The killing of Pat Butcher
Has to be the biggest crime in soap history.
Bryan Kirkwood should be utterly ashamed of himself. |

not really, the actress chose to leave. the character was given a fitting end
not really his fault she decided 12 months later she only wanted a break |

He should be utterly ashamed for ruining what would have been Brendan's perfect exit from Hollyoaks too

It was a major mistake. Pat was so great, humorous and emotional/dramatic when needed. I can just see her now, drinking with Kathy and Sharon in The Vic, visiting Dot every so often for a catch up, interacting with the Carters and just being amazing.
Why oh why did they kill her off?!! |

Yes. A TV disaster. Pat has always been my absolute favourite soap character and seeing her 'back' today was just a small reminder of how brilliant a character Pat is and how wonderful an actress Pam St Clement is.

No, she specifically asked not to be killed off and was told she was not going to be killed off.
Birkwood moved the goal posts to suit his freaky obsession with death. BRYAN BIRKWOOD HANG YOUR HEAD IN SHAME. Bab's even went as far as to say all the cast couldn't believe it. I'm sure the clip is on Youtube. Pam didn't want to upset Simon Ashdown who she thought wrote a beautiful episode so didn't talk about it for years. Its all in her book. Kirkwood told her she wouldn't be killed off then he later called her into the office and said she would be. Now as Bryan Kirkwood has never sued her for slander I think we can safely assume her version of events is what happened. |

Pam st clement.. time to leave before I bore viewers http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/p...to-leave-99127 where does it say I want an extended break. I am sorry but the actors/actresses do not control what happens to their characters. If they choose to leave or dont have their contracts renewed, it is up to the producers and writers to determine how that character exits. Pat was killed off, right decision in my opinion |

I absolutely loathed Pat when she first appeared. Never would I have thought that vindictive harpy would eventually become one of my all-time favourite EE characters.

Even he was "miffed" at the then known decision to kill off Pat from EE as he thought it was a massive mistake to do so. Even Larry didn't want to be killed off from EE as Archie but stated he was only brought in for a set period of time with the known intention he was going to be killed off the second time around. |

I must admit, tonight's episode really did show me how much I missed Pat. I liked Pat's exit - it had me in tears, but I do miss her, and if she was killed off against her wishes, then that's that an utter shame and was highlighted tonight.

Hands down the worst decision any exec producer has taken in the history of the show.
Seriously, f*** Bryan Kirkwood

The video of Bab's saying it is there. She said: ‘Pam was a disgrace, we never understood it. I gathered, and she told me, she wanted a little time off and next thing I know she’s phoning me up saying, “Can I come and see you?” and she looked at me her face with big tears and she went, “They’re killing me off Bar”. ‘Nobody knew why, nobody and by God isn’t she missed! ‘I hope she don’t mind me saying that… I think everybody knew she didn’t want to go, it was a shock to her. She’s a good bird and she’s a good lady to have in a show like that.’ Pam says more or less the same thing in her own book. |

It was clear that Pam St Clement didn't want to go permanently but Kirkwood was too busy with his idiotic ideals of turning EE into another Hollyoaks littered with cardboard cut-out younger characters, whilst relegating long standing and older characters to secondary status. Kirkwood finally got his comeuppance after he was sacked (I don't believe the BS he "moved on") from EE after a string of disastrous decisions that caused massive negative PR for EE, such as the baby swap storyline that also saw Sam Womack quit in protest. |

As I said elsewhere Bryan Kirkwood should never have been allowed to work in TV again after making such a stupid and unpopular decision to kill off Pat.

I would've said bring her back from the dead Kathy style (somehow!). But now i think it would make Peggy's final scene less special. It was just so lovely that Pat came back and had her final FINAL scene just with Peggy, how it should've been, since Peggy wasn't around when she died. It was the perfect closing chapter to two legendary characters.
I shall miss them both dearly

No wonder he is clinging onto Hollyoaks for dear life, i have never known a producer stay at one soap so long, he must know no one else will have him

At the time I believe Pam asked for time off without any set return date. I think Pam then dressed it up saying she had decided to leave, that she wanted to play other characters etc, but some time later she said she would have gone back after 12 months or so.
I think Pat leaving was a big loss to the show, but any long serving character deciding to leave is a loss to the show IMO. But it happens and shows have to deal with it, and the fact is when you're an older actor it can be more rewarding to an audience to have closure on a character that may never return. No matter what I think of the shows decision to kill her off, I loved Pat's exit and thought it was very fitting - people hate the Derek thing, but Pat was someone I thought that should have gone to the grave with unfinished business - she had such a colourful life I think it would have been wrong for the show to suggest that the character died with her house in order. Personally I'd have loved to have seen Pat move to Spain. A few years later, once Babs had left, they could have gone and done a whole week worth of specials showing Pat and Peggy out there, drinking, sunning and fighting over men. |
