"An EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo has disappeared from radar, the Egyptian airline says.

It says there are 59 passengers and 10 crew members on board Flight MS804.

The aircraft was flying at 37,000ft (11,300m) when it went missing over the eastern Mediterranean. An official said the plane lost contact with radar at 02:45 Cairo time (00:45 GMT).

The company said it would issue an update "when more information becomes available".

EgyptAir said the plane disappeared about 10 miles (16km) into Egyptian air space.

According to the flightradar24.com website, which tracks passenger flights around the globe, the plane is an Airbus A320."

http://www.theguardian.com/world/liv...s-live-updates "Egypt’s civil aviation ministry has confirmed that search and rescue teams are looking for the missing plane."

----------

Worrying time for all concerned.

i hope everyone lands safely.

how often do planes go off the radar? seems to be happening more frequently or is it just the reporting?

I was hoping it was just some sort of temp "radar blip" / loss of communications but it's been missing now since 00:45 GMT

That is too high for a rocket from the ground, hope it is not hijacking or major mechanical fault. With any luck it will just be a glitch with the electronics.

Can't see any flights at all over Egypt with this : https://www.flightradar24.com/27.76,30.98/6

" Ahmed Abdel says – and this differs slightly from the numbers given by EgyptAir via Twitter earlier – there were 66 people on board:

56 passengers
3 security personnel
2 cockpit crew
5 cabin crew crew

There were “no recorded snags coming out of Cairo” or reported before leaving Charles de Gaulle for Cairo, he says. "

"Associated Press reports that Ihab Raslan, a spokesman for the Egyptian civil aviation agency, told SkyNews Arabia that the Airbus A320 most likely crashed into the sea.

However, he also said the plane was about to enter Egyptian airspace when it disappeared from radar, contradicting the airline, which said it was 10 miles (16km) inside Egyptian airspace when contact was lost.

It is not uncommon for conflicting information to surface at this stage – the number of those on board has already been adjusted from 69 to 66.

The captain on flight has 6,000+ flying hours, including 2,000 on an A320.

Abdel says there was no special cargo on the flight and no notification had been made to the captain of dangerous goods on board. "

Flying at 37 000 ft though is surely in cruise control, ie the safest time during a flight? I believe there are very few incidents at this height.
I've only just tuned in though so haven't heard any facts yet.

Fox News are reporting that a vessel called in a flame in the sky.
Surely it's not normal to have three security officials on a short haul flight? It makes me wonder if there was an important person on board.

Well that starkly brings it home. The flight just...stops somewhere over the sea. Horrible to think about that... At first I wondered if it simply lost communications but it could easily have landed somewhere by now so it's not looking hopeful for a happy ending is it? Whatever the cause.

These websites are tracking a transmission from the aircraft, so turning the transmitter off would have the same effect.

It's difficult to imagine how the aircraft can suddenly reappear now. How sad.

Surely if it crashed inland they would of spotted it by now?

If it's down in the Med, then search area will be small. The plane will turn up. The worrying scenario is that it is hijacked and on route to the US or landed somewhere?

Seems odd that a plane can just vanish from radar over Europe. In fact its damn scary.

The UK has a base in Cyprus. I refuse to believe their radar didn't pick it up

It probably did but all they can confirm (should they or any other radar operator choose to do so) is that they lost contact at a certain time at a certain location. No different from a ATC radar operator.

Looks like another tragedy

Sky News now speculating whether the aircraft was correctly maintained, maybe they should wait for a few more details to come out before making such baseless speculation.

It would have to refuel to make it to the US, surely too complex an operation even for a large terrorist organisation

Egyptian military has denied that there was a distress call.

Flicking between all news channels this morning, you can't help but sense they want it to be terror related.

Strange that no-one has spotted any wreckage yet, given that it is in a much more defined area than, say, MH370.

Also, some very bland statements being given out:

'Cannot rule out the possibility of terrorism'

'Confirm that a crash is a possibility'

No kidding.....

"EGYPTAIR Crisis Center follows up the situation and urges the media resources to abide by the official news issued and sent by the company." https://twitter.com/EGYPTAIR

I suppose the temptation is just too much for some of the media.
