It could be a generational thing, Ursula, as LittleGirlOf7 is a little younger than us, and we can remember the days when it was possible to have a little fun, without everything having to have an agenda, or a deeper significance. I can remember at least a decade earlier, Morecambe and Wise sketches, where they were sharing a double bed, and again there was no sexual agenda attached to it at all, outside the comedy value of sharing a bed, being convenient for laughs. I really miss the old days, when it was possible to have a little fun. Whether spontaneous or not, the Glorious 12th, makes a great point about the Top Of The Pops episode having to be tightly scripted because it was going out live. The banter between Kenny Everett and Simon Bates, was only done for comedic effect, and the kiss most definitely heightened the humour, Kenny was aiming for. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that is was perhaps thought up by Kenny, himself, because it definitely enhanced the moment.

The David Bowie/Mick Ronson moment may have been more contrived by David to make a point, or statement, but I'm not sure even then whether his appearance was anywhere near as significant as it has been made out to be in more recent times. There is a lot of revising of history in recent times, to reflect a more contemporary attitude. David liked to stir things up, for sure, but part of his agenda was about making a name for himself, in appearing different, and almost alien. The 'I'm gay" remark from the period, wasn't really true, and he regretted making that statement years later. Those that were struggling with their identity, genuinely, like Elton and Kenny, actually kept it quiet for the time being.

Apologies for that, I didn't know the name of the band member wearing the T-shirt but on the TOTP 82 blog someone named him as Steve Jones so I took that to be right. I stand corrected

I've a confession Ursula. I watched it twice on Thursday night, both the early and late showing and never even noticed that Simon had given Kenny a quick kiss at the end of the show.

I do have to say that having taken a further look on the catch up player it's no wonder I missed it. I must have blinked both times at the precise moment. That was absolutely nothing, even in '82, for anyone to even raise an eyebrow over. I'd be genuinely amazed if Barry Took on BBC's Points Of View even received a single letter about it. What people have fallen into the trap of doing is effectively colouring behaviour in 1982 with the brush of 2016. Why do we like re-writing recent history so much nowadays, rather than just taking things for how and what they were?

I found Vauxhall1964's post #2716 yesterday about attitudes in the 1980's absolutely excellent and spot on.

I have to agree. Billy McKenzie's vocals are undoubtedly distinctive but completely over the top and rather spoil the song, which is actually a quite pleasant little number. His TOTP performance is also a tad unprofessional - the miming is poor, he keeps looking up at the monitors and seemingly can't decide whether to mime or not to the caterwauling backing vocal on the outro.

That style of synth pop works far better with a less expressive vocal that doesn't detract from the melody - give me a Neil Tennant or a Barnard Sumner over a Billy McKenzie any day!

I'm another one who doesn't really get the level of love for Party Fears Two. The song itself is as you say pleasant, in a sort of Altered Images way. I'd rather have had someone like Martin Fry doing the vocal personally.

Definitely not Corinne Russell, I don't recognise her at all. She certainly was hogging the limelight, in fact she probably has more air time than Simon Bates. As well as standing next to Simon at the start she then muscles her way to the front during Bow Wow Wow. You can also see her prominently during Pluto, Haircut 100 and the end credits and if you look closely you can also spot her during Depeche Mode and The Associates.

I am going to have to avert my eyes from this forum whilst The Associates are in the 1982 charts - I cannot bear to look at any negative comments about the Great man or Great song itself!!

Due to the Olympics, this weeks TOTP episode will be the last one for a few weeks. After that there will be 31 or 32 (depending on whether the Yewtree 2 can be edited out of the Jocky Wilson episode) to get through - I think this can be done by Christmas at 2 per week, but The Sky At Night might have something to say about that.

Edit: It's actually the YewThree in the Jocky Wilson episode as Jonathan King is on screen as well. Apparently Kid does the intro and outro, but as the camera zooms away from him JS and JK are in full view...

It is great to have some insight into how these programmes were made, from one who was there. It is obvious the BBC ran a very tight ship from some of the quality of the programmes & presenters back then. However, I still wonder at some of the DJs getting away with regular minor slip ups - such as Simes & his weekly blunders. Plus - as for Sir Jimmy - well we all know he was a law unto himself!!
