I've been running this one around in my head for weeks and I think I'm further away than ever from making a final decision.
The time has come to retire my old 32" HD Ready TV to bedroom duty so I'm in the market for a new telly.
I have most of my parameters worked out:
Around £400 to £600
43" maximum
Smart features not particularly important
No 3D (I'm not paying for a feature I'll never use)
No voice control (I've never spoken to a telly and I'm not about to start now).
The main sticking point I have is whether or not to go for one of the entry level 4k sets or get a decent 1080 one instead. Considering there is very little 4K content out there at the moment - and most of what there is doesn't really interest me - then the 4K feature would probably be dormant for a good few years by which time my TV could be barely fit for purpose any more. On the other hand, I could well be future-proofing myself and by the time it is fully rolled out then I'm already on the ladder.
I suppose a big problem is the fact that I will still be watching a fair bit of SD for a very long time. I've got a huge DVD collection consisting of many films that will probably never be released on Blu Ray or better and that I probably wouldn't want to re-buy if they did. My current telly does a pretty good job with a good SD source but I've seen some big, expensive HD sets that are nearly unwatchable when it comes to SD stuff and I can't imagine the 4Ks are putting much effort in that area. Of course, when I pop into Currys and ask to see what their TVs look like in SD they look at me as if I've just asked them if an iPod will play my old 78s.
HD stuff is still very important though, mainly sport and my fairly decent sized Blu Ray collection.
So the question is: Entry level 4K set for future-proofing that may look cack for a lot of my stuff or a good HD set that will do everything I want but which is probably already on the road to obsolescence.
Any fresh opinions will be gratefully received.
