The Significance of the Clock Stopping on Peggy's Exit

It was a nice, moving touch. And it subtly signals the end of an era in a very unique way.

What do you think it was done for?

But I find it fascinating how it's a very frequent occurrence for clocks to stop just after the death of someone in real life.

I didn't realize until it was pointed out to me afterwards, and a quick bit of research suggests the same thing.

Has anyone had anything similar?

No, but when my great grandmother died, all 8 of her children heard banging on their windows (in each of their own homes) at roughly the same time.

Things like this are really incredible but always give hope that there's life beyond.

I've seen my Grandad twice and heard from him

A member of my family had also asked that there'd be a sign if anything basically ever happened to a family member. She heard a knocking at the door.

It's fascinating

Don't mind there being something else, but I don't think I'd sleep again if I was given proof!

Do we know what time the clock stopped? I couldn't catch it, but wondered if it was 'last orders' time?

When my nan died, we noticed several hours later that the kitchen clock stopped at quarter past 7, the time she died. It's quite significant really how that happens and I liked how EastEnders did it.

In fact clocks did stop when people died in the old days because they needed winding up every night - usually by the head of the household.

The Man in Black's version of 'My Grandfather's Clock' (1876).

It is a very old legend though and was a nice touch.

That would be true here but
1) her clock is very unlikely wind up
2) it wouldn't stop like that within a minute of her passing

But it's interesting I agree

Artistic effect, nothing more. Bit OTT but thats EE for you

Like all superstitions or myths, there is a basis in truth and I suspect much of it was to do with when clocks needed to be wound frequently, at least twice a day so it would be missed when somebody in the household died, not being noticed until several hours later.

I have,'t experienced clocks stopping when somebody dies in the age of batteries, mains power connection myself but have no doubt it does happen. And in this case, it was an artistic touch and I'd imagine it was at 'last orders'.

I was not really referring to Peggy's death in my post as such - just that old legends often do have a grain of truth to them.

Yeah I totally get what you're saying
It's interesting how that's probably the explanation they put it down to.. Then years later.. It became harder to do it.

There is a life beyond indeed

Like Hit_The_North said, it was for artistic effect, as soaps often do, it was quite a nice little touch though.

When we first saw the dripping tap earlier in the episode, I thought we might see the tap stop dripping when she passed, but nope, so not sure why they focused on the tap for a couple of seconds.

They focused on the tap because she used it to get water to take the diamorphine pills.

I thought the clock symbolized her heart to be honest.

Same the clock symbolized her heart and when her heart stopped, so did the clock.

I just thought that somebody had forgot to wind the clock.

What was the time of the clock when she died? Was it the same time as 'last orders?'

A Paul Merton joke on this subject;
'There is something to this. My gran died when she was eighty one and the grandfather clock stopped at exactly the same time...it fell on her.'

This thread reminded me that my mom and auntie used to have the same clock and when my granddad died they both stopped at quarter past three - i'm not sure if this was the time he passed away though, but I have just remembered this now.

It's amazing how many people are experiencing this.

Gives insight into the fact we are far more than just flesh and bones

That's brilliant!

Of course there is going to be the issue of a watch being damaged if a death is violent (car crash or bad fall for example) so it would stop at the same as the injury which causes the death.

But i assume the instances being recounted here were not like that.

My mother's grandmother was Irish and she used to stop the clocks in the house when someone died until they were "safely" buried - apparently she believed that the sound could attract the Devil who'd not only take the deceased to Hell (whether they deserved it or not) but any other soul he came upon. I have no idea if her being Irish had anything to do with it but that is the way the story has always been told in the Family.

Her husband, who made great pains to point out he was of Scottish stock (there was apparently some bad feeling about him marrying an Irish Catholic), would stop the clocks if someone died in the house for a more prosaic reason - that way he could correctly and easily inform anyone who needed to know the time of death just by looking at the clock!

My next door neighbour's burglar alarm went off at the time her brother died.

My nan's dad died and a loud unexplained bang was heard. The dog wouldn't go upstairs it's coat standing on end and my aunty saw her grandad standing in the doorway although that was not possible as dying/dead at the time.
