Why not shortwave? because nobody listens to shortwave. Radio Netherlands used to broadcast Netherlands football matches on shortwave.

Yeah, but the reason no-one listens is that there's no compelling, unique content on SW.
It's impractical to fund international shortwave radio rights for sporting events like Euro 2016 or even individual games within the tourney via advertising, because this is focussed on individual markets and you can't make enough money just from international brands on an international service. Nowadays with crowd-funding, however, you can establish separate funding pots for broadcasting individual games in the tournament and afterwards for games in domestic leagues; the EPL teams' support base is international, to give one example. All that's required to make that happen is that the rights holders don't make exclusive deals with one broadcaster or, alternatively and perhaps more attractively, that international SW radio rights packages would be sold as a separate category. Pie in the sky for Euro 2016 I know, but maybe an idea for the future. |

TalkSPORT2, OTOH, seemed to be silent most of the time I tuned in while in France.

Doing some games off-tube from London, like he did for World Cup?
One of Parry's game is Italy v Sweden, which takes place on 17th June. Stan Collymore, who is certainly at the games, is set to be his co-commentator. |

Confirmation that BBC Radio 5 Live will be providing commentary of some Euro 2016 matches off-tube this summer. Quote:
BBC 5 Live have been making great play of covering every game of Euro 2016. What they haven't announced is the number of matches that will be called off the television, normally a favourite tactic of rivals talkSPORT. A BBC spokesman said it would be in single figures. I know that some will be off-tube from the broadcast centre in Paris - and some will be off-tube from Salford (those involving Ian Brown).Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/foo...#ixzz4AsAMfuo1 More on the IBC: http://www.uefa.org/about-uefa/news/newsid=2371672.html |

Great to have Alan Parry back on the radio. Along with John Motson & Jonathan Pearce, I've always preferred their radio work to TV

well, I stand corrected re Alan Parry-- good to see him back in France covering a major tournament. his first major tournament on the then talk radio was France 98. the whole off tube thing to me is over played. no-one criticises sky for off tubing Spanish football but talksport and in this case 5Live get snarky articles written about it. lets be honest, the average listener probably doesn't even know or care.

Off tubing for the lesser games seems a sensible cost saving move to me.......as long as the home nations games aren't affected I really don't see the problem tbh..

Perhaps, I haven't really listened to the WS since the European service ended a few years back, in fact it's been a while since the 2001D was tuned to anything on the shortwave band. I'm surprised that, for 'set-piece' events like Euro 2016, the WS doesn't run pop-up SW services focusing on the footy. It seems to be a feature of the Beeb DAB mux, why not shortwave.
Reality is I can stream anything from the UK irrespective of geoblocking using VLC running SOCKS via one of my servers, it's just a bit of a faff; it would be great to fire up uRadio on my phone and be able to listen on a 'normal' device, same as I do ordinarily for Radios 4, 5 and Jackie. Five Live blocks sport by design on their international stream; TalkSPORT is a lot better, only the odd game is barkered for overseas IP addys and I've not quite figured out which combination of overseas rights gives rise to the block. TalkSPORT2, OTOH, seemed to be silent most of the time I tuned in while in France. Somewhat bizarrely I was able to watch Liverpool in both semi and final via the Turkish station TRT1, which just happened to be part of the cable package in the flat I was renting for a few months while on a job up until end of last month. Just shows how ridiculous all this 'international rights' guff is..... |

What is it with Charles Sale and his Daily Mail pieces that annoy me so much, its not even good investigative journalism, its just lazy journalism, putting 2 and 2 together and hoping you get 4. No wonder Shane Warne threatened to knock him out.
Do feel sorry for Ian Brown he always gets the off-tube games, it was the same at the last World Cup. Ian 'off-tube' Brown. |

People would notice if they couldn't mislead listeners by broadcasting sound from the stadium or any alternative crowd effects. They know people would care that's why they create a dishonest sound. In the case of this tournament, it's only in France - a lot closer to the UK than Brazil. As every match will be on TalkSport, there is no need for the BBC to broadcast radio commentary on matches to which it cannot afford to send people no doubt at the expense of coverage of other sport. |

One of Parry's game is Italy v Sweden, which takes place on 17th June. Stan Collymore, who is certainly at the games, is set to be his co-commentator.
So we know four members of talkSPORT's lead commentary team - Jim Proudfoot, Ian Danter, Alan Parry and Gary Taphouse - plus Nigel Adderley will be in France, but as their England correspondent, although he might be able to squeeze in the odd commentary Mike Ingham/Ian Dennis-style. It will be interesting to see if they need any more than that, I could see the likes of Andrew McKenna (who should stay in the UK for his talkSPORT 2 cricket commitments given that Dants is out in France), Nigel Pearson and Richard Connelly doing any off-tube games during the group stage - particularly the five final group games (bar Russia v Wales) that will be on talkSPORT 2. I see they've updated the talkSPORT.com schedule to include details of who is covering what in the group stage, albeit with a distinct lack of information about lead commentators. It also doesn't distinguish which ex-pros will be co-commentating or just providing punditry. On that, Stan Collymore has tweeted: Quote:
13 commentaries I'm guessing his other three games will be from the Round of 16 (unless he's fitting another group game in that doesn't involve England or Italy).
All England 2 Italy 2 quarters 2 semis Final Cant wait! Come on!! |

Here are the details of talkSPORT's coverage during the first few weeks of Euro 2016 as listed on talkSPORT.com. I won't list all of the schedules (I imagine parts of them are wrong - I see Up The League is still listed for Saturday despite the final edition of the season being on last week for example), but mainly just the live coverage:
Friday 10th June 19:00-22:00 - Euro Kick Off - Mark Saggers, Stan Collymore and Stuart Pearce bring you the start of Euro 2016 with France v Romania Saturday 11th June 13:00 - MDL Live Euro Special - Adrian Durham, Mark Saggers, Stan Collymore, Joey Barton and Stuart Pearce bring you all the games at Euro 2016 including England v Russia 22:00-23:00 - Call Collymore - Stan Collymore takes your calls on England v Russia Sunday 12th June 13:00-22:00 - Euro 2016 Live - Matt Smith, Adrian Durham, Mark Saggers, Keith Gillespie and Colin Murray bring you all the action from Euro 2016, including Poland v Northern Ireland. Monday 13th June 13:00 - Euro 2016 Live - Colin Murray and Ray Wilkins bring you live commentary of Spain v Czech Republic 16:00 - Euro 2016 - Adrian Durham and Matt Holland bring you live commentary of Republic of Ireland v Sweden 19:00-22:00 - Euro 2016 - Mark Saggers and Stan Collymore bring you live Euro 2016 commentary of Belgium v Italy Tuesday 14th June 16:00 - Euro 2016 - Adrian Durham and Stuart Pearce bring you live commentary of Austria v Hungary. 19:00-22:00 - Euro 2016 - Mark Saggers and Micky Gray bring you live commentary of Portugal v Iceland. Wednesday 15th June 13:00 - Euro 2016 - Adrian Durham and Stuart Pearce bring you live commentary of Russia v Slovakia. 16:00 - Euro 2016 - Adrian Durham and Ray Wilkins bring you live commentary of Romania v Switzerland. 19:00-22:00 - Euro 2016 - Mark Saggers and Ray Wilkins bring you live commentary of France v Albania. Thursday 16th June 13:00 - Euro 2016 - Mark Saggers, Stan Collymore and Danny Gabbidon bring you live commentary of England v Wales. 16:00 - Euro 2016 - Adrian Durham and Keith Gillespie bring you live commentary of Ukraine v Northern Ireland. 19:00-22:00 - Kick Off - Adrian Durham and Ray Wilkins bring you live commentary of Germany v Poland. Friday 17th June 13:00 - Euro 2016 - Adrian Durham, Alan Parry and Stan Collymore bring you live commentary of Italy v Sweden. 16:00 - Euro 2016 - Adrian Durham and Danny Higginbotham bring you live coverage of Czech Republic v Croatia. 19:00-22:00 - Euro 2016 - Mark Saggers and Ray Wilkins bring you live commentary of Spain v Turkey. Saturday 18th June 13:00-22:00 - Euro 2016 - Paul Hawksbee, Andy Jacobs and Matt Holland bring you live commentary of Belgium v Republic of Ireland + Colin Murray hosts Iceland v Hungary and Portugal v Austria. Sunday 19th June 13:00 - H & J in Bordeaux 16:00 - Press Pass - Round table discussion of the best sporting headlines of the week with Ray Stubbs. 19:00-22:00 - Euro 2016 - Mark Saggers and Ray Wilkins bring you live commentary of Switzerland v France. And that's as far as the talkSPORT.com listings go. A few things to note commentary-wise - I've heard Jim Proudfoot billed on-air as being talkSPORT's England commentator, so you can pencil him in for their games, plus Ian Danter has tweeted that he'll mostly be working with Danny Gabbidon, Keith Gillespie and Matt Holland, so I think we can expect him on most games (bar England v Wales) involving the Celtic nations. We know Gary Taphouse starts with Albania v Switzerland on the first Saturday and I think he and Alan Parry will mostly do games without home nation involvement - although given that Saggers and Stan are there, I reckon Jim will commentate on France v Romania in the opening game. Nice to see Danny Gabbidon is involved in talkSPORT's England v Wales coverage - hopefully he'll be co-commentating with Jim and Stan to keep things reasonably even-handed - and that talkSPORT haven't ditched coverage of the 5pm kick-off to do a phone-in (although I'm sure much of the 4-5pm hour will be devoted to calls). Perhaps they might have moved the 5pm kick-off to talkSPORT 2 had it not involved a home nation, but it's Ukraine v Northern Ireland which they are absolute right to have on the main station. I see coverage of the 8pm kick-off that night is the only game to be listed under the Kick Off moniker - which may or may not indicate the 7-8pm hour will be England v Wales and Ukraine v Northern Ireland reaction before they get into the commentary. It'll be interesting to hear Hawksbee & Jacobs host coverage of Belgium v Republic of Ireland on the second Sunday - I know they've hosted match coverage before, I remember them doing so during the 2006 World Cup, and Paul Hawksbee has hosted straight football programmes on Sky Sports and very occasionally as a cover host on talkSPORT in the past - but it's rare to hear them outside of their normal afternoon environment these days. Matt Smith will be hosting coverage of the 1pm game on the first Sunday, while Colin Murray will anchor a few games too. |

That's because most people don't watch Spannish football. International football tournaments involving England, like English domestic football, is mainstream and attracts big audiences.

I do, that's what "VLC running SOCKS via one of my [UK] servers" is. It's not an 'easy' solution as it constrains me to listening to the footy via a PC. I want to listen either on my phone's Internet radio app or a proper Internet radio. Using a VPN on my phone might otherwise have been a solution but a lot of consumer-grade routers have mysteriously dropped support for VPNs.

I use VPN to listen to geo-blocked things on my phone & tablet on different networks including a 4G mobile network in Australia, works fine most of the time, especially on radio, it's becoming increasingly difficult to use it watch TV on iPlayer though

Yeah, a UDP-based VPN is going to break regularly on 3G and 4G if inter-site (and sometimes even intra-site) handover is required. Do you have a TCP option with your VPN? Also there's an HTML5 iPlayer Beta that might work better at longer distances from Blighty, http://www.bbc.co.uk/html5. Give that a whizz, it doesn't work in Firefox, I run it in Chromium on an Ubuntu 14.04 laptop to watch footy highlights etc while overseas.
