I had been searching for the yewtreed 1982 episodes in my collection, and i just happened to view a couple of episodes, as i was going through them. I think in many ways the music of 1982 is definitely a real mix, and dare i say that includes elements of pop that does sound rather more disposable (excluding perhaps 1981's clutch of medleys), than in the years immediately prior, although generally the charts of 1982, are pretty solid. I suppose i did feel a little disappointed in acts like Adam Ant, and Madness, during this year, who's sound did become increasingly pure pop, after me finding their music at the outset, quite unique, and at times very individual. Madness' "House Of Fun" i didn't mind, even if there was a mellowing of their sound, but "Our House" and "Driving In My Car" found them losing pretty much all their early more abrasive edge, and their Top Of The Pops appearances with the house reconstruction, and the car, reinforced the feeling that their music was focusing more fully on pure entertainment. However, new groups like Yazoo arrive with tracks like "Only You", which i think fill the gap. The Associates, Simple Minds, and Japan offer some interesting new sounds too, that give the charts some extra diversity, and detract attention away from them appearing predominantly as glossy pop. The one song i'd forgotten about a little, searching through those UK Gold editions, was The Mobiles "Drowning In Berlin", which was a pleasant surprise, as it has been years since i had heard that song.
As there are only about 7 shows from 1982 I haven't got copies of, for me the main enjoyment is reading comments on this thread and the TOTP blog. Sadly the opportunity to replace original and UK Gold recordings with better quality versions is getting less and less as well as Yewtreed shows we've now got ones being cut because of Jonathan King. I shall have to go through and work out how many full versions of shows we'll actually be getting from 1982.

Drowning in Berlin sticks out a mile as the highlight of the 1st 1982 show. Both early and late versions are showing as 30 minutes. It looks like there's a Jonathan King segment so I guess that'll get binned.
Our House sounds quite individual to me. Surely smoother doesn't have to mean less individual. I would even argue that some of their early songs can sound generic, not all of them are that individual. They had a style and they certainly got all they could from it, whether the earlier material or later. I'd rather just pick what I like the most from both. I haven't really counted up which period I prefer, maybe the earlier but I wouldn't want to be without some of the later. The Sun and The Rain from 83 I also rather like.

'One Better Day' is a wonderful record and is one of my favourite Madness records. It's a more mature sounding song that sadly failed to become a massive hit though by this point the group's popularity was on the wane.
When I moved to London in 1985, on my first night down there I went to one of the local pubs close to where I was living, a pub called The George near the Royal Free Hospital in Belsize Park, NW3 and who should walk in but all of Madness! Belsize Park was just up the road from their regular haunts in Camden Town. Also a regular in the area was Jon Moss of Culture Club and he could often be found shopping in the local Budgens shop!

Regarding Madness - I really love all (or most) of their post 1982 hits. Their original fans say they went downhill after 'Our House' - but I disagree with this completely & think they had some great songs in the mid-late 80s. Even 'Johnny The Horse' which they released years later on, is a great song equal if not better than a lot of their 80s hits.
Madness compilations are one of the few 'best of' CDs that you can listen to throughout, without skipping a track.
Regarding London - the year I lived down there I never bumped into anyone famous unless I saw them live in concert or on a TV show as an audience member. In fact, the only times I ever bump into famous people are usually when I'm outside of London!

Well, the individuality aspect of my post was possibly more directed to Adam & The Ants (and the burundi drum sound), than Madness, although of course Madness were always very good at observational writing, and i think with ''Our House'' and 'The Rise And Fall' album, there became an increasingly more noticeable Ray Davies influence in their lyrics. Personally, i have never been too keen on the production team behind Madness, in Alan Winstanley and Clive Langer. The Madness hits from the first album sounded fine from a production standpoint, but thereafter i was never completely happy with their sound. Yes, ''Our House'', i'd say was definitely better than ''Driving In My Car''. Some of their post 1983 singles like ''Michael Caine'' and ''Yesterday's Men'', possessed a very different sound, and almost soulful in places, which i think made a nice change of direction, but for me, their pinnacle was possibly ''My Girl''.

It was licensed to Sire there and remixed there by François Kevorkian, who would go on to remix many tracks for Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode, and whose other 1982 credits included D Train's 'You're The One For Me'. The remix was never released commercially in the UK, but it crossed over to the clubs in the autumn of that year and was a big floor-filler at the time. Bizarrely, it was credited to 'Yaz' …
Yazoo re-recorded situation for a 12" remix of 'Nobody's Diary' the following year - although I'd say the original B-side to that track, 'State Farm' is nearly as good … and never got the same attention as 'Situation'.

I am enjoying these Zoo routines far more than Legs and co's. Controversial on here I know what with all you Sue worshippers
but there is a lot more variety! Amongst all the posers & glittery cheerleaders some of dancers were pretty impressive. Clive Clarke (who's contributions I love on these 'Story of...' compilations) was an amazing dancer & was always seen out n about on the London soul-boy club scene, as were Wesley, Radford & Pinky & Tony (despite their dubious routines with Kelly Marie & Hazel Dean) Agree about Dee Iva were great & I loved especially what they did in the Flash & the Pan routine. Robotics I always found fascinating! Wasn't the white Dee Iva dancer in a Frankie Goes To Hollywood video too? Relax I think! Shame JS presented these 2 eps as they are among my favourite totps of 1983

Drowning In Berlin was one of the few 1982 songs I hadn't heard until recently and I was really looking forward to hearing it for the first time a few weeks ago.
I have to admit that I was very slightly disappointed: although it was a good song, I was hoping it would be as interesting as something like I'm In Love With a German Filmstar by The Passions, and it wasn't quite at that level.

I suppose it partly depends on whereabouts in London you lived. I lived in Notting Hill Gate for several months in 1987 and the place was chocablock with famous and recognisable people. From politicians to actors and pop and rock stars I seemed to see loads of them on a regular basis. Most famous to me was Eric Clapton who I've mentioned before was stood next to me in a pub while we were both waiting to get served. My mate saw Freddie Mercury one day though sadly I never did. On the other hand I spent several years living in and around the Wembley area and never once saw anyone remotely famous unless you count a bit part actor (I can't even remember his name) from Crossroads!

Thanks for that Robbie. I just investigated this a bit. Seems you used to be able to change your username on here but can't anymore due to 'technical issues'. The only option now is to re-register and choose a new username but then you lose your posting history. Probably makes more sense for me to just stay 'as is'.

I heard that about Yazoo at some point also. As another example I think Suede had a similar problem at one point and their early releases over there were credited as 'The London Suede'.

The one thing i do notice in previewing some of these 1982 episodes, is how much more in the spirit of Legs & Co. several of the Zoo dance routines appear. Zoo weren't just predominantly about posing, and appearing flamboyant. I am not sure whether those more traditional routines were already part of Zoo's act from the start, or whether the opinion of the audience may have accounted for them being included. A lot, of course, also depends on the song.

Well, there seem to different explanations dependent on what exactly you google and what subsequent you read. From what I can tell the official line seems to be 'that it causes the site to crash',
not sure why though. It's a weird one. But anyway...Yep, The Beat also of course. And that got me thinking, who was the group who had to add 'UK' after their name in the States. And the one I was thinking of was The Charlatans!
which I blush about as during my record company days I worked with them in their early days, although in my defence that was about 25 years ago. Remembered that via another google search and coming across this http://cassavafilms.com/list-of-9/ni...he-us-audience it seems a lot more well known and successful groups from here had to at first also adapt their names for the US market than most of us probably realise.

I had that edition with Paul Weller and Tracie on the cover. I possibly still have it hiding away somewhere! I suppose it was not every day that the cameras were allowed in to film the Smash Hits magazine coming hot off the press. This was possibly the only footage available. That edition of Smash Hits is from around March 1983, if memory serves me correctly. It was around the time Paul Weller first unveiled The Style Council.
Those were exciting days!
