Thanks RR - like a bit of Dick myself. (Emery of course!!!)
Regarding the multiquote - I'm trying to beat the Gatherer's 14 posts in a row on the TOTP thread - but I never manage to do it.

I got close tonight : you and Footygirl brought my long run of posts to an end.

I'm sure there is plenty of good music that we both like. Just not 'Fame' .

Watch tonight's late edition - you'll see it then if you like it.
I get the impression you don't like it though .

You're The One For Me by D Train should have been a massive hit in my opinion, but instead it only reached number 30 in February. It wasn't shown on TOTP except appearing at the start of the Top 30 countdown with Mike Read on 18th February.

Incidentally Gary Kemp said in a 1984 interview (available on YouTube) that if Japan had released anything vaguely commercial during 1982 it probably would have gone to number one. Probably true seeing that the very un-commercial Ghosts got to number 5 as we saw a few weeks ago.

Jennifer Beals (of Flashdance fame) would have to win it for me, (even though she's about 15 years older than me and I wasn't thinking about the subject at the time. )

He she is doing an Australian interview in July 1983:

I was tempted to make a few comments a while back when seeing your original post but decided against doing so as mine would have been none too complementary. For me Irene Cara's theme song is a brilliant track, love it. The others you mention though... Ooh, not so much. I had an "each to our own" moment and thought, "fair enough if that's what you think". I thought Irene aside those other 'Fame' related songs were dire. Have to admit though, I watched the first series back in the day when it was broadcast and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Yes Ian it was that Big Brother chap asking Savile a question back in 2003 on that TOTP show with Dale Winton.

His name is Paul Wilder. You may find this recent Daily Mail article about him rather amusing;

I think we're beginning to bond Mr RR!! I fear it might be a somewhat tenuous link though so I suggest (particularly from a historical prospective) that we both proceed with caution.

Well that was 3 minutes 2 seconds of my life wasted. How blooming awful was that! I used to find Dick Emery very amusing, that's tainted the memories of him for me some what though. Just checked and nice to see that failed to make the top 40.

No - I doubt Rich is - but Scrumper could be - seeing this appears to be his only TOTP comment on the forum & it's a post in defence of Shakey too!!

Here is an interesting interview this week with Shirley....I mean Shaky;

"I'd rather not be confined to only performing past hits" - http://www.independent.co.uk/arts=en...-a7319046.html

Just after his 69th () birthday next March he will be doing a national UK tour all over the country. A family friend has tonight already expressed keen interest in going to see him on one of his dates next April 20th. I'd jump at the chance to catch him live. The tickets aren't too badly priced either.

Straker do you want to come with me? He's my ***** you know.

Shirley was a poor song really. It had a massive leap up the charts after Shaky's performance this week, going 22 to 6, but it plummeted like a stone immediately after that, the full chart run being 22 - 6 - 11 - 23 - 36 - 64. That's pretty awful. In 1982 to rise 22 to 6 and then go back 5 places out of the top ten would have been very unexpected and a bit of a chart shock. Although I do think the song did well to even hit No6 in truth.

It will be interesting to see how his new album charts. Could he get a first No1 album since 1981? It's been heavily promoted.

I was about to write the same too!! - Just didn't want to be first to stick my head above the parapet, incase there were some feisty Fame fans on here!!

Too late - I've already caught you! And no - I'm not being ironic - I think Nick is a great songwriter - just wait for some of his gems to appear in the next year or two!

His solo stuff was really credible and surprisingly mature only a year later in 1983. Whistle Down The Wind is a fabulous song and Take That Situation is a great summer 1983 memory. Both just missed top ten.

Seems like neither me nor Ursula can sleep tonight. My body clock is a wreck.

I was asleep earlier surprisingly - but for some reason my body alarm clock seems permanently set at 3am every other night/morning!!

'A Blue Hat For a Blue Day' is also a great & underrated song by Nick too! - Plus - I agree with your earlier comments - as he looks even younger here!!

Having stayed up to watch the Patriots v Texans, i just saw the late TOTP, and great to see (if not hear!) the 1982 England squad after all these years... There was quite a buzz around at the time (first time qualifying since 1970, setting a template for the modern day Scottish team)... some great players there before they got old and craggy... a squad with Keegan, Hoddle, Robson, in should've gone further really... not the greatest song though!

Back to the music... didn't like Ph D. that much, and the rest of the show was pretty average fare - nothing too terrible, but nothing much to shout about either (Ebony and Ivory probably the standout). Surprising to see how nervous Bananarama looked then, seemed as if it was the first time they'd seen a camera!

Didn't think too much of Kim Wilde - perhaps it's just the unfamiliarity with songs like this.

Shaky was dreadful - apparently he has a 33 date UK tour next year...! The last memorable song of his was Merry Christmas Everyone, and miles better than Shirley!

Looking back at these old episides now I must admit I find the success of Shaky in the early 80s completely baffling. I'm not knocking him but given the era his throwback rock n roll seemed so out of place however was hugely successful.
