Not at all, I don't become annoyed by light entertainment shows.

I must admit the show tonight lacked oomph, and I agree Grant seemed more interested in his money than his Mum

Well it was strongly implied that Grant the money Grant needed and didn't have meant he was in serious trouble, most likely he owed it to someone who would cause serious damage to him and his family if they don't get it. Therefore putting Courtney's safety above his mother's was logical. He had taken all of his Mum's pill's away (or so he thought) and it was likely that Peggy had a few months left, based on what the doctors had told her and Phil. So once he 'sorted out' his money issues on the Algarve he would be back to support Mum.

I thought that they made it clear that he was in serious strife about the missing money and has been dealing with it for months, even years if it goes back to when Kathy was on the run. So, he's been brooding on it and it was at the forefront of his mind.
Everything with Peggy was new and rather abstract. He wasn't given any details as to what was happening and as far as he was concerned, she'd been talked out of killing herself so he had time to go back to Spain, sort out the mess that Phil has left him in (perhaps loan sharks are threatening Courtney) and then come back for Peggy when she has got worse. |

Also, it might not be pleasant, but it is true to life (in my experience) that people do concentrate on other issues like work, money even when a loved one is on their death bed as they can't cope with the enormity of what is happening.

It was tacky and tasteless but obviously the set up for his three week return stint.

That was confusing. We saw Phil with a bag of money that he got from Grant sometime before Christmas. He was dishing out bundles of money to all the relatives, which Sharon took back. Then more recently he gave Sharon £500,000 as a divorce settlement. If the money wasn't his to keep then why has he been giving it away. I'm not saying that he didn't help Kathy out, but he's been overly generous with it when he knew it was just a loan.
