Proudfoot is a superb commentator, probably my favourite on either TV and radio. He does well wherever he broadcasts.

As 5Live hasn't had a Listeners POV show for the past 2 decades, it's been left to Radio 4 Feedback to provide this service.

Today Controller Jonathan Wall was on answering a wide array of Listener's questions.
The final section here, starts around 18 min.

http://bbc.in/2dZ0WT1

Apparently he considers Sarah Brett "a discovery".

You can hear why he is in BBC Management, he has the BBCspeak down pat.

Sadly, I don't see much prospect of the station improving under his decision making.
Totally agree - the station has been in terminal decline during the day for a number of years under Wall and the previous controller. Quite simply the failure to bring in much needed quality replacement presenters is coming home to roost - the likes of Sam Walker, Anna Foster, Sarah Brett, Emma Barnett, Nihal, Chris Warburton have been cheap replacements for the likes of Shelagh Foggarty, Peter Allen, Simon Mayo, Dan Walker...... Worse still there are better ones waiting in the wings that could do far more like Caroline Barker, Claire McDonnell, Eleanor Oldroyd, George Riley, Will Perry, Colin Murray who would do a far better job as daytime presenters than the substandard ones above.
Luckily the sports department seems to be allowed to plough its own furrow and continues to carry on unaffected when all around it falls apart.

Don't you think a daytime slot for the Gadget Detective in the afternoon would be a great idea, to answer tech queries? I'd much rather hear him than yet another guest promoting a book. The only trouble is, Nihal would keep interrupting.

Started off on Capital Gold Sport, along with Steve Wilson (and ofcourse JP, Jonathan Pearce).

My fave radio Football Commentator is BBC London's Nick Godwin.

I couldn't agree more, I hardly listen at all now, it's gone downhill rapidly in the last few years !

It was always likely to happen, once the station moved north. Eventually, as more established presenters moved on, there would come a point where 5 Live would start to have problems attracting high quality replacements unless those replacements were already northern based.

Yes I thought at the time that would happen , however I remember the then Controller of Radio 5 saying they'd have no trouble finding top class presenters to work in Manchester

Pienaar isn't nearly as good as he once was, Chris Mason is so much better .

Is anyone else being driven mad by the new jingles? I have been singing "Wichita Lineman" for the last few days and couldn't understand why (I don't even like it) but I have tracked it down to the last few notes of the jingle played on the hour. SO irritating!

Controversial pundit Stan Collymore is making a surprise return to BBC this Saturday on the flagship football phone-in show 606.
Collymore, whose contract with talkSport was not renewed after Euro 2016, is standing in for Robbie Savage, who will be working on BT Sport’s coverage of Liverpool v West Brom.
There is no doubting Collymore’s talent as a hardworking analyst who will attract listeners but there are no plans for Collymore to join the BBC on a more regular basis.

Hope he's not as shouty as he was on TS as he makes interesting points

Mind you, anyone will be an upgrade on the current incumbent

I still miss the previous Up All Night music, the one with the saxophone! That was replaced with the current music bed back in the early 2000s...

There were moments in the Jeremy Paxman interview yesterday afternoon with Sarah Brett, where it was like listening to the Duke of Edinburgh's interview with Fiona Bruce of a few years ago. He actually said to Brett at one point: "What a stupid question!"

Why has 5 Live's cycling magazine show been scheduled to clash with the track cycling tomorrow?
