I'm not sure why Afternoon Edition are spending an hour on gun crime in Chicago today , is this in the News over here.
Followed by Jeanette Winterton talking about her new book. I switched stations at 1.20pm , no more Radio 5 today for me ! It is true Afternoon Edition does interview Authors, Actors Singers etc. Unfortunately as has been noted in the past these people won't appear unless they have something to plug. Newspapers do the same. As for Feminism the BBC is doing a lot of features about Women in the 21st century. I would expect 5 live to be part of that. |

Exactly. Self generated feminist nonsense. The top news headline throughout Drive was the fact that more women participate in sport each week than previously. Do me a favour 5live.

5 live gets criticised for being dull and predictable but when.they do something different they get critisised. They can't win. I only heard breakfast but I thought it sounded fine. |

Well if the are the anti Breixt station people say they are the Beeb probably didn't want to talk about the real top news story too much!
I noticed 5live had live football last Friday - was that just because it was Newcastle? |

It's almost 2017, and so it's time to look forward to what may or may not be the news headlines from BBC Five Live next year.
January Five Live decide to promote their weekday programmes using key presenters. 500 roadside posters go up around the country showing pictures of Adrian Chiles under the headline "Snooze with the news!" February Its awards time again. One Five Live winner is Chris Sutton who picks up the "Ken Clarke Award For Unplanned Broadcasts." The judges recognised that Sutton has now gone several football seasons without realising that what he says near a microphone can actually be heard by millions. March Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode are praised by BBC accountants who say that, in these cost cutting times, they admire the duo's skill of making a ten minute feature into a two hour programme. April Five Live announces the death of Mr. Arthur Penge from Plumbing in the Hole, Somerset. Following the traditions set in 2016, Five Live plunges into a seven hour long Arthur Night in which people who have never met Arthur, people who couldn't pick him out of a line up and people who couldn't even spell his name are asked for their tributes to the great man. Five Live say the heartfelt comments are from a representative sample of people who were in when the researcher called. May Following the recent successes of their many themed days, which see presenters scattered across the country to reflect a common issue or story, Five Live say they are anxious to challenge themselves to even greater technological and production heights. They embark on their single greatest challenge which is to offer a full day's programmes presented by people who can be arsed going to Salford. June Bishop Stephen Lowe's celebrity status is recognised as he is asked to model a newly designed cassock that is both stylish and modern. Bishop Stephen's personalised garment is a simple creation that reaches to ankle level at the front but is arch shaped the rear so The Bishop can be more clearly heard. July Aid agencies say they are now better prepared to deal with any migrant crisis that may materialise this summer in Europe. Last year, they struggled to cope as the continent was almost overwhelmed by numbers far greater than those fleeing from Syria in 2015. The new migrants largely gathered in France and claimed to be vital to Five Live's coverage of the Euro 2016 championships. A similar situation developed later in the year in Rio. August The producers of Wake Up To Money say they're considering dropping the invitation for listeners to text them whilst the programme is on air. This follows criticism that the text subjects bore little resemblance to the radio items being discussed. Many claimed they were trivial and irrelevant. For instance, the Marks and Spencer's annual sales figures were paired with the text question "Which Michael would you make a saint?" During an item on the way Brexit will hit holiday businesses in Ibiza, the programme wondered "Have you ever been face down in the gutter?" And on Christmas sales predictions they enquired if listeners "knew anyone who wears red and has a white beard?" September It's the start of the academic year. Following his award of a honorary degree, Nicky Campbell is bestowed yet another citation from Aberdeen University. The Scottish icon, who some believe conducts lengthy indulgent interviews crafted to illustrate his intellectual prowess, is invited to join the University's history faculty in recognition that it takes him an age to ask a question. October Five Live are cleared of any wrong doing by an inquiry set up to assess how Stephen Nolan was trapped in a Salford studio. The unfortunate incident was widely reported in the press and on social media. Some medium wave listeners complained to Five Live when the station also denied they had been hoodwinked by a publicity stunt. November The nominations are announced for the Sports Personality of the Year. The list supports Five Live's policy of giving prominence to politically correct sports which have fewer people watching than playing. The eventual winners are the Ashby De La Zouch with Newbold Coleorton Male and Female Over 16s cheerleading team. The result is hailed as a victory for the little guys, but the radio schedules are thrown into confusion when the winners speech begins with the phrase "Give us an A....." December The Five Live Christmas annual is snapped up in bookstores. In a bumper edition, there's loads of fun for all the family. One section has the Livesey Line. Readers are given a page full of sayings and phrases with the winner being the person who can convert any topic into the word Burnley using the fewest number of moves. For the Naked Science Wall, readers are faced with an 8 x 8 grid. Each square contains what look like random words. As with the Five Live Science programme, all the words are there, but the winner is the first person to spot a meaningful sentence. However, many readers' struggle with a dot to dot feature. The instruction is that by joining the dots you can reveal a drawing of a well known ex Welsh international footballer who is a regular Five Live pundit. Several readers complain that no matter which way they joined the dots, they simply couldn't make a broadcaster out of Robbie Savage. |
