I actually liked many of the Bad Manners hits, prior to ''My Girl Lollipop'', so i wouldn't agree with you there. However, ''My Girl Lollipop'', was possibly the most disappointing song of the night. Potentially the group could really have tapped into the ska rhythm of those previous versions and made the song memorable for a new generation, but the song barely had rhythm at all, just a very processed sound.
A pretty uninspiring episode all round, with many songs from the previous weeks i didn't especially like the first time, even though this time round some of the performances may have been different. Madness' ''Driving In My Car'' doesn't impress me any more, having their "Maddiemobile" brought into the studio - another side to the Hurll years i don't particularly like. A lot of visual glamour, of a sort, but still very little musical substance, which i think is what is the most important. The glamour doesn't quite disguise the mediocrity for me.
Junior's ''Too Late'' may seem vastly inferior to ''Mama Used To Say'' overall, but it does have a way of growing on me. It works in reverse to ''Mama Used To Say'', who's attributes pretty much hits you immediately, and then the song starts to become more and more tedious on successive listens. ''Too Late'' has more to offer than initially meets the eye (or ear!), but it still strikes me as a very poor single release.
Donna Summer's ''Love Is In Control'' is ok, and possibly more interesting than some of the tracks on the show, as it hasn't suffered from over exposure. However, it isn't amongst Donna's best work, in my opinion, or even particularly memorable. Not sure i like the Zoo routine to it either. I presume someone must have decided the track wasn't sufficiently interesting, just being accompanied by the video - hence the inclusion of Zoo.
Kid Creole's ''Stool Pigeon'' is an interesting track too, and he creates a rather individual sound, which is very distinctive. I'm not too sure i would choose to listen to it too frequently, though. and i was getting bored even half way through this Top Of The Pops performance. For me, ''I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby'' was much better.
The Stranglers ''Strange Little Girl'' seemed to be the first, and possibly only song which seemed to invest in any real emotional depth, and this is the eighth track into the show! Not that pop can't be frivolous, of course, but the balance has certainly shifted in the last year or two of watching these repeats. I don't think for a second ''Strange Little Girl'' is up with the group's earlier punk inspired sound, but it does work well for them.
Dexys Midnight Runners ''Come On Eileen'' works well, and back in the day, i found it extremely infectious, but for me it is one of those songs that can wear a little thin and irritating after repeated listens, which is something i could never say for ''Geno''. Survivor's ''Eye Of The Tiger'' made for an effective closing track, although i'm not a great fan of the song.
Overall, another rather mediocre episode. In a sense i actually found this episode rather grim, and sobering, and especially viewing the unedited version featuring The Brat's ''Chalk Dust''. The charts really weren't in a very healthy state in this period of 1982. The good news is i think tonight's episode looks rather more interesting.
