Those ^ four lines together could've contributed to his second & third verses!!

Yep, regarding Rich and Torch's comments.

Along with Aztec Camera and Orange Juice, 1983 would also see the chart debut of the brilliant Big Country. Sad parallels with The Associates in that their lead singers both took their own lives. Billy Mackenzie at 39 and Stuart Adamson at 43. Stuart of course had been in various bands since the 70's.

On the Dundee front, members of The Average White Band stemmed from Dundee. That was something I learned realtively recently to my shame!
Ricky Ross, the lead singer of Deacon Blue is a Dundonian.
Danny Wilson were a Dundee group - Remember 'Mary's Prayer' from 1988?
A more recent group to grow out of Dundee were The View. Their big hit was 'Jeans On' from 2007. I think they had a No.1 album at the time.
Not stictly from Dundee but Snow Patrol formed whilst the guys were at Dundee Uni.

Many have tried and failed to rhyme "classic". Only those who have somehow shoehorned the word "jurassic" in have succeeded...

The only connection I have with Dundee is sleeping in the train station after a Mission gig once, because our friends didn't book the B&B in time!

There was a bout of this on Twitter last night, my favourite being:

Gonna write some hip hop
Gonna write it in a chip shop

Another thing in SAW's favour, is that they were not the least bit pretentious, which for me, proved very refreshing looking back in retrospect, in view of how elitest and snobby Brit Pop could at times feel. I really would at times take one of SAW's better tracks over those groups who believe whatever they delivered, was to be considered precious, with great artistic value. So many of the indie type groups in the last twenty years have been kidding themselves, with their humourless recycling of what the likes of Lou Reed, The Beatles, Ray Davies, and David Bowie, had done so much better years previously.

Off to a good start with Go Wild In The Country, but that's mainly because it was a new performance. I'm not sure how Steve Jones got away with wearing that T-shirt, though. I bet Michael Hurrl didn't see it beforehand.

I'm guessing Fun Boy Three and Bananarama were due to perform in the studio and maybe one of the Bananas was taken ill, hence the awkward interview with Fun Boy Three before the video. I'm glad they showed that instead of repeating the studio performance again, though the video did look really cheap.

Great to see another performance of See You and a gold star for Simon for getting their name right!

One for the Mums/Grans next. I like the video for Yours better than Beguin The Beguine, though not the song. It did seem though that Julio was more interested in singing the love song to his reflection in the mirror than the woman in the white dress.

I'd forgotten, so was pleasantly surprised, that Haircut 100 did another performance of Love Plus One. It seems to have been around for ages. Not sure why Nick and another band member were wearing macks, though.

Controversial opion alert - I really don't get what all the fuss is about Party Fears Two. Its a decent tune, but I'm afraid the OTT vocal is more on the side of annoying to me than amusing. The way Billy Mckenzie pronounces ugly "ugerly" really sets my teeth on edge. I did like his Frank Spencer/Michelle from the resistance getup though.

As much as I quite like Classic, it really is time for Adrian Gurvitz to go into his attic. I know the song climbs higher, but I don't think we see it again.

Shame Tight Fit didn't turn up in the studio for some more jungle-related antics. At least we had the video to enjoy anyway.

Great cameo from Sid Snot, aka Kenny Everett, though he's a year too early to do Snot Rap! Shame Kenny didn't co-host the edition, though at least he managed to sneak in a cheeky remark about "Julio Igreasyarse". It would be great if they were repeating his show after the TOTP repeats.

Can't say I'm that familiar with Stars On Stevie compared to other Starsound Hits, but I think it more than did its job as an upbeat song to play-out with. The recording I have has extra footage of the audience seeming a bit bewildered and wondering what to do after the song has ended.”

I knew it was too good to be true. There's always one

Everybody should own a copy of Meet Danny Wilson, The Crossing (and Steeltown if you ask me) by Big Country and another fine Scots debut, Raintown by Deacon Blue. In each case those bands never bettered their first LPs which is quite often the case when you look back.

I see FairbrassWatch™ noted at least two appearances for our feather haired pre-steroid one.
Watching the Associates on last night the question did occur to me just why was Billy constantly glancing high up to his left. Was the gallery located there? Was he hoping for some sign of approval from Herr Hurll? I think we should know.

And while I do like Party Fears Two and Club Country I have to say, Billy McKenzie seems to be the only person I've ever come across who is able to 'chew the scenery' singing. It's an absurd thing to listen to. Almost as if he thinks pop stars are meant to verbally gurn.

Also had to laugh at the 'Top of the Pops Kiss of Death' from Simon Bates declaring that Associates would go on to become mega pop stars.

My guess is that he was looking at himself on the monitors, which were above the studio floor. It's something I first noticed Marc Bolan doing whilst performing with T Rex …

I've not caught up with last night's episode yet - was Fairbrass competing with his nemesis LMSO again?

I remember years ago, hearing my dad listening to that once in the next room & I couldn't believe he'd suddenly got into The Associates especially seeing he has no interest in pop music! Then I heard the Radio 4 announcer afterwards & all became clear!

ELO's 'Very Best of' finally reaches No.1 on the album chart today 11 years after it first charted. It made the most of a low sales period and helped along with an advertising campaign. It's ELO's first No.1 album since 1981.

Well Done Jeff Lynne.

And Drake finallly falls to No.5 in the singles chart failing to equal Bryan Adams 16 week run at No.1.

I'd add High Land, Hard Rain by Aztec Camera to that list of debut albums.

Of the songs featured on the latest show I love Party Fears Two by The Associates, and of the songs in the charts but not featured I love Run To The Hills by Iron Maiden; did IM ever appear on TOTP?

I could not name any Drake song & I could not recognise any of his work, I would not recognise a photo of him either - although yes I had heard of him before seeing his name mentioned in this thread.

On the subject of The Associates ''Party Fears Two'', and how we (almost) unamimously rate the track, i think it is interesting to hear how these cover versions of this song match up:

Divine Comedy
