I have noticed there are several new films and TV shows on my Netflix but, on looking at them, see that the ratings for the films are very low - one star and slightly above!

I tend to pick films with at least four stars and ignore the others. I might be missing out on some decent films but recently there hasn't been anything which looked interesting. Too many US teenage stories!

I am getting a NowTV box for my birthday at the beginning of June and am seriously thinking of cancelling Netflix! Has anyone any opinions on this?

They're not ratings in the way you think, the higher the star rating the more within your predicted taste range they are. Just because something has a low rating it doesn't mean it's terrible it just means it may not be the sort of thing you usually watch based on your own ratings. (Red stars = within your taste range, Yellow stars = what you've rated)
The more things you rate the more it gets to understand what you actually like and what you dont.
Netflix Ratings & Recommendations

We give you the ability to rate your movie and TV show suggestions on a 1-5 rating scale and also have a great built in way to only surface content that is suggested based on your viewing history. The more you use Netflix, the more relevant your suggested content will be.

How do ratings affect my Netflix recommendations?
We offer thousands of titles to stream -- that’s a lot! When you rate movies and TV shows, you're helping us filter through the thousands of selections to get a better idea of what you'd like to watch.

How does it all work? We use a recommendation algorithm that takes certain factors into consideration, such as:

The genres of movies and TV shows available.
Your streaming history, and previous ratings you’ve made.
The combined ratings of all Netflix members who have similar tastes in titles to you.

How do ratings work?
Netflix gives you the option to rate movies and TV shows that you've watched or that have been recommended to you on a 1-5 star rating scale, with a one star rating meaning 'Hated It,' and a five star rating meaning 'Loved It.' Star ratings in red indicate an overall Netflix rating for the title and star ratings in yellow indicate the rating you've given the title.

You can also rate titles from the movie description page for a movie or TV show.

You may also review the titles that you've previously rated by clicking on Ratings under the My Profile section of Your Account.
Rating movies and TV shows is an easy way for you to help teach us what you like. The more titles you rate, the better our suggestions will be.

Thanks for the explanation. I didn't realise that my own ratings would make much of a difference.

No problem.
When looking through what to watch, instead of ignoring everything you've previously seen, it's worthwhile giving them a rating as you go too.

I have decided to cancel Netflix now that I have the Now TV box which is very user friendly. It was much easier to cancel than I thought it would be.

I have Now TV also but I use Netflix for limited times.
Only 10% of netflix is new stuff as 90% of it was seen on Freesat

Nothing to stop you jumping between the two. Unlike Sky, Now TV is designed to be a pick up- put down service. So cancel Netflix and try Now for a few months. When you get bored, switch back again. It's dead easy.

Two things to beware of with NowTV though, one, its lower picture quality than Netflix but not a problem if you view on small screen or your internet connection is not up to it and two, you let Sky put a hand in your pocket when you register your card details and there are many reports of money being taken without permission. If you’re coming and going with the service there’s a good chance you will be charged for something that you thought you had finished with.

I don’t understand the need for registering a bank card if you use vouchers other than for ID and a lot of problems with billing may or may not be down to misunderstanding the T&C but something to beware of all the same.

I won't switch between the two because the content on Netflix isn't as good nowadays. I have watched some good things on there such as Fringe and Daredevil but the newer things aren't so appealing.
