I also had that edition and it was exciting. I remember listening to the chart rundown with Peter Powell on his radio show on the Tuesday evening to hear what number Speak Like a Child had gone in the charts. I think it was number 6, then went to 4 before sliding.

D Train's You're The One For Me was one of the funkiest songs from the beginning of 1982. Unfortunately it only got to number 30 and I don't think it got a performance on TOTP.

Hang on a minute — I've just recognised that synth riff at 35 secs: it's the same as the one on Walking On Sunshine by Rockers Revenge which got to number 4 in the UK charts in September 1982! Never noticed that before.

Of course it was re-issued in I think 1985 when Paul Hardcastle was involved with the single and it did much better in the charts then.

When D-Train's 'You're the one for me' came out in late 81/early 82 the sound of it was so ahead of it's time and I don't think the UK record buying public outside of the Soul/club fraternity were quite ready for it. But boy what a funky record and a highly influential one at that spawning many copy-cat club records in the months to come namely the aforementioned 'Walking On Sunshine' and the excellent 'Beat the Street' by Sharon Redd. 1982 had some excellent Soul/Disco tracks some even made it into the TOTPs studio

Interesting. Just listening to my copy of the Radio One Top 40 from Sunday 21st February 1982 which features the track as a new entry at number 30. Tommy Vance says at the end of the track that "It's been at the top of the disco charts for quite a number of weeks now" and mentions that D Train is a 20 year old New Yorker from Brooklyn by the name of James Williams, and that if you're a disco fanatic the B-side, the instrumental version, is also "getting massive play in discotheques."

Only Tommy's seventh Top 40 show on Radio 1, but he was already giving lots of interesting information about the songs in the charts.

This post has made my day. I bought the 1990 remix of Situation/State Farm on tape from the bargain bin in Our Price on a whim and that remix of State Farm is amazing. Always cheers me up. I thought no one else had ever heard of it. It's very 90s!

Jedikiah, I enjoyed John Peel's deadpan delivery too. He often looked like a disapproving janitor who had been roped into supervising a school disco. One of my earliest TOTP memories is the video for Some Like It Hot by the Power Station being shown and John saying something on the lines of "What a load of sexist nonsense!"

Re Madness, for me their finest moment will always be Michael Caine. Lovely.

It's "Radio 1 DJs" as the presenters, which presumably includes both of them at some point.

But as we saw from the clip in Story of 82, Kid Jensen opens the show, so maybe it will be easier to snip them out if they only appear momentarily?

Yes, they're both included along with the entire Radio One roster of the time (according to Popscene). It all sounds very indulgent and an episode I'll have to aquire nearer the time.

Less appearances by DLT and Savile by now but still enough to bugger up Dexys and three of the four appearances by the Associates

The Associates seem to be the 1982 version of the Human League in 1981 as far as Yew-Tree is concerned.

The real pity being that 1982 is the only TOTP year for the Associates - at least the Human League will get plenty more goes at it

John Peel's deadpan delivery is definitely suited to Hurll's party atmosphere. It really wouldn't have worked so well in the Robin Nash era, that's for sure. When we come to choosing our favourite presenter at the end of the year, i'd say, Peel has to be there or thereabouts. With his disdain, i think he's pretty much behaving in a way that many of the more mature viewers can relate to, and especially those who had been watching Top Of The Pops for a number of years already. The new Top Of The Pops generation, i would imagine, wouldn't quite see it in the same way, not having experienced anything different. Those acts and latest fads are obviously for the youngsters to relate to. Obviously, those acts are attempting to appeal to the young generation, predominantly.

It will be interesting to see how 1982 compares to 1981, from the perspective of today. 82, in a sense, lacks some of the diversity, of 81, and is becoming a little more glossy. However, there are possibly more songs that left a strong impression on me, in 82, than 81.

Yes I think that is how 82 will feel compared to 81.

I certainly remember thinking Andy Bell's vocals were pretty reminiscent of Alison Moyet's despite the difference in sex. I definitely felt with Erasure, Vince Clarke was looking for a similar type of singer to Alison (or Alf, as she was better known in her Yazoo days).

Sending some more love for 'Michael Caine'. I like the slightly different sound. A very underrated Madness single I feel.

From 1982 I liked 'Cardiac Arrest'. I think I mentioned this earlier, it's a strange topic for a single and maybe a bit brave at the time.
I was never the biggest fan of 'Driving in my Car'. It's ok but they certainly had stronger singles. 1983's 'The Sun and the Rain' spring to mind.
