His unexpected journey aside, Temperton was a total songwriting legend. It's rather sobering to think that the music industry is now dominated by teams of corporate 'composers', whereas he was able to deliver polished classic after polished classic on his own. He deserves all the credit he's getting.

I was going to console myself by looking forward to an episode of TOTP tonight - but that's not on either!! ..Grrrrrr

The bit in that interview that startled me was Temperton demanding the harp being used over the intro of 'Boogie Nights' and Blue going along with it … there are many producers who wouldn't even listen to what the songwriter/artist wants unless they've got mega-stardom status (which Temperton didn't in 1976/1977).

No TOTP tonight? I was looking forward to one, I need a Pops fix! So, have consoled myself by just watching the two I missed last week.

Thursday's

Hot Choc - Decent enough song but not really one of their best. Performance itself half ruined for me by the predictable OTT audience 'participation'.

Bardo - Still liking this one!

Joan Jett - JOAN JETT!!!!! Just wow. What a gal! Love, love, love her. Nice to see the video shown in full. I hadn't realised that happened as well as the forthcoming (and much anticipated in this house) studio appearance. Step aside Kim and you too Siouxsie, Joanie's the coolest lady of '82.

Yazoo - Their debut I presume. Great hair Vince. That's another style I adopted as my own at one point some years later. He's alright is Vince. I once served him during a short stint as a barman in the mid 80's and he tipped me £5!

Simple Minds - A new studio performance would have been nice, but never mind. Still a great song.

Nicole - I didn't previously remember this one but did as soon as she got to the chorus. Love it. Nice song. I might just add that one to the ipod.

Spandau Ballet - File under 'best heard, not seen'. Decent song but I just can't stand the group themselves. They have such a pompus 'look at us, aren't we brilliant' air about themselves. Quite. Vile. Of course they would go on to be massive but I remember reading an interview with Gary Kemp, from around I think about this time back in 1982 where he was asked if they thought they'd be as big as Soft Cell. He replied saying something like "bigger, much, much bigger. The way I see it a group like Soft Cell are like a little corner shop whereas we're more like a huge superstore". Smug git! Marc replied to this in a subsequent interview saying something like, "well, I'd rather be a corner shop selling unique, interesting and individual items as opposed to a superstore that just sells you mass produced bland rubbish, so, I'm fine with that!". Nice one Marc.

Monsoon - Great song, so infectious. Good performance too and particularly nice to see the audience were kept under control and respectful for once.

Paul/Stevie - Skipped.

Rocky Sharpe (?) possibly, I missed his name - Anyway - SKIPPED!!!

Pretty good edition that one only really let down by the last two songs for me. 8/10 and 3 of those points are for Joanie!!!

Junior - Skipped!

Depeche Mode - I believe they're all on good terms again now, which is nice but I think there was a lot of animosity between Vince and the other group members when he left. Which made me wonder if DM and Yazzo (or any of Vince's subsequent groups and/or collaborations) ever appeared on the same TOTP edition? I don't recall it ever happening. But, could be wrong.

Footie song - Skipped!!,

Ph.D (which I think is how your write it?) - All looking very 1977 to my eyes. They look like members of Smokie! Sad he's no longer with us. Good vocalist, I like a unique sounding voice. And a good song, another one I might have to add to my collection I think.

Tight Fit - Bargain bin ABBA B-side sound-a-like it might well be, but great tune. I love a bit of catchy pop! Quite a lacklustre looking performance though I thought.

Spurs - Skipped!!

Patrice Rushen - Mmm, ok, not normally my kind of thing this but, nice. Enjoyed it, classy sounding song. Audience predictably half ruined that one for me though with some of them seemingly under the impression that it was all about them! Idiots.

Scotland - Skipped!

Joan Jett - It's Joanie again!!!! So very cool.

Paul/Stevie - Skipped!

Banana's/FB3 - Like it.

Not as good as Thursday's but not awful. 6/10 and this time 2 of those points are just for Joanie. Score would undoubtedly been lower if I'd actually had to sit through those football songs though.

The intro to 'Boogie Nights' is one of the best bits!

There it is again. Exactly what I was saying before. This thing about deferring away from DLT by saying others have done the same or worse. It's not a defence and it only serves to be dismissive towards the women that had to put up with DLT's groping.

If you reread my comments - I didn't say "put up and shut up" - but that the offender should be "reprimanded" in some way. - Is running to the police & getting a bit of publicity a really effective way of dealing with such things? No I think not.
Would it not be better to deal with it at the time by perhaps addressing it loudly & showing him up there & then - if it happened in public? (which I think was the case here). Obviously if it happens in private - then that's when you can go running to the police.

Good morning/afternoon - but I don't get the "Bingo" references.

You were suggesting that women should not seek assistance from the police. The whole point is that anyone should feel able to approach the police over any matter. Suggesting, 'Oh don't bother the police with such things,' is exactly what has allowed so many incidents in the past to manifest themselves into something more serious later.

Not everyone is seeking publicity. DLT should've simply kept his hands to himself.

I had an accidental overdose in the very early hours of Sunday morning which made me go a bit weird. It's taken me all week to recover. I do feel that this TOTP 1982 thread has similar qualities to hard addictive drugs in that I need a regular fix and going cold turkey is very hard work.

What bothers me regarding the whole DLT case (trial and appeal) is why after hearing the section referred to in the link provided in G12's post, a jury would come to their original conclusion of 'Guilty'.

Bear in mind in a court of law as a defendant, plaintiff or witness, it's sworn under oath to tell 'the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth' so my question would be, was this podcast evidence used in the case for the defence during the trial? If anything, listening to the podcast at the relevant point there certainly would seem to be 'Reasonable Doubt' for a jury to return a 'Not Guilty' verdict.

One can only conclude that this vital piece of evidence (the podcast extract) was not made available to the court during the trial on this count, but became available following the conviction. Therefore it would seem DLT appealed the conviction using the podcast segment as 'new evidence' in an attempt to overturn the conviction and prove reasonable doubt (see link below).

If so, the pertinent quote in the text would be:

'His (DLT's) QC Stephen Vullo told the court:
“We have evidence now that (the complainant) lied to the jury.”

For whatever reason, the appeal was dismissed and a further question I'd have in these circumstances would be....in the light of this vital evidence, why?

I wish I hadn't made the mistake of scanning the last few pages of this awful thread.

It reads like a bunch of old duffers in a "Gentleman's Club" reminiscing about the old days when they could call a Spade a Wog, pat the waitress on the bum and she should be grateful for it.

And the awful self-congratulatory mutual appreciation posts are nauseating.

Thank God (with very few exceptions) I don't know any of you in real life, you're appalling.
