'Tainted Love' seemed to hang around the lower reaches of the charts for a long time, with it going back into the top 75 for a while, but it also was in the larger Top 200 for close to 5 years. Until 'Blue Monday' by New Order it held the record for the single with most weeks inside the top 200. The Boomtown Rats single was their first to not make the top 50 / top 75. By now they were a group in decline.

Same here, and hearing it now I much prefer it to the more ubiquitous "Annie...".

Another one that I clearly remember now reminded of it, but probably haven't heard since 1982! Didn't realise that this one came in between "Wonderful Thing" and "Annie".

Kid Creole & The Coconuts were very much a 1982 thing - their golden run of hits amounted to three singles and five months, after which they barely ever cracked the top 30 again.

Unfortunately Kid Creole was unable to maintain the high standards of Tropical Gangsters and as you say Sgt, the hits dried up completely.

I did buy 2 singles by Coati Mundi and the Coconuts 1 year later which I liked and I bought the Greatest hits of Kid Creole. 'Table manners' is worth a listen. There are 3 or 4 hidden gems on the Greatest hits compilation but the GBP lost interest in the group beyond 1982. Pity.

If they're not then I'm not sure why he'd tell me that and if they are one and the same I'm not sure why Boz would talk about The Gatherer as if he was a separate person, like he was last night, 'cos that's a bit weird either way.

It's kind of odd that Kid Creole & The Coconuts were height of hip in 1981, broke through massively in 1982, then suddenly crashed and burned after that. It was as if the hip press like The Face and i-D wouldn't go near them after their commercial success, and they were viewed as little more than a novelty act by the mainstream.

I'd agree that they deserved more - as did this other creation of August Darnell, a minor hit a couple of years after Kid Creole had fallen out of the frame …

I was dragged to see them by my then girlfriend in about 1974 and I can promise you Ursula, they were dreadful. I was probably one of about 5 blokes in the entire audience and there was an avalanche of knickers being thrown by screaming teenage girl, some of which ended up on my head. .

I'm sure some men would be glad to be stuck in an audience of females, having knickers thrown at their heads!!

Thoughts perhaps best kept to myself , but....I can't help wondering if these girls would take an extra pair, (or more maybe), especially to throw or did they throw the one's they were wearing in a spur of the moment decision? And if they (preferably) took an extra pair specifically for the purpose, what would they take? Surely not their best, but surely not a cheap, nasty looking pair either. Anyway, I'll get back to my work.

To be honest, I've always wondered why girls (& maybe some boys) throw items of underwear at their idols? Do they think their idols will suddenly see them, fall madly in love with them & rush off stage into their arms?!! To be honest, I can't think of anything more annoying if I was up on stage - except for spitting or being bottled off of course.

I must admit - I am pleased to say that in all the years I have been to gigs/concerts I have never had the urge to throw any of my attire up onto the stage as yet!!

Re your ice breaker, my first TOTP memory? Hmm tough one, with all the re-runs and stuff you start getting false memories. Definitely remember Legs & Co very well, particularly Sue. I distinctly remember the video from You're The One That I Want being on constantly as that one stayed at the top for weeks, so that would have been when I was 7 or 8. First single was Buzzcocks Ever Fallen In Love, which I am quite proud of considering it could so easily have been something terribly embarrassing like I've Got A Brand New Combine Harvester which Dad bought for us

Have been avoiding your Top 75 Countdowns in anticipation of not knowing which song is where in the charts, so I read them after the episode; so much fascinating stuff in the lower reaches of the chart like you say, a lot of American stuff seems to get stuck outside the 40, even great songs like Our Lips Are Sealed by The Go Gos. Guess we used to 'buy British' more back then.
