10 Greatest Female Artists

In no particular order.

With so many threads on the likes of Beyonce and other such nonsense I thought I'd be controversial and talk about female artists that are actually good:

Tori Amos
Would love to see Queen B Beyonce try and compose a song like Cornflake Girl lol.

Lissie
Listen to Shameless and then let me know how boring Adele can touch that.

Grimes
Everything done on her records is by herself. That's what you call artistry. Take note Beyonce. Oh and her songs are catchier than Beyonce's too

Fiona Apple
Needs no introduction really. At age 19 she was putting out Tidal. What was Beyonce doing at 19? Singing some generic RnB tune written by a suit,

Hayley Williams (Paramore)
Yes kids you don't have to whore yourself out to make it big.

Rae Morris
Ellie Goulding had potential, then Rae Morris came along and showed her how it's done. Now Ellie's gone down the pan.

Sky Ferreira
This girl has got swag and the tunes to boot.

Halsey
As above, edgy pop.

Alanis Morissette
Once again at 19 she was putting out Jagged Little Pill. A far more important album than anything by Adele.

Florence Welch
While Lady Gaga tries to be mysterious and intellectual (and fails miserably) Florence doesn't try to be anything but herself, and no one even dares attempt mimick her because they can't reach that level.

Honourable mentions: Sheryl Crow, Haim (band), Lorde, Betty Who, Charli XCX.

Kate Bush surely has to be up there as one of the greatest, if not the greatest female artist.

But then again it depends on who you like and who you don't like I guess, it's all subjective!

I like your choices. especially Tori Amos, Grimes, Halsey and Haley Williams. But I think it's not such a strong line between commercial and non commercial music, a lot of more indie people really don't like Paramore and Halsey, they see them as just as commercial and manufactured as Beyonce, even though I personally love them.

I think you missed out on a few artists. though, like PJ Harvey and Shirley Manson of Garbage.

But I do wonder why people make these lists of best female artists. Why should there be a separation based on gender? To me, it comes across as female musicians are something weird or bizarre that need there separate category.

Is it entirely subjective? I don't think so, the OP dissed Beyonce for various reasons, one of which was presumably about writing ability. So I agree how can you leave out Kate Bush, Carole King, Joni Mitchell or Mary Chapin Carpenter who are all better writers and musicians than any on the list above, I presume it's just because the OP's memory doesn't stretch that far. And if you want edgy and experimental, where is Bjork, PJ Harvey, Janelle Monae or Julia Holter?

I'm not convinced you have to be a writer to be a great female (or male) artist. It helps but
because they didn't write much doesn't stop Aretha, Tina, Whitney bring great artists.
And Beyonce is a great artist despite the OP's opinion, and she will be remembered long after many of the above are not,

Any such list not headed by Debbie Harry, Siouxsie Sioux and Kate Bush is completely invalid. Nina Persson has to be somewhere in there as well.

Sorry but how many threads are there on Beyonce and Little Mix. Somebody has to take a stand. If that stuff wasn't so overrated and overexposed there wouldn't be an issue. The way we are instructed by the media to worship Beyonce is laughable.

Many good artistes there, but give me Beyonce over the irritating, not knowing the meaning of words whining of Morrisette.

In fact, I'd rather Swift or well practically anyone in the World apart from Geri Halliwell..

I do find it odd, this thread though, why not just praise these people rather than use it as a thinly-disguised slating of Beyonce and Adele?

I don't think people can accuse Paramore of being manufactured. There's nothing manufactured about artists who write and perform their own music.

I haven't listened to PJ Harvey enough to forge an opinion. But I know she will get a lot of mentions too.

The list is because female musicians don't get enough credit because they aren't whoring themselves out or selling sex. A fine example would be how much more famous is Rita Ora than Rae Morris. Yet which one makes better music?

Just a comparison really. Adele and Beyonce are shoved down our throats so much. Maybe Adele doesn't court it but Beyonce certainly thinks shes all that and more.

Alanis knows that the Ironic lyrics aren't the true meaning.

LOL I do generally stick to music from my era, 90's onwards. I have nothing against older music, it's just never appealed to me to listen to stuff from before my time. I also prefer the higher production values that newer music offers.

It's only subjective to a certain degree.

Tori Amos has more musical talent than Beyonce, it's just a fact.

The point is though that most if not all the true great female music icons were the pioneers in the olden days before you were born lol. So superior production of today or not, the true greats are older then most you listed many of whi h are clearly influenced by the original greats.

Yes, but when a lot of people say manufactured that don't always mean the person doesn't write their own music. A lot of times they mean they don't like the style of music someone does even though they may write it themselves. They often mean the person is doing something too commercial and not innovative or unique enough.

I don't like idea that women who are sexual can't also be talented. Society is so judgmental of women who are sexual. Why can't women express their sexuality in their work and still be seen as talented? Look at the late Prince who used sexuality in his work but no one ever said he wasn't talented or he was whoring himself out.
So are you saying there couldn't be a female singer who is sexual but also makes good music? My all time favourite female artist is Madonna. Yet people always accuse her of not being talented merely because she is also sexual. I think that's wrong.
