Hard Disk lifetime
I got a Humax HDR just before Christmas 2008 & upgraded the disk to a WD10EVDS the following summer. I've recently noticed more blocking occasionally on replays so I thought the disk was probably on its way out. I decided to copy it all to a new WD10EURX, which is now working successfully (though I forgot about the required pin 5-6 link initially!).
I then ran 'badblocks' on the disk using the most severe read-write test mode - it took over 30 hours - and no bad blocks were found! The SMART data on the disk reveals no errors logged either, in over 36000 hours powered up, so I might be 50 odd quid down on a replacement disk I didn't need. However hopefully it'll now do another 7 years. What sort of experience have other people had with disk lifetime - did it outlast your use of the box, or did you need to replace it at some point? |

Could it be heat related? I've known PC drives that start falling over regular as clockwork when the drive hits a certain temperature. Switch them off and let everything cool down and they are fine until the magic temp is reached again. Test the drive when it is cool and it all appears fine.
Maybe something similar going on with your Humax? |

I suggest installing the custom firmware which has a disk checking utility.
The Humax firmware uses a fixed named file to record the time slip buffer, which it does constantly. If this buffer becomes corrupt then problems continually persist. The cust0om firmware allows you to rename the buffer so on the next reboot it is recreated. |
