Newbie to Soundbars - please help re matching with TV

My husband thought he was doing a good thing when our TV went kaput on Saturday and went out and bought a Bush 55" TV from Argos. He is a complete technophobe and didn't read reviews - I have, and it doesn't get good feeback - AT ALL.

I cant even return it as he threw the packaging away once he got it set up. Actually the picture is very good quality, but the sound is very "tinny" in spite of adjusting everything, and I cant get it to sound any better.

Can anyone advise me on the purchase of a soundbar to improve matters? Do I need to spend a fortune? I was really hoping not to have to spend more than around £100 or so - but I don't want to buy a cheaper one if it doesn't help!

Last question - do I need to buy a particular size to "fit" the TV or does a bar work with all sizes?

Sorry for the daft questions but Ive never had to buy one before - many thanks for any replies!

There is really only one thing you absolutely must have on the TV to use with a sound bar and that is some form of audio output that matches an audio input on the sound bar. Most TVs these days have an optical digital out and it is relatively easy to find sound bars with optical inputs.

100 quid is at the lower end of the scale for decent sound. You can buy any number of cheap bars from supermarkets, Argos and Currys at that level and below but sound quality may not be the best. Something like this Yamaha at £150 may be a better buy.

And as for size. It all depends on how OCD you are about the width of the TV and bar matching up Or if it bothers you that the TV is wider than the sound bar or vice versa.

The only other thing to watch with the size of the sound bar is the height and whether it obscures the bottom edge of the picture and possibly the remote control sensor. If that is a concern, eg the TV has a very low stand and cannot be raised up easily, then a sound base may be a better option. A sound bar sits just in front of the telly while the telly sits on top of a sound base so no issues with the height of the bar.

Thank you very much, the base looks the better option and that's an OK price, I didn't want to go into Curry's or somewhere for advice as they will sell you what they want to rather than what's best for you!
