Steve is right about the point I am making about 5 Live's news coverage. It isn't anything to do with where the stories took place. If there wasn't any major sport after the Orlando terrorist attack, but there was a lot of major sport after the Paris terrorist attacks, the Orlando terrorist attack would have received the most coverage.
There is money to send presenters to France but not money to send commentators to all matches. I would rather it was the other way round. |

George Riley's a sports reporter so should be there. Nicky does the French stories and Clare does the rest.
Can't see a problem |

I have no objection to the BBC sending someone to France to bring the 5Live audience a flavour of the atmosphere during the Euros. But do we need both Nicky and George there? Listening to them between 7 and 9 each morning, all their items seem to be live and between 9 and 10 Nicky continues to do Your Call as he would from Salford.
So, what are they doing for the rest of the day? If they are recording interviews for the following day, none of them seem to have made it to air so far. From what's been broadcast so far, I'd suggest that one reporter would have been sufficient. |

From what's been broadcast so far, I'd suggest that one reporter would have been sufficient. I remember Reilly was doing on the scene reports from the cricket a while back. After an exciting afternoon's play with wickets' tumbling, he came on the next morning and said he was bored, went for a jog and had missed everything ! This morning Nicky Campbell said he'd given away "his" ticket for the Wales v England game ! It's not always bad - the best on the scene breakfast shows they've done were at the Olympics 2012 - really captured the atmosphere. |

They cut away from an important Obama press conference to broadcast some Icelandic fans singing.

Do not confuse importance with time-critical. I doubt it matters a jot if you to have to wait a while to learn what the dead president walking has to say.

Firstly, the Nicky in France debate....I think the problem is it sounds like a jolly! The point being made about George being a sports reporter and Nicky doing the french stories is probably a good one and fair comment. However, on the radio they sound like two lads having a good time at the Euro's, and in many ways, that's how you would want it to sound. It just goes a bit against the grain in Nicky's case because the wider picture is that he has the capacity to irritate (and for my money he is in full irritation flow at the minute) but that should not take away from the probable truth that he is there for a valid reason.
Secondly, the reaction to the death of Mohammed Ali was well over the top. Seven hours non stop was plain ridiculous. There should have been a lot of coverage, but it was excessive even by Nolan's standards. It became ridiculous and counter productive. That said, the coverage of the funeral was proportionate and I thought Adrian Chiles and Mike Costello did a great job. Once Nolan arrived and extended it by three hours...it then became too much. But that's Nolan, he simply doesn't know when to stop. Thirdly, I think the proposed changes will be relatively good. I rate Emma very highly and look forward to hearing her. I think she will be a breath of fresh air. Great to see Jane and Peter together again, but it should be at a more accessible time...even if it was from 2200 on the Sunday. I don't get Nihal, but let's give the lad as chance And finally, lay off Livesey! I love listening to him and Anna. That's my rant over! Next person please........ |

Trouble is they've got Nolan hanging around the studio from early on saturday and sunday evening (except when the useless lump gets lost out walking) so he can be put on air at short notice with his faux sincerity and gravitas and pad out as many hours as needed.

If ANYONE can tell me how flying out presenters to any event adds to the story then I am all ears. Mirie and Maitlis are currently in Florida and no doubt half of five live will be In Rio. The BBC claims to have no cash but sends people here there and everywhere at the drop of a hat. The BBC have sent 250 people to France for the Euros. MASSIVE OVERKILL |

If your problem is the style of coverage, that is to say people being in situ rather than a studio, then fine. That is a fair point of view, but not one shared by pretty much any broadcaster of note. |

Can't understand why a news and sports station don't run a current affairs phone in after midnight (thursdays apart). As I'm listening now we have a caller phoning in about a fault with a fuel filter on his 2002 Corsa with Brian the mechanic giving no doubt useful advice. Other nights we have a lady giving us cleaning advice, a gardening expert and a sleep specialist.
It's 1980's BBC local radio rubbish. |

It's 1980's BBC local radio rubbish. I genuinely believe Jonathan Wall hardly listens to certain shows, and is satisfied with providing a substandard non Sport output for most of the time on the station. 5Live's coverage of the EU Referendum has been dismal and completely uninformed. |

Am I right in saying there used to be a phone in (or at least a partial phone in) on Five Live between 10pm and 1am?
I remember back in the days of Anita Anand, she was interactive as I managed to get a few texts read out on her show. |

I think more calls were taken than are now.
This morning's broadcast from Oswestry was vveryy interesting. We don't hear much about border towns between England and Wales, compared to the border between England and Scotland. |

5 Live's coverage of the murder of Jo Cox MP has been minimal. The press conference where her death was announced wasn't even broadcast. Barack Obama's press conference about the terrorist attack in Florida was at least partially broadcast earlier this week, but that wasn't a press conference to announce anything as significant as people dying.
The murder of an MP as she was doing her work must not get in the way of live football commentary. Thank God for LBC. |

How many should they send? Who would be the ones you don't send that they have sent? Interested in knowing how you'd reduce it to make any significant cuts without altering the quality or location of the broadcast.

I wasn't listening to 5 Live but it is basically a sports station these days, with sport and especially football taking precedence over everything now.

OK Ill have a go Its difficult to second guess production team numbers but Ill suggest each "team" has a production team in each base. News, sport, radio and lets not forget the BBC breakfast crew. The radio reporters could quite easily double up on the news channel freeing some staff to replace the news reporters. would also suggest some presenters out there are not required. Nugent, Gornall and of course Campbell. I would suggest I could get that number down under 200 reasonably comfortably...
And finally, given the BBC is microscopically scrutinized by everyone from the Daily Mail to Exchange and Mart...don't you think they may well have considered every possible option to stop people from finishing the "BBC staff on Euro jolly..." headline they will have already written before the tournament starts. You appear to be advocating a working environment that would get you before a House of Commons select committee. |

Probably not the great time to be a listener if your not a sports fan. |
