AFAIK it was first shown on a Peter Powell edition before being repeated on a Savile episode three weeks later.

Can anyone explain the meaning of "Stealing cake to eat the moon"

Didn't Stephen Fischer previously appear on TOTP in June 1976 as the shorter of the two front men in New Edition singing the new 'Seaside Special' theme tune Sunshine Saturday ?

Weren't the Jilted John and Althea and Donna songs from Top Tens one hit wonders programme

The date of this show was her 20th birthday (according to Wikipedia), 15th April 1982.

(Just got round to watching the show which is why I'm commenting now).

For me, Night Birds doesn't sound any good unless you turn it up really loud on a proper sound system or using earphones and then it sounds pretty amazing. But when it's playing in the background, (or on a TV repeat like tonight), it sounds a bit weak. So paradoxically it isn't much use as muzak or elevator music IMO which is the category it's usually put in.

Does anyone know where we can watch the Jonathan King segments? I usually find them quite interesting to watch.

Best of the 1982 shows so far, miles better than last week and pretty much all killer no filler...9.25/10

the fizz, dollar and bardo in one show, very good! I didn't remember bardo, but we'd kill to have a song and performance like that for the UK next year... Bucks Fizz just knew how to make fabulous pop songs, and another memorable number one.

Great to see Simple Minds there, one of their best songs and a dreadful attempt at miming...

I didn't get into them until at college, and followed on after the discovery of U2 (do we see them anytime soon?).

Again, best show since 1981 for me, and the promise of the England team to come (I'm sure some of them are on exercise bikes or treadmills)...

3 consecutive posts from SgtRock, myself and Scott said the same thing at 7.55pm as the new No1 began.

Yes Ursula, definitely a better episode this week, and the mix of songs appeared to compliment each other quite well. I am with you on Simple Minds. I enjoyed the feel of "Promised You A Miracle", and also it seems relatively uncluttered production wise, which i like, when compared with some of the other songs this week. The song may also be one of my favourites of theirs.

Spandau Ballet's "Instinction" always sounds to me like a confusing record. It seems to have everything thrown at it, but the kitchen sink, but to me, underneath it all, i'm unsure the song has a lot to offer. Spandau's previous few singles had struggled, and they seemed very desperate at this point on the evidence of this to not let their previous success slip. Trevor Horn was brought in to remix this track for single release, but it does, like Dollar, sound more like a mixing desk record, than a strong coherent song. Underneath it all Spandau were definitely beginning to mellow from likes of their 1981 style single releases. They were starting their gradual transition to their 1983 'True' period, soul/crooning style, although "Instinction" wasn't quite so mellow, and their pompous style of the early days, was still in evidence.

The Monsoon track, "Ever So Lonely", is one i remember well, from back in the day, not least because singer, Sheila Chandra, was making regular appearances as a student on Grange Hill. Good track too, and has a nice Eastern mood. According to Wikipedia , in recent years, Sheila has suffered from burning mouth syndrome, which has left her mute.

7/10 for this week's show.

I think it is hard to claim that the charts are very good on the one hand, but the songs selected for Top Of The Pops, are rubbish. I find 1982 much less consistent, but the right combination, like on this week's show actually has the potential to work well. I find it much easier to pick ten songs i love from 1982, than i do from 81, but that doesn't stop me thinking the general quality has diminished somewhat. I have a fair number of those 82 episodes in my collection, and sadly the presentation on Top Of The Pops goes from bad to worse, in the coming months, courtesy, of course, of Michael Hurll. Shame really, because some great tracks are very poorly represented. There is one for Oddysey's "Inside Out", with a featured Zoo routine which is truly excruciating. The sight of the woman opening and closing her legs to the sentiment of the song, seems rather tasteless.

Hard to discern that Roxy were even a band by this point though. Even when the other band members appear they are dimmed, with the spotlight on Bryan.

Yes -Jedikiah - I agree with your score & I agree about Simple Minds!

Regarding Kid's comment Rich - if only he'd left out the word ''consecutive'' he'd be right!

It's a really good example of the difference a producer can make to listen to the original version of Instinction on Spandau's Diamond album (not produced by Trevor Horn) and the single version (which was a remix by Trevor Horn). The difference is striking.

Never could get Shakatak's appeal. This is like the sort of library music that Radio 2 used to play early mornings.

Exactly, some people might find it harmless - but I find mistakes like that unprofessional & unacceptable; second consecutive no.1 & third no.1 in total. The BF performance was also from a previous episode so it was a lie of DKJ to say that all acts apart from Roxy Music were live.

I noticed that Dollar's Theresa wasn't wearing her engagement ring last night - had she & David split up in the romantic sense by this point?

Am I the only person to have noticed that there is a guy who is standing near the presenter every single week, he also dances but I'm pretty sure he's not a member of Zoo, he's just always there, I'm wondering who he is & why he's always there; not last night but in the previous episode he was wearing a baseball cap & red boots (last night he was wearing a dickie-bow tie). He looks a bit like the younger male character from 'Are You Being Served'.

Yes, i made that comment too, in a previous post. Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay had little more to do than any typically competent backing musician's job, by this period, and it was a far cry from their more challenging roles (and material) in early Roxy. "Dance Away" was probably my favourite of Bryan's smooth and sophisticated late period Roxy sounds. Thereafter, there became an element of repetition, although the 'Avalon' album as a whole seemed to work better than their previous album, 'Flesh + Blood'. There were no clunky covers on this record. There are some nice atmospheric soundscapes - hardly the hard hitting Roxy of old, but still effective in its own way.

No Jenny that is the famous Fairbrass that everybody has noticed and is a regular topic on this thread.

Nah!
Don't you (forget about me), Alive and kicking, Sanctify yourself and Oh Jungleland all from 1985 and all worthy of a listen, especially Oh Jungeland which was not even a single.
