Am I the only person to have noticed that there is a guy who is standing near the presenter every single week, he also dances but I'm pretty sure he's not a member of Zoo, he's just always there, I'm wondering who he is & why he's always there; not last night but in the previous episode he was wearing a baseball cap & red boots (last night he was wearing a dickie-bow tie). He looks a bit like the younger male character from 'Are You Being Served'.

Have no memory of this Bardo track at all. Must've gone to the kitchen to get a Wagon Wheel and a glass of Cresta while it was on.
Cremola foam for me , every time.

Craig Fairbrass, probably most famous for playing Dan Sullivan in EastEnders who was seeing Carol and Bianca Jackson at same time around 1999.

What a cracking episode. From Spandau Ballet, and the cracking 'stealing cake to eat the moon' lyrics, right through until the lovely Clare and Altered Images.
A fabulous number 1 and a cracking Eurovision song as well. One of the best episodes. Joyous. And with the England 1982 squad entering the charts, we must only be a few weeks away from one of the greatest world cup songs appearing. BA Robertson, John Gordon Sinclair and the Scotland World Cup squad. We have a Dream, but maybe I'm a wee bit biased! |

I recently decided to listen to the original version of Instinction by Spandau Ballet on the album Diamond, before Trevor Horn got his hands on it. IMO it sounds pretty awful by comparison to the Horn version, especially the drum solo in the middle. No wonder the band were pleased to have it re-mixed. Trevor Horn himself said he was disappointed that he couldn't get the band into the studio to re-record the vocals and instrumentals, but they weren't available, so he had to do everything using the original recordings.

This TOTP82 thread is becoming very anti-Shakatak.
Leave them alone, their music is good, obviously cannot be appreciated via the BBC4 TOTP broadcasts but their music sounds good from CD source.

I noticed that Dollar's Theresa wasn't wearing her engagement ring last night - had she & David split up in the romantic sense by this point?

Which has a line about David going off to join Bucks Fizz, talk about predicting the future! He didn't half cause some chaos there in the 90s!

A decent edition of the pops this week.
The pluses for me were Spandau Ballet, Simple Minds and Dollar. Humble pie confessions of the week : 2 songs I hated at the time have gained 3 promotions up to a 'well above average' rating. 'The Camera Never Lies' began to filter through to the good taste sector of my brain when I saw the video last week and not even Bobby and Mike's ridiculous outfits could detract from the song. And a second helping of humble pie comes via Monsoon's wonderful single 'Ever so lonely'. 34 years ago I just didn't get this single and like many on here had forgotten all about it until 1 hour ago. Not even Zoo's uninspiring wriggling could detract from what was a very enjoyable 3 minutes of aural pleasure. Loved Promised You A Miracle at the time and I still do. My favourite Simple Minds track from this era would undoubtedly be the underrated 'Someone Somewhere in Summertime'. The B-side of PYAM is also worth a listen 'Theme from great cities'. An impressive debut from yet another quality Scottish group and not even Jim Kerr's questionable miming could detract from the performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJDx-1L3V9U Shakatak have come under attack on here and are clear winners of this week's wooden spoon but I agree with Nic : Night birds is a fine track, easy listening, well produced and infinitely better than how I remember it three decades ago. Not even a lack of lyrics could detract from an enjoyable, stress reducing ,ivory tickling fest. Agree with Andy about the wonderful job done by Trevor on the original version of 'Instinction'. This is one of 3 songs going straight onto my pod from this week's edition. No idea why I omitted to include it in the first place. I'm obviously a slow learner. Long gone are the days when the first song on the pops was a throwaway piece of garbage which the DJ would predict as a future number one although the track was no doubt destined to stall at No.51 in the charts. Instinction heralded a good run of singles for the Spands in 1982 and not even questionable lyrics about cake and the moon and Hadley's redundant cloak draped loosely over his shoulders could detract from a wonderful opening to the music fest. Kid did his usual enthusiastic, professional presentation but drifted into Batescity Arizona twice : inappropriate use of the word 'consecutive' and claiming the No.16 slot for Monsoon when Bardo were in fact the highest entry at No.16. Not even these irregular faux pas could detract from a job well done by one of the best DJs at the time. Not so keen on either Roxy Music or Bardo but don't dislike either song so their inclusion did not detract from my overall enjoyment of this week's fine edition. 8/10. |

It's due in a large part to DVD and his actions that Cheryl, Mike and Jay can't use the Bucks Fizz name now. |

I've just caught up with Friday's edition of TOTP and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. At times Top Of The Pops from 1982 has disappointed but I thought this edition perfectly captured my memories of the charts of April 1982 - very poppy and colourful.
My favourite of the night was 'Ever So Lonely', I loved that record when it was in the charts though strangely I never got around to buying it. 'Promised You A Miracle' was a good one too though I remember being a bit surprised at the time by the change in direction by Simple Minds. They did admit in an interview at the time to owing the record company a lot of money and a change in direction was needed to bring more commercial success - it certainly worked! The number 1 - 'My Camera Never Lies' - is a wonderful record and is one that I bought at the time (along with Dollar, 'Give Me Back My Heart' is a wonderfully dreamy record). I quite liked the Shakatak record in a "it's a sort of naff but enjoyable record" sort of way. At this point the band seemed to be unsure of what direction to head in. When they first formed they were at the forefront of the jazz funk movement but by this point in 1982 their sound was beginning to become slightly watered down and more commercial. They still had some good singles to come yet though. I'm another fan of Sally Ann Triplett - she looked rather nice performing 'One Step Further'. She tweeted a few hours ago that her TOTP appearance coincided with her 20th birthday https://twitter.com/ann_triplett/sta...07679190204416 |

After Friday's show, and that Simple Minds performance, I revisited them today - some cracking songs in there i'd long since forgotten about...
Aside from the extremely well know Don't You Forget About Me (from The Breakfast Club) and Alive and Kicking (which was Sky's Premier League theme for years - that must've set the guys up for life!), it was great to hear 'Waterfront' and 'Once Upon A Time', right up there with their best stuff... and the cover of Sign o' The Times from the Amsterdam EP... for a time there, they were knocking out some really good records...great memories
