After a poor start to the show, it ended on a high.

Dollar's song wasn't too bad... but not enough to save the episode from being fairly awful . A straight 4/10 from me.

With the inclusion of Paul McCartney and Yazoo I think this will be an 8/10 for me.

Don't Go by Yazoo will improve the episode a bit on the late edition.

'Love Me Do' - The Beatles (1962), 'House Of The Rising Sun' - The Animals (1964) and 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' - Jeff Beck (1967) also re-enter the chart later in 1982.

David Essex i remember had a saturday night variety show which featured up and coming bands.
Mari Wilson was on singing Just what i always wanted and
Toto Coelo I eat cannibals.
David sang Me and My Girl as the theme tune, thats the only reason it got in the charts i think. Though it is good in stereo

At Leo Sayer always sang live. Written by the Bee Gees . I liked it

For those of us who are now enjoying a happy nostalgic Fame fest,
there is a Fame reunion documentary on youtube from 2003 which obviously reunites the main stars, including Gene Anthony Ray (Leroy) who had a stroke at the very young age of 41 the month after this was made, and sadly died about 6 months later.

Yep, it feels a bit like we're waiting for the Next Big Thing in pop music, which is probably going to be Boy George and Culture Club in about 9 weeks time. No need to worry though, we've got the likes of Saddle Up by David Christie to look forward to before that.

I didn't realise that they were making Fame series for 5 years from 82-87. I must admit to watching it regularly for the first couple of series, when they had all their hits in the charts, (loved Starmaker) but the novelty wore off after that. I imagine the ratings went down quite a lot by the end.
The David Essex and Cliff tracks were very familiar to me at the time, so they must have had very regular airplay on the radio and TV. I quite like them.

This Yazoo song was belting out loudly across my town Co-op on Monday evening when I popped in, which couldn't help but make me smile knowing it was about to come along on TOTP.

Another high mark for this edition coming later when I see Yazoo with Paul McCartney in the unedited showing.

I think the main problem was that Sky nicked it from the Beeb, (or the Beeb stopped showing it).

But TBH the last few seasons were a bit weak. They felt like the originality had leaked from them and too many wannbes took over.

True. As massive a fan as I was, I don't remember watching it much after the first two seasons.

I got some poor quality tv rips off youtube of the last 3 seasons, and they are a chore to view.

Janet Jackson was in some episodes but even someone as famous as her couldn't save it.

And the Bubbling Under 25s. Some were by acts we thankfully never heard of again (hello Rocky Sharpe!), some which were on their way to the top 75 and which would reach the top and some which would eventually have a chart hit and would reach the top in a year or two...

For Wham it would take a re-release to chart. The version here is the original, with the "DHSS" lyric which was changed for the remix / remake. As a former worker for the old DHSS I much preferred this version rather than the remake which removed much of the meaning about having "soul on the dole" by removing the reference to the DHSS which I thought made this original quite enjoyable - and which made the likes of Paul Weller appreciate their earlier music. Plus, of course Mr Weller was about to embark on a relationship with, and father a child to, the rather gorgeous backing singer, Dee C Lee.

I'm the same. I don't recall watching it beyond 1983.

I just looked through the bubbling under's here and immediately thought "TODAY!" must immediately get that great track onto my collection and then went and discovered it was already there and has been for the past five years.

I part company with Highlander Ian (wey hey!) and will say that Wham Rap is surely their very worst single release.

I cannot believe that Gidea Park were still attempting yet more medley crap with a Beach Boys follow up almost a year after the first awful one. At least it flopped.

Blondie's final original hit single, a very minor one indeed at No39, barring remixes, until their comeback No1 single early in 1999 with Maria. I don't think I even know what War Child sounds like. Their 1982 rapid decline seems awful.

Yes he was in the earlier episodes. He played a character that was learning disabled.
There was also a blind teacher who was good.

Only the first 4 seasons were shown by the Beeb.

I loved the fact that B1 was the claim form for benefit and B2 was the form we (the DHSS) sent to the Unemployment Benefit Office to pay benefit. It's a subtle play on being on the dole that probably most people didn't get..!

Great album title. Will have to give that one a listen, one of those bands who's name you hear from time to time but never get round to checking out.
