I think this is the only showing of the video to The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
I don't recall ever seeing the video.

The lion sleeps permanently, from the look of it.
That because the villagers killed it for sleeping in their village.

Thankfully I know that's not true. Please don't inflict stress like that on me again Mr T!
If it was the current number 1 you would have it for another 13 weeks (at least) heh

Sublime. Magnificent. Spell bounding and Majestic. 3 and a bit minutes of pop perfection! Cheers for that Billy, you stole the show my boy.

His cheeky little looks at himself in the monitors are so endearing.

That was Brilliant.
Best song and performance since the TOTP repeats begun. Love the song so much I could almost weep real salt tears.

Talking about stealing the show - On a different note - when was Easter in 1982? As it was around Easter time that the legendary Alex Higgins won the 1982 Snooker World championship!!!.
Wonder what was No1 that week? - Please don't say it was The Goombay Dance band!

Oh dear - I forgot about that one! - Why do all bands go through a 'not so good' period over time?
The Associates should have been on an upwards trajectory after their 1982 album Sulk and the singles it spawned - but differences between Billy Mackenzie and Alan Rankine, especially over touring, ripped the group apart. Such a shame …

Sorry, but neither of you have made the point well at all. You have just ignored what I have said and answered a different question. Total failure. But let's leave it, I'm getting bored of it and I'm sure everyone else is. I just don't like it when posters hijack the thread to post their dismal anti SAW and Cowell comments (especially as neither were bothering the charts in 1982!)
Neither Jedikiah nor I are the ones who haven't answered questions … and there was no 'thread hijacking' involved - all this started with a FM commenting on 1982. Conversations evolve, and this is pretty mild when it comes to going off topic on the TOTP threads …

It certainly wasn't the first time SAW have been mentioned in a negative light (again, they got off lightly compared to previous instances), and I'm guessing it won't be the last … especially if we actually get to TOTP 1987!

It's a shame The Associates sunk without a trace after 1982. I don't know whether they tried to record any hits from 1983 onwards.
They weren't quite done, here's the brilliant Those First Impressions on TOTP in 84 although it didn't make Top40.

and the stunning Breakfast from early 85

Then there was a Billy solo single in around 93/94 called Baby which I've got somewhere.

The nicest thing I can say about SAW is that I don't recall any of their records making me want to rip my ears off, which is more than I can say for many current records...

I had even less idea that he had at least four hits!
And apparently two more minor hits, no 32 with Amor in October 82 and no 31 with Hey! in April 83. Nope, me neither!

not forgetting this near classic (IMO) that we'll get to see later in the year which made Top 20, not quite in the same league as party fears two and club country but still very good...bought the 12 inch at the time which had a very decent cover of love hangover on the flip

I remember 'Breakfast' being played on the radio - think it was on The Tube too?
Their glory days though, were definitely in 1982. Another wonderful song by them was 'Skipping' from their Silk album - it should definitely have been their follow up single!

Had a wee check back and surprisingly the Snooker World Final was later than usual in 1982. It was always generally on the first few days in May but back in 1982 the final took place over May 15th and 16th.

The No.1 at this time was Nicole's 'A Little Peace'.

I have all the Associates and Billy MacKenzie records as I was such a huge fan. Still am. Billy couldn't deal with the fame and record company demands and bailed out on a huge US tour to promote Sulk. Alan Rankine carried on for a year and remixed their first album The Affectionate Punch as an interim measure. Billy came back as The Associates without Alan but they were never the same. It really was a match made in heaven when they were together. They did actually record new songs just before Billy's death which most are available now. One song was a retaliation to Morrissey's 'William it was really Nothing' after it was rumoured they'd had a relationship together. Billy's version was "Stephen you were really something".

The Associates were really very good and consistent from 1980 right through to Sulk. The Fourth Drawer Down album really shows their diversity and how ahead of their time they really was

And probably sat there with Miss Scarlet & some lead piping, whilst writing it - I bet!!
Who committed this crime against music? I deduce it was Adrian, with his guitar, in the attic!!

Agree with everything you say here Torch.

I was just thinking what a great period it was for fabulous bands coming out of Scotland in this period too, like The Associates (from Highlander Ian's hometown), Altered Images and of course Simple Minds get their first big hit any day now. I'm sure I've missed some other obvious Scottish artists who broke through in this period.
BIB - mine too!

Ever get the feeling Adrian wasn't bothered if he wrote the song in an attic or not. Just looking for a world to rhyme with addict i bet.

Wouldn't surprise me if the cheeky scamp wrote it in the conservatory
Apparently "Classic" was originally called "Ballad" and the first two lines went;

Gonna write a ballad
Gonna write it eating salad.

Unfortunately he couldn't think of another rhyme for "Ballad" so the song had to be hastily rewritten as "Classic".

His second attempt was more truthful:

Gonna write a clunker
Gonna write it in a bunker

Giving last night's edition a 8 out of 10, with an extra quarter for Simon's time checks - he couldn't even get through the first link without doing it!

Off to a good start with Go Wild In The Country, but that's mainly because it was a new performance. I'm not sure how Steve Jones got away with wearing that T-shirt, though. I bet Michael Hurrl didn't see it beforehand.

I'm guessing Fun Boy Three and Bananarama were due to perform in the studio and maybe one of the Bananas was taken ill, hence the awkward interview with Fun Boy Three before the video. I'm glad they showed that instead of repeating the studio performance again, though the video did look really cheap.

Great to see another performance of See You and a gold star for Simon for getting their name right!

One for the Mums/Grans next. I like the video for Yours better than Beguin The Beguine, though not the song. It did seem though that Julio was more interested in singing the love song to his reflection in the mirror than the woman in the white dress.

I'd forgotten, so was pleasantly surprised, that Haircut 100 did another performance of Love Plus One. It seems to have been around for ages. Not sure why Nick and another band member were wearing macks, though.

Controversial opion alert - I really don't get what all the fuss is about Party Fears Two. Its a decent tune, but I'm afraid the OTT vocal is more on the side of annoying to me than amusing. The way Billy Mckenzie pronounces ugly "ugerly" really sets my teeth on edge. I did like his Frank Spencer/Michelle from the resistance getup though.

As much as I quite like Classic, it really is time for Adrian Gurvitz to go into his attic. I know the song climbs higher, but I don't think we see it again.

Shame Tight Fit didn't turn up in the studio for some more jungle-related antics. At least we had the video to enjoy anyway.

Great cameo from Sid Snot, aka Kenny Everett, though he's a year too early to do Snot Rap! Shame Kenny didn't co-host the edition, though at least he managed to sneak in a cheeky remark about "Julio Igreasyarse". It would be great if they were repeating his show after the TOTP repeats.

Can't say I'm that familiar with Stars On Stevie compared to other Starsound Hits, but I think it more than did its job as an upbeat song to play-out with. The recording I have has extra footage of the audience seeming a bit bewildered and wondering what to do after the song has ended.
