I think 5 Live has enough presenters and reporters who have good political knowledge. I don't see the need for more political shows. How would they be different to what is already on the station?
But we end up with Sarah Brett and Colin Paterson the afternoon our next PM is revealed.

If Iain Dale was recruited they wouldn't put him in that slot. I don't see the need for two presenters. Sarah Brett should be able to do the show on her own. It's about time something was done about her voice.

And what do you suggest? Removing her larynx?

I wonder if the station will recruit Stan Collymore now he's been let go by TalkSPORT?

I must say I find the Saturday 6-0-6 with Savage a total turn off.

The reason 5 live has fallen behind LBC, Talksport and will probably lose out to the new TalkRadio is because 5 live is so bloody safe. It used to be a bit more out there and interesting, total crap now. Used to have it on nearly every day going back 5 or 6 years but it's badly lost it's touch.

Only show worth listening to is Up All Night at the moment.

I agree let Collymore do 6-0-6 but keep that Collin Murray away from any radio station now that the lefty boy as decided to leave because of the TS sale.

Please keep Stan Collymore away from Five Live. He was well suited to talkSPORT.

Please keep Stan Collymore away from Five Live. He was well suited to talkSPORT.
He was Radio 5 Live's number one co-commentator when he left the station at the end of the 2007/08 season, when he covered that year's Champions League Final and had been scheduled to cover the Euro 2008 Final prior to his departure. 5 Live offered him a return to the station in 2010 and now the station's controller Jonathan Wall is speaking warmly about him on Twitter. So I'm afraid I don't think you'll be getting your wish.

As for him being "well suited to talkSPORT" - I know from your previous messages that is meant as a swipe at them, but his co-commentaries and phone-ins helped to deliver that station its record highest audience levels on weekend afternoons and he was a major part of the reason why talkSPORT has narrowed the ratings gap between themselves and 5 Live over the past eight years. So yes, he was well suited to talkSPORT given the success he brought to them, and I think he'll prove to be an asset to 5 Live in the way the bosses there evidently view him.

Don't get me wrong. I think he was well suited to talkSPORT even if he isn't my taste. That is not a criticism of SC. It is possible that Jonathan Wall may bring back SC to 5 Live but there are an awful lot of pundits there already. I think that losing SC will be detrimental to talkSPORT although your suggestion of Ray Houghton joining talkSPORT might actually be good. I could just about take SC back on BBC Radio but not Colin Murray. To be fair I never heard him on talkSPORT but he was ghastly (in my opinion) on BBC TV and Radio.
I don't swipe at talkSPORT. I occasionally listen to talkSPORT2 on DAB because it has an eclectic mix of sport. I am not particularly a fan of talkSPORT but that is fair. Like BBC Radio One it is not aimed at my generation.

Fair enough. With Ray Houghton, he wouldn't be joining talkSPORT as such as he's actually been on their roster of co-commentators and pundits for the past 15 years, but I feel that he's probably among those currently there who are best placed to step up and take on some of Stan's workload. That being said, given NewsCorp's takeover and it's links with The Sun and thus Hillsborough, perhaps Ray will be among the next to depart talkSPORT? I doubt Stan and Colin will be the only people to leave talkSPORT should the takeover go through.

Big fan of Stan Collymores commentaries, less so of his phone in but his phone in was/is miles better than anything 606 have done over the last ten years.

I put my radio on today looking for political news from BBC 5 Live because of positive comments on this thread and I just got tennis so I went back to LBC and am still there and will be for the rest of the day.....
At least that was for live sport. Very surprised that 5 live sport started at 7.00 tonight when its all previews.

He's very convivial with other station's presenters on Twitter, including LBC, so that's not a guarantee he'll sign Stan. He was also praising Savage to the skies like a fanboy during the Euros, so that's not a good sign.

That 'CHRIS HOYYY' Olympic's coverage trailer is making my ears bleed. Every sodding hour it blares out.

Snap! Add it to the Formula 1 trailer and infact ALL shouty sport trailers on 5Live. They're all whacked up in volume to MAX so sound like TalkSPORT or any commercial station with Ads blaring. Why the hell do they do it? So annoying and so repetitive.

I always need to tune into R5SX with the volume way down while waiting for the rolling trailer to turn into the start of TMS / F1 then turn the volume up again.

I tell you what is freaking me out...

I was listening last night and don't know who was on possibly Phil Williams?

Anyway he is sounding just like Josh Widdicome with his jowly talk and delivery.

I am not kidding and he is not the only one!

Others have picked up on his style as well, they are all at it!

On Stan Collymore, I think it is inevitable that he will end up on 5 Live. He won't be as free as he has been on TalkSport. I think it is more likely that he'll replace Ian Wright on 606.

The cycling commentary will be even louder this year.

this is annoying me and I haven't turned over to the Cricket coverage to see if they are doing the same (cant imagine they are as it BBB) but.......

Why are they interrupting the golf coverage for such long sections telling us about the Test match. I can see that they would want to update listeners on the score, but why do we need the extra conversation with Alison Mitchell and a pundit.

The cricket is on LW as well as SPORTS EXTRA so there are plenty of places to get more in depth updates....I would cut these sections right back.

Its Golf's turn this week. Cricket already has its place

That would be an excellent swop just need to transfer Savage and Kelly Cates as well..........

Was going to post what a professional job Phil Williams did last night as the horrific attack in Nice was breaking.

But astonishingly they've sent clueless Nolan there live tonight....... just as a military coup is taking place in Turkey. Bad decision. Atrocious mangling of names, places, constant interruption of guests for no reason to sound incredulous as Nolan does.

How does this man get on air? He does NO RESEARCH whatsoever and is an embarrassment to the BBC.

Why do they always have to send a presenter? Nolan should be in the studio. A reporter could provide interviews and paint a picture of the situation in Nice. A problem with 5 Live for years now is that they put the presenters at the centre of everything. This only works to an extent if there are two presenters like at breakfast and drive, and one is in the studio.

It would be more stranger if the coup happened while 5 Live was broadcasting from somewhere for a celebratory reason like when they went to Leicester and Oswestry.

So Nolan's in Nice asking stupid questions, while there's a coup going on in Turkey ? Mind you, the BBC's rolling news channel's no better. They've hardly mentioned
Turkey til 10 mins ago !

They do the same with Wimbledon - constant interruptions for extended discussion about other sport. They might as well have ads!

Great hearing John Inverdale over the weekend covering the Golf. For me, still the best Radio Sports anchor in the business, who can cover any sport well. The others specialise in one thing, like Chappers with Football.

But definitely the word has gone out to all reporters in every commentary, whatever the sport, SHOUT and make it sound really exciting, so we can use the clips in sports bulletins every half hour and on trailers that make you reach for the volume button.
