I have an ingrown hair on my leg, it's been there for months, on my calf.

I think it was last year and I thought it was a gnat bite and then one that wouldn't go, but now I know it's an ingrown hair.

I have tried many things now, ingrow go, exfoliating it, using a hot compress. It's not coming out, even though I can see a little hair under there.

I've had a few recently that I've been able to sort out myself (one of the curses of having curly hair!).

Anyway, does anyone know if a beauty salon or something would remove me it for me if I went in and asked? I'm presuming they must remove some if you are having hair removal treatment.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Amelia

Ingrowns are a nightmare.

Good idea with the warm compress. I'd keep on doing that.

I would also try using a dab of spot removal cream or other topical acne treatment to the area too each day. I use Boots' Ultra Skin Clear Rapid Action Spot Gel. I think the general idea of using this is it will in time help the hair to grow out.

Carry on exfoliating the skin too.

You said you can see the hair. Hopefully if you try the above steps too the hair will get close enough to the surface of your skin for you to try and pull out with tweezers.

I've had success with the above with ingrowns in a few areas including my neck.

If you've still not had any joy after a week I'd suggest visiting the GP.

Thanks for your reply.

I have been doing this for a good few weeks, maybe a month.
The trouble is, I cannot see the hair at the top, it's more I can see a tiny bit of black that tells me it is a hair.

Thanks for the spot cream idea too, I have some aloe vera, will that be okay for now?

I hate to bother the doctors with something like this. Do you think they would do anything, like remove it for me? At this point I just want it gone so it can get to healing up now, that's why I was thinking of going to a salon to ask them to get the thing out!

Try using an acid toner over it for a few days.

I regularly suffer from ingrown hairs and have found this is the best remedy for the really deep lodged ones. I use the toner for a few days but do not moisturise. When the skin gets a little bit dry, I squeeze it like I would squeeze a spot and the hair (and skin usually) pop out. Do it on dry legs though - not wet ones after a bath or anything.

Sorry it's a bit of a rank description, but it really does work for me.

Hi Amelia,

That sounds similar to a pesky ingrown hair I had a while ago.

I think the spot gel I mentioned has salicylic acid as an active ingredient and this should help the skin cells to shed and for your pores to become unclogged.

Salicylic acid is also used in some skin toners so I think tigerowl's suggestion could be an alternative.

I bet your GP will have dealt with the problem a fair few times. I've had to go to mine for infected hair follicle problems twice and ingrowns can be a cause of that. I think it's probably like a lot of skin complaints really in that you can buy over the counter stuff for it but it doesn't always do the trick.

Hope you get some relief soon.

You can use a needle to hook it out. I used to do electrolysis and this is how we'd deal with stubborn ingrowns. Obviously you need to sterilise the needle and disinfect the area.

Add a mug full of Epsom salts to a hot bath. They can really help draw it out. The salts are cheap as chips on eBay.

You could also add some to a basin full of water and hold a hot flannel over the hair a few times a day.
