Between a fine and accomplished actor in Steve McFadden... and the utter plank of wood that is Ross Kemp!

I didn't rate his acting, either. It sounded like he was reading the lines from a piece of paper for the first time! But I appreciated the character coming back.

I can see what you're saying in appreciating the return of a well-loved character... but for me it was a total let down given the acting skills of Steve, and indeed, Dame Barbara herself.

'twas a shame really

Ross said he was nervous about going back after some time out of the acting game. It showed but I thought he did fine,

Ross does documentaries more these days anyway. He may not be the best actor but the documentaries he makes take a lot of ball as he puts himself in real danger,so I respect him for that.

Exactly.

He said he was rusty and nervous and it did show. I think a lot of actors would seem 'out of place' returning to a character after 10 years, even if they'd kept up acting.

No, he wasn't as good as McFadden, I'm not entirely sure he ever was but he managed and I appreciate that he agreed to come back when he didn't have to.

I've always felt sorry for him, he probably didn't want to go back considering al the bullying that happened last time. It's a shame he didn't get that part he wanted on family affairs, there all really nice people at family affairs.

Ross Kemp isn't the best actor in the world, but he's perfectly exceptional for a soap. I don't think he's wooden at all. Him and Grant are legends.

Steve however is exceptional and the better actor (IMO). He is worthy of a BAFTA/Oscar. Him and Woodyatt are the best actors the show have ever had, in my view and luckily they're two of the longest serving actors in soap. Their contribution has been none other than outstanding.

When compared to Steve McFadden most actors in the show will come up short.

Ross Kemp's acting was a little rusty tonight, but he wasn't that bad.

This, Steve has always been the better actor like you said.

"Wasn't that bad" Really? He was awful... I was hoping for so much more given the gravitas of the episode... he just wan't up to it.

Better than what?

Better than a plank of wood? A piece of granite? A cardboard box? Better than any other inanimate object?

Steve McFadden is particularly good. Very few are up to him when the scripts are good.

Agreed.

McFadden is probably the best actor in the show. Most people don't look great next to him. Who do we think comes off best in a scene between Phil and Jack for example?

Kemp was fine for years acting opposite him, he's just rusty. And also, the way it was written which is true to the original characters, Grant is always going to be the bull in a China shop one whilst Phil is more understated.

Which is what makes Jamie Borthwick so remarkable and so very underused - when given the chance he matched Steve in every scene recently.

They probably should have scheduled it so there were a few more scenes where he actually spoke or did something other than sit in a taxi before this episode. But I think it is harder for bigger characters to come back, we expect them to be ad they were. As much as some found Kathy's slow reintroduction boring, it probably benefitted her not having huge scenes right away.

See, it's attitudes like this that lead to declining standards.

If they decided to cast everyone on looks then we end up with a soap like Hollyoaks or Home and Away.

I'd much rather watch Steve McFadden any day of the week, because he's a good actor.

😅😅😅😅
I think he was fine. Played off well with Steve (who is the best actor in the show) and Letitia. Want more of him. There's so much still to explore with Grant (though I thought it was a bit corny and silly to have him and Danny Dyer stare each other down - for one thing, why would Mick of all people give I'm about to punch you evils to a bloke he's never met, and for another - Mick wouldn't stand a chance, despite what Dyer says).
