Really. Sorry just think it's a joke. 'I don't want to sound arrogant but I know what I'm doing'.

There's a hell of a lot resting on tonight's episode then!

This is nothing compared to Pat's death. I'm surprised because the writers are obsessed with the Mitchells, I thought they'd get it right. Can't get the right Sam back and can't even get her in a scene with Phil, Grant and Peggy.

'Can't get the right Sam back' do you know how stupid that sounds? IF anything, Daniella is the real/'right' Sam.

Even still, Sam Mitchell in whichever incarnation should have scenes with her dying mother but she doesn't.

Babs said they did her proud, and she was happy with her final scenes, she also got a lot of say of what happened.

No actor or actress should have a say in what happens to their character. It's up to the writing team and people backstage to decide.

Indeed but at least Babs deciding as someone who knows the character is better than what has happened too much under DTC the fan fiction influence.

We're spared that nonsense at least.

When Babs returned briefly in 2013 she claimed she tore the scripts up because they were so poor, and basically improvised her lines. It was probably an exaggeration, but there's an important point here: I think it's right that actors have a say in their characters, especially if they've been playing them for a long time. The actors often know their own characters better than many of the writers do.

Wendy Richard left the show because the writers ignored her pleas about Pauline remarrying. She was dead against it and believed Pauline would never remarry after Arthur, and she was right.

Don't agree with this at all. With the likes of actors like Barbara and June who have played the characters for decades, they know their characters better than any writer or producer.

Its very important that actors have a say in characters lines, costume etc.

It is after all an ensemble piece

DTC almost always comes across as arrogant and it always slaps him in the face in the end. I don't know how he hasn't been humbled by now

Barbara Windsor is great as Peggy and it's nice that her death is understated but overall the storyline is rushed and somewhat unsatisfying. Hopefully her final episode delivers on the Grant, Sharon, Kathy front. I was waiting for her scenes with those characters the most but she's wasted time faffing about with the likes of Stacey (pointless callback to a crap storyline) and Dot, who I never thought she was that close to

I don't agree. Fair enough if they've only been around a wet day but not if they've spent decades playing a character. If the actors who played Pat and Pauline had a say in their storylines it's likely Pat wouldn't have been killed off and Pauline would have had a more fitting exit or perhaps not left at all until Wendy Richards died. There comes a point when certain actors have been part of "the company" longer than the current writers have been out of nappies. There's no way they could know a decades old character better than the actor playing them.

The writers can write what they want but they aren't always right and they don't always know their characters better than the actor portraying them or the viewers watching at home.

If you ask me, that is part of the problem. It feels more of a goodbye towards Barbara as she leaves the show than writing out a character of 20 years standing.

Of course the lines will blur somewhat, it's inevitable when a cast member has spent so long on a show and is loved and respected by her colleagues but it all feels rather self indulgent to me.

That doesn't mean I don't think much of it hasn"t been well written and acted (McFadden rarely gets it wrong and Windsor was outstanding in those 'quiet' scenes last week) but controversially, I think Pat's was done better.

I've always thought that Windsor's actions in 2013 were very questionable and disrespectful to a colleague - both in 'ripping up' their work and then publicly speaking up about it.

Yes of course an actor that has been in a role for years, is intelligent and cares often will have a better handle on what makes their character tick than a new producer or writer so they should be able to speak up about it, be listened to and included in decisions. Richards was absolutely right that Pauline would never marry again.

I understand June Brown and John Altman asked if it would be okay if they worked on the script to get the tone of Dot and Nick's speach patterns right and I think that was fair enough as they weren't changing the actual content and asked permission.

But, surely it is about respect and collobaration and I see no respect in deciding that you, somebody who is not a professional writer, work will be better than somebody employed to do that job so you can just discard their lines, without consultation, and say your own instead. And for the record, I have no idea what the original script was like, but I wasn't impressed with what ended up on screen.
